1 Diploma in Drugs Counselling Theory & Intervention Skills (NFQ Level 7) 2013/2014 (Year 2 Dublin) This professional training course offered by Merchants Quay Ireland in conjunction with University College Dublin is an opportunity for individuals working with drug users to gain intensive training in this interesting and complex field. The course runs over two academic years and includes classroom teaching and placements in specialist drugs services. To be eligible for Year 2 participants must have completed Year 1 (the MQI/UCD Certificate in Drugs Counselling Theory & Intervention Skills) or an equivalent course. An equivalent course must be recognised on the NFQ framework at a level 7 and modules/assignment completed must correspond to those completed in the MQI/UCD Year 1 course. This course offers a progression pathway into a degree programme, B.Soc Science with UCD. Course Objective To provide students with a range of skills and interventions to engage effectively with clients presenting with addiction issues. To develop students individual counselling intervention skills in beginning, sustaining, and maintaining a helping relationship. To give students a group work perspective in working with addiction/dependency from both a theoretical and experiential framework. To examine the areas of social and drug policy with a view to teasing out the wider macro issues in relation to problem drug and alcohol use. To offer students a one month placement in a drug/alcohol agency in order to observe and engage in supervised work and to provide students with an opportunity to link theory to practice. To examine the interface between problem drug use and mental health and to explore the role of dual diagnosis in addiction/dependency Learning Outcomes An understanding of the theoretical, practical, and clinical issues involved in addiction/dependency and the ability to respond appropriately. The ability to work from a reflective practice involving the capacity to develop discrepancy, and to manage resistance/ambivalence in a one-toone setting. To understand group work as a medium for change and to be able to think about groups both from a theoretical and experiential standpoint within an addiction treatment context. To understand and appreciate the wider social implications and consequences of problem drug/alcohol use and to examine and critique interventions at a policy level. To practice both individual and group interventions in a supervised setting and to be able to reflect on personal and professional development and critically evaluate service provision and delivery. To have an understanding of mental health presentations within the addiction field and the capacity to effect appropriate referrals

2 Semester One Addiction Counseling Theory This module will commence with an overview of culture in terms of modernity and post-modernity and will situate the phenomenon of addiction within these perspectives. The module will go on to introduce students to a range of counseling approaches from humanistic to behavioral, through to psychodynamic approaches. It explores the key components of each methodology both in themselves and from an addiction perspective. The link between addiction and the talking therapies will be explored alongside an examination of unconscious and behavioral aspects particularly with regards to the relationship to pleasure and enjoyment. The phenomenon of compulsive gambling will be focused upon both in terms of theoretical perspectives and intervention approaches. The module will also provide an overview of some of the ethical and supervision issues involved in addiction counseling. Have an understanding of the relationship between addiction and counseling (talking therapies). Have an appreciation of the principle components underpinning each approach and an ability to situate them within an addiction context. Have an appreciation of psychodynamic perspectives and be able to distinguish between symptom and structure Have an ability to distinguish between process addiction (gambling) and addiction to toxic media and be able to situate interventions and responses appropriately. Have an understanding of some of the ethical issues involved in addiction counseling, e.g. boundaries, confidentiality, keeping case notes, values, disclosure, referrals. Addiction Counseling Practice (Part 2) Motivational Interviewing/Brief Solution Focused Therapy This module will develop in students an integrated set of strategies for increasing competence in motivational counseling skills. Emphasis will focus on developing proficiency in the areas of reflective listening, highlighting discrepancy, increasing client self efficacy, and implementing change plans and strategies. This approach will be further underpinned by Brief Solution Focused perspectives within a drug and alcohol context. It is envisaged that students will develop competencies in the area of change talk, solution orientations, exceptions, miracle questions, and readiness to change scales. At the end of the module students will. Be able to demonstrate competence in the acquisition of M.I. skills. Be able to begin, maintain, and conclude an M.I. intervention and reflect on areas of strength and deficits. Be able to have their practice reviewed by peers. Be able to give constructive feedback to peers. Be familiar with brief solution approaches/interventions and their application.

3 Group Work (Theory/Experiential) This module is designed to give students both an understanding of the dynamics of group functioning and an opportunity to experience themselves as part of a group. The group work component will comprise two perspectives, a theory aspect and an experiential focus. Issues that will be explored will include process and task aspects of group work, creating a group culture, helping factors that make for a good group experience, dealing with hostility and conflict in groups, transference and transparency in groups, dealing with problem clients. Have an understanding of the therapeutic efficacy of group work as a helping medium and an appreciation of its potential. Have reflected upon their own interpersonal style within a group setting and gained an appreciation of learning from a group experience. Understand the importance of time spent creating a group culture and the implicit and explicit norms that shape a helping group milieu. Gain an appreciation of the helping factors that make for a good group experience. Have an understanding of the dynamics of conflict and hostility in groups and ways of dealing with this. Acquired knowledge and understanding of the ways in which the issues of transference/counter transference come to the fore in groups and how they are processed Semester Two Social Policy/Drugs Policy 2 The module provides an overview of the key sectors of the Irish Welfare State. It covers the core issues of poverty, power, and social exclusion. The module will examine the influence of social exclusion on how social problems occur and policy is shaped. The role of the statutory and voluntary sectors will be analyzed in relation to the shaping of policies in general and drug/alcohol policies in particular. The module also explores the development of Irish drug and alcohol policy, and examines the role of community development and interagency approaches in meeting needs. Have gained knowledge on how social policy is shaped and developed. Have an understanding of the structures that underpin issues of power and social disadvantage and an ability to reflect on their implications. Be able to analyze how social provision/ policies affect drug problems and reflect on the reciprocal nature of the interface between both. Gained a greater understanding of how the key sectors of the Irish State function in terms of policy formulation and service delivery. Have developed the ability to critically evaluate and analyze the impact of social policy, including, alcohol/drugs policy on service provision.

4 Practice Placement 2 This module offers students an opportunity to gain experience of and exposure to divergent drug/alcohol treatment models and to reflect on their application through a one month placement. Students will also be given the chance to practice their one-to-one Motivational Interviewing skills and to participate in the day to day workings of an alcohol/drug agency. The placement gives the student the opportunity to link theory and practice, and to critically reflect on the service provision/delivery and the treatment modalities that underpin them. The opportunity will also be available to develop personal/professional competencies and to use supervision effectively. Be able to link theory to practice. Be able to analyze the link between policy and practice and critically evaluate their effectiveness. Have developed a greater understanding of the various treatment philosophies/models associated with problem drug/alcohol use and be able to reflect on their efficacy. Developed the capacity to understand the social, philosophical, and therapeutic aspects of problem drug/alcohol use and demonstrate an ability to suggest appropriate interventions Be able to demonstrate Motivational Interviewing and Brief Solution skills. Problem Drug Use and Mental Health This module will explore the interface between problem drug/alcohol use and mental health. It will provide students with a conceptual framework for understanding some of the underlying issues/concerns that clients may present in terms of mental health. Areas examined here will include presentations such as schizophrenia, bipolar, co morbidity, anxiety disorders, and depression. Treatment issues regarding medication compliance and psychosocial concerns will be discussed and explored alongside the impact of legal and non-legal substances on medicated clients. The module will also examine the nature of trauma and sexual abuse situating it within a theoretical /conceptual framework, for example, the nature of disclosure, what to do and what not to do. The module will also look at the area of suicide and present an overview of helping strategies to equip students with the knowledge and skills to deal with this type of presentation. Finally, process addictions i.e. eating/food disorders will also be examined particularly in relation to how they both interface with and differentiate from chemical and substance dependence issues. An understanding of Dual Diagnosis and the implications for treatment. An overview of mental health services both voluntary and statutory in terms of service provision, delivery and referrals. A conceptual framework for understanding biochemical/psychological perspectives regarding psychoses, bipolar disorder, co morbidity, depression, and anxiety disorders. An understanding of treatment strategies/interventions in relation to medication compliance, psychosocial concerns, e.g. family, housing, day care, etc.. An understanding of the signs/symptoms re suicidal ideation and knowledge of treatment interventions.

5 An understanding of the issues involved in trauma and sexual abuse presentations, the interface with problem drug/alcohol use, and the ability to respond appropriately. An appreciation of how chemical and drug dependency interact with other kinds of symptoms (food/eating disorders) and how the object drug functions in the psychological economy of the subject. Who is the course for? The course is for anyone who has completed a certificate level training in the area of problem drug use/alcohol or equivalent and who are working either in the field or in a related field, and whose work brings them into contact either directly or indirectly with problem drug and alcohol users. Eligibility Those who have successfully completed the Certificate level in Drugs Counselling Theory & Intervention Skills or any equivalent course Teaching Methodologies The course is designed in such a way as to facilitate learners to achieve learning outcomes maintain a learner centred ethos provide opportunities for action and reflection in a balanced way encourage critical reflection. This requires the use of a range of teaching methodologies including: lecturing small group work use of role-play including video-taped role-plays case studies practical placement experience group discussions practical exercises essays Collective learning is both valued and built into the course and learners have planned opportunities to present work.study skills are provided to all students and there is a tutor support system in place.
