1 Georgia Career Academies Project Quarterly Report (This report reflects April- June activity) June, 2014 Houston County Career Academy 1311 Corder Road Warner Robins, GA Mission and Goals The mission of The Houston County Career Academy is to ensure a viable 21 st century workforce for Houston County. Our Goals: Help Houston County high schools to exceed the majority of USE benchmarks in Perkins accountability measures in years 1-5 of the charter. Help Houston County high schools increase the number of students graduating annually who meet the requirements of the new State Graduation Rule. From the school year, the Charter School will meet or exceed the Graduation Rate Trajectories identified by the state, beginning with 80% in 2011 and increasing 5% per year to 100% by From 2015 forward, the Charter School will maintain 100% graduation rate for the remainder of its term. Additionally, data-driven performance-based goals for the Charter School will be incorporated in the Houston County School System Balanced Scorecard. Increase the percentage of Houston County students earning post-secondary credit in career and technical programs by 2.5% per year during the term of this Agreement. Increase the number of Houston County students in work-based learning programs by 2.5% per year during the term of this Agreement. Increase the number of Houston County students attending Houston County Career Academy earning the GA BEST (business ethics student training) Certificate by 2% per year during the terms of this agreement. Partnerships Dr. Joe Richardson, Mercer Engineering Research Center, met with principal Sabrina Phelps and WBL teacher Cindi Holly to discuss possible job shadowing opportunities. Houston County Board of Education agreed to sponsor youth apprenticeship placements at the five local high schools for 5 students in the Teaching as a Profession pathway. Mr. Craig Hoffman, Technical Manager with Frito Lay meet with principal Sabrina Phelps, Dr. Wall, CTAE director, Dr. Jimmie Fouts, engineering instructor, Paul Hibbitts, HCCA BOD Chair, Cindi Holly, WBL instructor, and Kristine Thornburg, YAP Coordinator and WBL coordinator to lay foundation for maintenance mechanic job opportunity. Robins Air Force Base and Warner Robins Middle School provided job shadowing placements. Budget No changes Governance & Leadership The current Board of Directors includes: 2 business reps.. Cheronie Blunt and criminal justice students field trip to Houston County State Court Career Day Presentations Mossy Creek Middle, Northside Middle, Feagin Mill Middle, and Huntington Middle School Student Support Student Support at the Career Academy is provided by a counselor funded by Houston County Board of Education as well as a dual enrollment high school initiative coordinator funded by Central Georgia Technical College. A special needs teacher is also housed part-time at HCCA to assist any special needs students. Plans for student support include the following initiatives: Tier 2- Response to Intervention- parent conferences held in an effort to build relationships as well as track students that are at risk of graduating. Mercer Educational Consortium Mercer Educational Consortium- Small group meetings are held to assist students with BRIDGE Bill requirements including career and college planning. Sessions held in the following areas: resume writing, dress for success, and mock interviews. CAB program: Caring Adult in the Building- each fulltime student is grouped with a faculty advisor to assist with goal setting and career planning. Intervention Plan implemented for two groups of at risk students (high risk for dropping out). This effort is spearheaded by the counselor and school s social worker. Attendance Intervention meeting Panel discussion with counselor, teachers, social worker, principal, and school nurse concerning Tier 2 intervention for students with attendance issues. Georgia High School Graduation Test review Intense review sessions facilitated by Terri McCoy, math instructor, to prepare students needing 1 or more areas for high school graduation requirements.

4 Standards & Curriculum Teachers will continue to use Georgia Performance Standards; science, social studies and career tech teachers will infuse literacy standards in their curriculum. 5 School/Community Projects CPR / AED class in healthcare science lab Culinary Arts, Criminal Justice, and Teaching as a Profession students received CPR training HCCA health fair sponsored by healthcare science students Cosmetology nail care and advanced techniques live student work Evaluation In compliance with the guidelines set forth by the Houston County School System, teachers will be evaluated using the Georgia Teacher Evaluation Program. Ten percent of the staff piloted the Teacher Key Effectiveness System. In addition to using a work ethics rubric adopted by Central Georgia Technical College, the Career Academy implemented GA BEST. All students attending the Career Academy completed a career portfolio. The portfolio included modules covered in GA BEST. The portfolio was a part of the fulltime students exit interview. The program was initiated by Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler in January With business and industry input, the GDOL put together 10 standards as part of the GeorgiaBEST Program. Discipline and character, attendance and punctuality, work habits, teamwork, time management, attitude, communication skills, responsibility and organization are among the standards stressed as part of the program. Participating students earn one, two or three points per standard, depending on how well and consistently they exhibit the skill. To receive a certificate, participants must earn 25 out of a possible 30 points, including one in each category, plus achieve a specific grade point average (GPA). A GeorgiaBEST certificate from the GDOL enhances their college and job applications. 6 The current part-time enrollment by grade level at HCCA includes: 9 th grade th grade th grade th grade..129 TOTAL 396 Total students attending the Career Academy Enrollment & Student Focus Admission Requirements/Process to HCCA for Part-time Students The student must: Be in grades (Juniors will be given preference for enrollment with exception granted to seniors who have room in their schedule to complete the two semesters of A+ Certification in Computer Repair. Sophomores and freshmen may enroll with preference given to sophomores.) Commit to a pathway offered at the career academy. Contact base school counselor for approval to register for a course offered at HCCA. NOTES: (1) A lottery system will be implemented when requests for class exceed seats available.
