2 CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION Academy for Information Technology (AIT): Students work towards a Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) Certification. Students learn about computer systems and how to install, configure and troubleshoot networks. Automotive Technologies: Utilizing state-of-the-art professional tools and computer systems, students learn automotive repair and maintenance skills. The program is Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). This means the program meets or exceeds industry-recognized, uniform standards of excellence. Aviation: (CGEC Only) This high school flight training program prepares students for the FAA flight test for a private license. Possible career opportunities include commercial pilot, air traffic controller, FAA administrator or airframe and power plant mechanic. Aviation Maintenance Technology: (REC Only) An exciting program, Aviation Maintenance Technology provides students with a foundation of knowledge and hands-on experience in aviation production, maintenance and repair. Subjects covered include aviation mechanics, airframe and powerplant. As part of the course, students receive some basic flight training. Construction Technologies: Certified by the National Home Builders Institute, students learn construction, renovation skills and explore new green building technologies. They can also earn an OSHA 10 Hour Safety Certificate. Students receive extensive training in home energy efficiency and have the opportunity to receive a Home Energy Analyst & Technician (HEAT) Certificate. This program also has work-based learning including opportunities with Habitat for Humanity. Cosmetology: This program combines classroom theory, clinical experience, work-based learning and portfolio development in completing the required 1,000 hours of curriculum to obtain a NYS license for a career in the appearance enhancement industry. Criminal Justice: Through classroom instruction, field trips and meetings with professionals in the field, students learn state-of-the-art techniques to prepare for post-secondary studies or a career in law enforcement and the criminal justice system. 2 year program Students start in their junior year. Culinary Arts: The Culinary Arts program teaches students the management and culinary skills needed for a career in the hospitality industry, including classroom study, lab work, mentored work experiences, and the opportunity to test their skills in competitions. The curriculum is based on ProStart, supported by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) & Renewable Energies: With classroom instruction and project-based learning, students learn design, installation and repair of HVAC systems, emerging technologies including wind, solar and geothermal, and can obtain EPA certifications. Students receive extensive training in home energy efficiency and also have the opportunity to earn the HEAT certificate. They can also earn an OSHA 10 Hour Safety Certificate. Media Communications: Our students don t just learn about media; our students make media. Using a state-of-the-art facility, students write, film, edit, and produce news broadcasts, commercials, promotional items and films. Students can earn college credits while gaining valuable hands-on experience producing media for regional clients. Welding/Metal Fabrication: (CGEC Only) Based on skill standards from the American Welding Society, students focus on safety, metal fabrication and basic machine-tool operation in the metal-working industry for employment or further education. FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS ONLY 3-D Printing & Prototyping: This course prepares seniors for careers in the newest and rapidly growing fields in the 21st century. Students learn about 3-D design and printing, CNC machining and engineering principles. Students have the opportunity to earn college credit and CSWA accreditation at the end of the year. Aviation: (Scotia) Refer to CTE description. Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA): Through classroom theory, laboratory and hands-on clinical instruction, students who complete the program are eligible to take the NYS Nurse Assistant Certification Exam. Green Technologies & Renewable Energy: This course prepares seniors for emerging careers that can literally make a world of difference. Students learn about solar/photovoltaic energy, wind technology, renewable energy and energy saving solutions. Students complete a DC Electricity course and are eligible to receive five college credits through Hudson Valley Community College. The program includes work-based learning, a senior project, and networking with local businesses. STEM at SUNY Poly: This early college high school program provides seniors with hands-on learning in cutting-edge technologies and research settings at the SUNY Poly campus in Albany. Students will enroll in a college course each semester and learn about career options in the emerging technologies changing our world. Theater Institute at Sage (TIS): The TIS Internship program is an intensive, one semester theater experience that is based on the internship program model used by the former New York State Theater Institute (NYSTI). Students will work on four productions during the semester while earning high school credit and taking college courses
3 NEW VISIONS Academically Challenging Programs for High School Seniors Only Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM): STEM students are at the forefront of technology in all fields. They explore careers that: combat world hunger; rescue the environment; save thousands of children from fatal disease; and, help millions of people live more comfortable and productive lives. Students study how to implement state-of-the-art science as they explore the world of technology and engineering. Scientific Research & World Health: Gain a worldwide perspective on health while learning how scientific and mathematical principles are applied to promote health and prevent disease. Located at the University at Albany s East Campus in East Greenbush, students participate in health focused research environments. Visual & Performing Arts: This unique program provides opportunities to explore a wide array of careers in the visual and performing arts. Based at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy, the program blends an integrated curriculum in college-level English, music, art, theatre and film studies with hands-on experience in a creative academic environment. CTE SUPPORT SERVICES Work-Based Learning (WBL): Both Career/Technical and Career Studies students will participate in WBL activities, that are collaborations between employers and schools to provide structured work-related learning experiences. These activities may include job shadowing, internships, classroom speakers and service learning projects. Student Support Services: Both the Career Development Center and Guidance Services work with home district school counselors and Questar III teachers to assist students with personal, career and academic development. Career counseling, advisement and college preparation are available, as well as student achievement recognition. Student Activities: In addition to Career/Technical and academic studies, Questar III students have a variety of extra-curricular activities available that encourage leadership, volunteerism, interaction with community and business people, as well as regional, state and national competitions. Some of those activities include: B.E.S.T. Portfolio, National Technical Honor Society, ProStart, Service Learning and SkillsUSA. Automotive Services I & II: Students are prepared for entry-level jobs in the automotive field. This program provides hands-on training and classroom instruction for diverse learning styles. Students study brake systems, suspension systems, beginning electrical, and engine rebuild. Building Trades: (CGEC Only) Building Trades prepares students for entry-level positions in the construction, facilities maintenance and custodial fields. Students complete group projects that are work-based in nature, involve problem solving, and utilize hands-on skills. Hospitality & Lodging Skills, Tasks and Results Training (START): (REC Only) This two-year program trains students for entry-level careers within the hospitality and lodging industry through real-world knowledge, skills, and job training. Students can earn professional certification from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute s START program. Introduction to Employment: Students explore job experiences in the areas of food services, retail and business skills. Students perform handson job specific activities with job coaches. Each student completes a portfolio and has assistance in locating job opportunities. Introduction to Food Services: Students are trained for entry-level positions within the food service industry. Students engage in hands-on lessons and learn preparation and food skills. An opportunity to work in an approved commercial site during school hours is available. CAREER STUDIES ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Questar III offers a wide array of general education offerings, including: Alternative Learning Program with Career/Technical Education Integrated Academics TASC (GED) for Students with Special Needs Alternative High School Equivalency Programs Special Education: The Special Education Department provides students with skills to promote individualized learning through project-based learning. Students are offered transition services to prepare them for life after high school. Extensive support services are also available to component districts.

PROGRAMS FOR ADULT LEARNERS LPN: Questar III s Adult Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program utilizes a hands-on, interactive approach to learning, which promotes better understanding of the curriculum and nursing process. The LPN program participates in Federal Pell Grant and Direct Loan programs and is approved for use of ACCESS/VR, WIA, and VA benefits. Financial aid counseling is available. Adult Literacy: GED is replaced by (TASC) the Test Assessing Secondary Competency. This new test means new academic requirements for all adult students in order to achieve a High School Equivalency Diploma. We offer classes for persons 21 of age or older geared toward individual students academic levels. We also offer English classes for foreign speaking students (ESOL). Workforce Development: HVAC/R Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, & Refrigeration A comprehensive course designed for entry-level technicians in the heating/air conditioning/refrigeration market. Adult students will receive a Certificate of Employability and the opportunity to interview with an HVAC company. Welding: A comprehensive course designed to allow adult students to earn the American Welding Society (AWS) SENSE-Level I Certification the OSHA 10 hour Construction Safety Credential and a Certificate of Employability. Photovoltaic Installation: A comprehensive course that teaches adult students how to install and maintain residential and commercial photovoltaic systems. Adult students who complete the program can earn industry recognized certifications. Adults interested please call:
5 Questar III is a great place to learn and explore a career before entering college, technical school or the workforce. Courses are taught in real-world environments, from airports to universities. CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) is the 21st century version of votec or vocational programs. Students in these classes work towards a Regents Diploma, and some may be eligible for the Technical Endorsement on that Diploma. Each of these programs includes the potential for students to earn college credits through articulation agreements, and many have industry certification opportunities available. Students also benefit from Technology Centers that Work (TCTW), a school improvement initiative which increases academic and technical standards in CTE programs. Talk to your parents and family about a program that interests you. Meet with your school counselor so you can work together on planning your schedule. 6 According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, 18 out of the 20 fastest growing occupations within the next decade will require career and technical education (CTE). Questar III, a Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), is an educational service agency providing instructional and support services to 23 public school districts in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene counties.
