4 Sport is iconic in Australia. It is part of Australia s cultural identity and is economically significant.

5 Australia has consistently achieved outstanding success at an international level, both in elite athletic performance and in organising world-class sporting events. Australia has a strong and sophisticated sports industry, with highly developed skills in sports administration, coaching science and athlete management. Australian expertise ranges from management of community-level sporting organisations to national sporting bodies. Major sporting bodies have formal corporate governance structures and business expertise in broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing, membership and facilities management. The Australian Government has extensive involvement in communitylevel sport to elite athlete programs through the Australian Sports Commission. National sports policy and sports education emphasises the broader societal benefits of sport through community wellbeing and preventative health. The sports industry in Australia directly employs people (CSIRO 2013), which equates to one per cent of the total workforce. Australian households spend A$8.4 billion each year on sporting services and products. Export of sporting goods averaged $A442 million per year over the past seven years. Australia is in the top 10 countries for Olympic gold medals. Australian Education and Training: Sport 3

6 Australian sports education and training Australia s passion for sport has underpinned the creation of a dynamic sports education industry with specialist expertise in sport management, sport science, sport technology, coaching and fitness. Sports education programs offer practical training based on strong engagement with the sport industry to provide students with hands-on experience. Australian universities are training the next generation of elite athletes and sport industry leaders through dynamic and multi-disciplinary programs. Broadly, tertiary education in sport is offered through two streams: science-based studies, including health, sports science, physiology, nutrition, exercise and drug replacement therapy business-based studies, including strategic planning, marketing, management and leadership Australian vocational education and training (VET) courses focus on sports coaching and fitness skills. VET programs prepare students for careers as exercise trainers, facility managers, athletes, coaches, sport program administrators, sport officials and executive managers. A national training package for sport and fitness provides a quality framework for skills development in the industry. Collaborative partnerships between top researchers, industry bodies, and government conduct cutting-edge research with practical application to advance Australia s elite sport performance and community-level sport participation. > > Major sporting events Delivering major international sporting events is a field in which Australia has significant experience and expertise. The government streamlines state and national efforts for sports education and participation through the Australian Sports Commission. National objectives to achieve excellence in sport and to increase community sport participation are supported through investment in sport research, industry partnerships, sports education delivery and collaboration across community, government and industry. These include: Australian Sports Commission Australian Institute of Sport Exercise & Sports Science Australia Sports Medicine Australia Service Skills Australia Collaborative Research Networks industry partnerships. To meet national sporting objectives, Australia invests in cutting-edge sporting technologies, research for peak athletic performance and training within state-of-the-art education institutions to ensure continued international performance. Sport in Australia also forms an integral part of national health objectives, with a focus on increasing community sport participation. Australian Sports Commission Australia s national sports administration and advisory agency, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), is a recognised world leader in the development of high performance sport and sport participation. ASC services include high performance coaching, sports science, sports information, sports management, education and resources, sports participation and the delivery of funding programs to national sporting organisations. > > Sports science and elite performance Australian institute of sport The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), part of the Australian Sports Commission, is Australia s worldclass sports training institute. The AIS offers skilled coaching across 26 sports within internationally acclaimed facilities, aided by outstanding coaching and access to cutting-edge sports science and sports medicine services. Elite athletic coaching is delivered from the AIS headquarters in Canberra and from athletic program centres including Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Sports dependant, some training is also delivered in Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom. The AIS Applied Research Centre forms collaborations with universities, businesses, sport organisations and government for research related to sports science and sports medicine. Australian Education and Training: Sport 5

8 The ASC s National Sport Research program facilitates research on significant sport issues by working with universities, research organisations and international sporting bodies. Research has included: 2013 CSIRO report on sport megatrends and the future of Australian sport 2009 Frontier Economics report on the economic contribution of sport to Australia joint federal and state CASRO Research Group project to collect annual data on physical activity trends, sport participation, social benefits and economic impacts ASC partnership with Sport English and UK Sport to promote Value of Sport (International Sport Research Forum, online monitoring service) University of South Australia report on children and young people s involvement in sport (health benefits of physical activity). Exercise and Sports Science Australia Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) is a peak body organisation committed to establishing and promoting the career paths of tertiary-trained exercise and sports science practitioners. ESSA provides accreditation in exercise physiology and sports science. Sports Medicine Australia Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) is a peak advisory body, and is world-recognised for expertise on medical and health issues related to sport. SMA delivers Safer Sport Program courses to national and international audiences about practical skills for sports injury prevention, injury management and crisis management techniques for the sporting environment. RESEARCH AND INNOVATION Australia s international reputation in sport performance and as a world-class supplier of sporting goods and services is a product of ongoing innovation, research and strategic planning. Significant collaboration exists between universities and industry to pursue innovative sports research. Examples include: Australian Research Council Linkage project, led by Griffith University together with the University of Sydney, Victoria University, Australian Sports Commission, Australian Institute of Sport, Australian Football League, Cricket Australia, Tennis Australia, undertaking comprehensive analysis of talent identification and development. Collaborative Research Network project ($5.57 million) in sports science, led by Bond University in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Sport, University of Queensland Diamantina Institute and the University of Sydney to identify ways to manage health, fitness and potential injury of athletes and in the wider community. RMIT University has developed internationally-recognised sports technology products such as the RMIT Superbike and is currently collaborating with Cricket Australia to develop a smart technology cricket ball. Research by Australia s national science institution, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), is helping to shape the work of the Australian Sports Commission in determining long-term sports policy and investment. The Future of Australian Sport report identified six megatrends shaping the future of Australian sport over the next 30 years: a perfect fit personalised sport for health and fitness from extreme to mainstream the rise of lifestyle sports more than sport the attainment of health, community and overseas aid objectives via sport everybody s game demographic, generational and cultural change new wealth, new talent economic growth and sports development in Asia tracksuits to business suits market pressures and new business models. 6 Australian Education and Training: Sport

10 HIGHER EDUCATION Australia s passion for sport has underpinned the development of a dynamic sports education industry. Australian universities are working with sporting organisations and elite athletes to cultivate the next generation of sport management leaders and athletes. Course disciplines include: exercise and sport science sport physiology health sciences sport nutrition sport coaching sport development sport management sport technology sport engineering The university sector is well-connected with the elite sports science network, providing students with valuable opportunities for work experience placements and facilitating research with practical industry application. An Australian sport-related degree provides graduates with skills to work in a variety of settings including: elite sports and major sporting events community sports fitness industry allied and preventative health industry Accredited postgraduate courses in clinical exercise physiology provide career opportunities in clinical settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centres, medical clinics and multi-disciplinary allied health practices and community health. Hubs of sport sector research and innovation exist at many universities in Australia. Following is a limited number of institutional profiles. For a comprehensive list of providers, visit Bond University Bond University s Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine features a specialist sports science laboratory, fitted with high-tech performance monitoring equipment for elite athletes. Degrees are taught by world-recognised academics and provide opportunities for working on cutting-edge research or to undertake practical work experience. Bond University is leading a sports science Collaborative Research Network project ($5.57 million), collaborating with the Australian Institute of Sport, University of Queensland Diamantina Institute and University Sydney to identify way to manage health and fitness and potential injury of athletes and in the wider community. Deakin University Deakin University offers a variety of sport courses across health sciences, business, education (teaching), development and management. Courses provide hands-on experience, preparing graduates to take leadership roles in advancing the role of sport in healthy communities. Teaching and research staff are experts in their fields with broad international links and experience. Work experience placement options include leading organisations such as the Australian Football League and National Rugby League football clubs, the Australian Weightlifting Federation, Surf Life Saving Australia, the Victorian Institute of Sport and Bicycle Victoria. Deakin University s sports management degrees are offered within the framework of business education emphasising executive business skills including strategy, marketing, finance, management and development. 8 Australian Education and Training: Sport

11 Edith Cowan University Edith Cowan University offers degrees in sport management, aimed at providing students with the professional skills needed for middle and senior level management in the sport industry. Courses cover management, marketing, communication, planning, finance, community engagement, facility management, legal aspects, and event management. Practical industry placements provide work experience and networking opportunities. Griffith University Griffith University s sport management degrees provide business knowledge and skills. The Centre for Tourism, Sport and Services Research, part of the Griffith Business School, is Australia s most-awarded tourism educator and a leader in sport and events. La Trobe University La Trobe University s sport management degree was designed and is delivered in collaboration with industry professionals. It combines business foundations with essential sport-specific knowledge and skills that are recognised in Australia and overseas. Students can choose from one of the largest offering of sport subjects in Australia and take advantage of placement and networking opportunities. Macquarie University Macquarie University offers a Bachelor of Business Administration in Sport Management. The course is designed to equip students with the strategic management and practical and personal skills necessary to work successfully in a highly competitive global environment. Graduate students are able to be part of a competitive market through gaining a combination of vocational skills and a broad-based quality business education. 12 RMIT University RMIT University offers science-based degrees in international sports technology as well as applied degrees in exercise and sport science. Sports technology courses teach engineering skills to develop innovative sports products and tools for training and performance assessment. RMIT has developed world-recognised products such as the RMIT Superbike and is collaborating with Cricket Australia to develop a smart technology cricket ball. Southern Cross University Southern Cross University s Diploma of Sport Management (Surfing Studies) was developed in response to industry demand and in conjunction with Surfing Australia to provide the knowledge and skills required of employees and managers in the global surf industry. Students gain the necessary business skills to develop a career in sport management and in the surfing industry, including sport marketing, events planning, sport media, small business and entrepreneurship. The course involves work experience in the industry and is also a potential pathway to studying the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science. University of Ballarat The University of Ballarat (UB) is Australia s only regional, multi-sector university. The university offers a Bachelor of Sport Management degree, and has an option for a double degree with a Bachelor of Business. The degree is designed to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge about the sport industry, combined with an extensive grounding in business expertise. The program incorporates professional practice for students to apply newly acquired knowledge and skills in a sporting industry setting. University of Canberra The University of Canberra s sport studies programs are located within the health faculty. They include sport coaching, exercise science, nutrition, management and psychology. Undergraduate programs feature industry work-based learning placements. Postgraduate programs provide opportunities to collaborate with major sporting bodies. The National Institute of Sport Studies at the University of Canberra conducts research on optimising human performance and health through exercise. The University of Canberra has a strong track record in research and teaching in sport and is striving to be an international centre of excellence in the field through the development of a new Sports Hub. University Of the Sunshine Coast University of the Sunshine Coast offers a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Science (Sport Management) degree, providing students with business knowledge and a background in sport and exercise science. Studies include sports marketing, management, human resources, anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, exercise prescription, sports medicine and sport psychology. Graduates can manage sports clubs or associations, undertake public relations and sports promotion, obtain corporate sponsorship, or frame sports rules and structures in a sporting club or association. 10 Australian Education and Training: Sport

13 University of Sydney The University of Sydney offers studies in exercise and sport science through its health faculty. The discipline focuses on the integration of exercise and physical activity into health care, sports performance, disease prevention and rehabilitation. Students explore metabolism and physiology, human motor learning and control, the principles of exercise programming, nutrition, and musculoskeletal principles of exercise. Integrated clinical practice instruction, practicums, and case studies provide advanced skills and experience essential for professional practice. University of Technology, Sydney The University of Technology, Sydney offers degrees in human movement, sport and exercise and sport management. The Australian Centre for Olympic Studies coordinates a database of research on the Olympic Games and other major international sporting events to assist with similar future events. University of Western Australia University of Western Australia s School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health is internationally recognised for excellence in research and teaching in the areas of sport science, health promotion and recreation management. Research disciplines include the biomechanics of human movement, exercise physiology, rehabilitation and performance psychology. University of Wollongong The University of Wollongong s School of Health Sciences offers a variety of exercise science courses focussed on equipping students with strong clinical and professional skills, including physiology, biomechanics, rehabilitation and nutrition and dietetics. Courses are fully accredited by Exercise and Sports Science Australia. Victoria University Victoria University provides degree courses in exercise science, physical education and sport and recreation management. A Bachelor of Engineering Science (Sports Engineering) trains students to apply engineering technology to sports equipment, for enhancement of athletic performance, minimisation of injuries and rehabilitation. Courses include opportunities to connect with elite sports institutions and sporting clubs. Victoria University research degree options include clinical exercise and applied psychology for sport. Victoria University s Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL) conducts leading research in collaboration with government, industry and community associations on topics such as high performance sport, global sport events and exercise science. 14 VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING > > Industry Skills Councils Australia has 11 Industry Skills Councils. As pivotal change agents within the national training system, the mandate of Australia s Industry Skills Councils is to bring together industry, educators and governments to unite them on a common industry-led agenda for action on skills and workforce development. Service Skills Australia represents the sport, fitness and recreation sectors. The Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package was developed by Service Skills Australia in line with the Australian Qualifications Framework. The training package provides a national framework for ensuring quality in training delivered to the sports industry. The package includes competency standards, assessment guidelines and qualifications for all Australian registered training organisations. Australian vocational education and training (VET) providers offer courses related to fitness, coaching and sport administration. Fitness courses provide skills and knowledge to work in a training capacity, while administration courses are geared toward fitness business activities. Registered training organisations in Australia train qualified skilled workers across various sport industry occupations including: sport coaching fitness instruction community health and well being sporting events exercise facility management Australian College of Sports Therapy The Australian College of Sports Therapy (ACST) offers nationally-recognised, government-accredited sport and healthcare courses, in sports therapy, musculo-skeletal therapy, and sports and remedial massage from Certificate IV to Advanced Diploma. Short courses are offered in clinical sports taping, assessment and treatment of sports injuries, myofascial dry needling, corrective exercise therapy and clinical practice management. Courses combine theory and practice with options for practical experience by working at the ACST clinic. Brisbane North Institute of TAFE Brisbane North Institute of TAFE offers certificate and diploma level fitness programs with studies in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, exercise instruction and designing fitness programs. Central Institute of Technology Central Institute of Technology, Western Australia, offers certificate and diploma sport and recreation courses in fitness, sport and recreation and sport development, and a short online course in health promotion activities. Central Institute s sport development courses teach students to develop, coordinate, coach and officiate in a wide range of sports and help single athletes or whole teams improve performance and reach goals. Skills include sports science, sport psychology, nutrition, and planning and conducting training programs. Fitness courses provide practical skills, with training opportunities at CentralVibe gym to allow students to work with real clients in a fully operating gym and fitness centre surrounding. 15 Challenger Institute of Technology The Visage Training Centre for Health and Lifestyle, Challenger Institute of Technology, Western Australia, delivers sport and fitness courses to equip individuals with a range of skills to gain employment in a broad range of fitness related industries. Training is delivered in the Institute s gymnasium and includes an excellent structured work placement program with our industry partners. On offer are certificate courses in sport coaching and fitness. College of Sports & Fitness College of Sports & Fitness offers courses in sport development, sport coaching and sport and recreation (administration and organisational skills). TAFE NSW TAFE NSW (New South Wales) offers a range of courses to prepare students for sports administration, fitness training and coaching careers. Across a number of TAFE NSW institutes, certificate and diploma courses are available in fitness, aquatics, sports coaching, sport and recreation, and in facility management. TAFE Queensland TAFE Queensland s sport courses are taught within a community wellbeing context. Courses include a short course in athlete massage, certificate courses in fitness and massage therapy, and a diploma in events (surf) and in sports coaching and sports development.
