2 Welcome Welcome to the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council Coach Education and Club Development Programme for 2016/17. At Council, we have a strong commitment to support the ongoing development of coaches, sports volunteers and sports club administrators throughout the Borough. We have compiled this programme to provide opportunities to further develop knowledge and skills, relevant to these roles, in enjoyable and engaging environments. The programme offers a mixture of minimum operating standards for clubmark workshops, Club Leaders NI workshops to support clubs in the day to day running of the club and coachwork style sessions which are practical in nature, relating to optimal performance. A Coach Development Seminar will also take place on 2 April 2017 with the focus on children s coaching, and will highlight the key role that coaching plays in the development of our young athletes. Key theoretical principals and practical application of these principles will be overarching themes for the seminar, to assist coaches currently engaged in coaching to develop the whole child. 4 Coach Education 2016/2017 Course: Masterclass in Partnership Working for Sports Clubs Date: Monday 24th October 2016 Time: 6.30pm 9.00pm Cost: Free Venue: Craigavon Civic Facilitator: Leeann Kelly and Andrew Talbot from Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA) Overview: This highly interactive session will explore models of best practice principles that underpin successful collaborative work and the tutors will tailor the session to suit the needs of those present. Content: The session will provide clubs with practical tips that can be used easily in everyday activities to impact the effectiveness of their partnerships. Increasingly clubs are applying for funding and need to be able to demonstrate the impact that they have had through the investment they have received. Measuring impact is embedded in the learning outcomes for the session which include: Knowing and understanding the impact that working together can have on all partners involved and on the wider community; An increased understanding of how to develop and maintain effective relationships with others to achieve a common goal. Course: First Aid for Sport Date: Thursday 3rd November and Thursday 10th November 2016 Venue: Craigavon Civic Cost: Content: This course will cover elements of First Aid applicable to anyone who is responsible for coaching/supervising a team. The course will be certifi ed and attendance at both sessions is compulsory in order to gain accreditation Course: Effective Organisational Structures Date: Tuesday 15th November 2016 Venue: Ardmore Recreation Cost: Free Overview: The way a club is legally structured and its status can have a signifi cant impact on club leaders, both on their club and on them personally. Get it right and a club can be run effectively and may benefi t fi nancially. Content: Why getting the correct structure and status is important; The types of legal structure (CASC, Charity) and the pros and cons of each; Why become incorporated?; Examples of how clubs have set themselves up; The process of changing your club s organisational structure and status; Hot topics (CASC, Gift Aid etc).

5 Course: Sports Psychology in Practice - Kelly Fay Date: Monday 28th November 2016 Cost: 5.00 Venue: Old Technical Building, Banbridge Facilitator: Kelley Fay Performance Skills Coach for Sports Institute of Northern Ireland; Lead Psychologist for British Para Snow Sport (including gold Paralympic medallist Kelly Gallagher & Charlotte Evans), Ulster Rugby Academy, Ulster Badminton, Ulster Swimming and Motorsport Ireland. Worked with a variety of athletes that have performed in the Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth Games and World Championships including athletes from athletics, bowls, camogie, golf, handball, swimming, soccer, GAA and netball. Content: A practical workshop looking at techniques on how to develop and maintain resilience in athletes to maximise their potential under pressure. This workshop will be of interest to coaches, athletes and parents from a variety of sports who have an interest in high level sporting performance. Course: Safeguarding Children & Young People Date: Monday 6th February 2017 Cost: Venue: Old Technical Building, Banbridge Content: This workshop aims to raise awareness of Child Protection issues in sport and introduces participants to the Code of Ethics and good Practice for Children s Sport. This workshop is important for all adults involved in children s sport, but is particularly recommended for Coaches, Leaders, Administrators and Offi cials. Course: Business Planning Date: Monday 20th February 2017 Cost: Free Venue: Old Technical Building, Banbridge Overview: It is important that clubs have a business plan so they know what they are trying to achieve and make sure they are heading in the right direction. An effective business plan can help you to manage your club better but also demonstrate understanding and controls to potential investors. Content: This seminar covers: What a business plan is and why your should have one; Who you should be involving in creating a business plan; How to develop a plan for your club using a simple framework; Practical advice on what to include in your plan, how to structure it and pitfalls to avoid.

6 Course: Sports Nutrition Sharon Madigan Date: Monday 27th February 2017 Cost: 5.00 Venue: Ardmore Recreation Facilitator: Dr Sharon Madigan Head of Performance Nutrition at the Irish Institute of Sport; Team Ireland Nutritionist at the London and Rio Olympics; Performance Nutritionist with the Ireland High Performance Boxing Team and Senior Ulster Rugby Team; Currently responsible for the delivery and coordination of nutrition services for elite Irish athletes across a range of Olympic and Paralympic sports including judo, rowing, sailing, triathlon, swimming and cycling. Sharon has also worked extensively with County and Club GAA teams over a number of years. Content: This innovative workshop will give specialist nutritional advice to athletes, parents and coaches in a practical setting. The menus and advice for pre and post competition will be easy to follow and practical for all levels of culinary ability. Course: Good Club Governance Date: Monday 13th March 2017 Cost: Free Venue: Craigavon Civic Overview: Good Governance is crucial to ensure a vibrant well run club uses its resources effectively for the benefi t of members and the local community, allowing participants to enjoy sport. Good Governance supports growth and development while managing the risks. A wee run organisation is attractive to new members, funders and sponsors. Content: This seminar covers: Why Governance matters; Club and Committee Structures; Leadership and effective Board members; A Governance Framework. Course: Designated Officer Date: Monday 22nd March 2017 Cost: Venue: Richhill Recreation Content: This workshop is aimed primarily at Designated Safeguarding Children s Offi cer s within sports clubs. The training provides them with further understanding to assist in their role of safeguarding children in sport. Attendees must have attended Safeguarding Children and Young People in Sport prior to attending this workshop and must be over 18 years of age.

7 Course: Coach Development Seminar Date: Sunday 2nd April 2017 Time: 10am 3pm Cost: 5.00 Venue: Richhill Recreation Content: This seminar will focus on children s coaching and will highlight the key role that coaching plays in the development of our young athletes. The fi rst workshop entitled Delivering Engaging Sessions for Young People will equip coaches with the valuable knowledge and skills needed to better meet the needs of year olds. Through the use of practical examples, coaches will learn about new participant s needs, including how to build their self-confi dence, motivation and self-esteem. The second workshop will look at positive behaviour management in sport and aims to increase coaches awareness of the behaviour of young participants and the impact of the coach on the behaviour of others. The intention is to help coaches create a supportive coaching environment that will promote positive behaviour and fi nd appropriate solutions to deal with unwanted and challenging behaviour.
