Emphasis on relationships of biology to human beings with emphasis on molecular genetics, heredity, major body systems, disease, and human interactions with the environment. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. Student Learning Outcomes Students will be able to: 1. Explain how the human body is organized from macromolecules to organ systems. 2. Discuss the impact of disease, drugs, and environment on the human body. 3. Appraise how humans affect the global ecology and climate. Lecture: Monday and Wednesday 9:35-11:00 Technology Center 158/159 Text: Biology of Humans (customized for OCC with e-text and Mastering Biology) by Goodenough and McGuire 5 th edition Pearson Mastering Biology: Homework is assigned in Mastering Biology. This comes free with the customized textbook available at the OCC bookstore (cost $125.70). If you buy a textbook elsewhere, you can purchase just Mastering Biology online at for $60.50 (or $91.30 with e-text). The course ID is MBSOGO74408 Website: Exams: click on MyOCC, log in, click on student tab, click on Human Biology You will each be required to turn in 4 Parscore forms during 2 nd week of class. You will then be supplied scantrons for each exam Attendance: Lecture- Lecture attendance is extremely important. Through experience, I have found that students that do not attend my lectures regularly fail the class. Attendance will be checked at the beginning of class, each class session. If you are absent more than 3 times FOR ANY you may be dropped from the class. If you arrive very late it will be counted as ½ an absence.

2 Grading: 4 Lecture Exams 150 pts. each 600 pts 60% of grade 25 In class worksheets 8 pts. each 200 pts 20% of grade 4 Mastering Biology HW 50 pts. each 200 pts 20% of grade Total 1000pts Grading Scale: % A 80%- 89.9% B 70%-79.9% C 60%-69.9% D Below 60% F Lecture Exams:- Exams are to be taken during scheduled times and dates. If you miss an exam for an OCCsanctioned excuse you MUST PROVIDE PROOF*** or have an excuse that has been cleared in advance by me, you may take a make-up. If you must miss an exam, CALL ME IMMEDIATELY and leave a message on my voice mail ( extension 21272) explaining the situation or me ([email protected]). You cannot make up more than one exam in a semester. *** If you are sick, you must show proof that you went to a doctor or the health center. If your car broke down, I need to see the towing bill. If someone passed away, I need to see the program from the services. If you have extraordinary circumstances, please just talk to me. You will not be excused to use the restroom during an exam. If you have a medical condition that makes this an unreasonable expectation, please discuss this with me in advance. If you leave the class during an exam, the exam must be turned in. ALL electronic devices (such as cell phones, ipods, ipads, tablets, laptops, calculators) are NOT allowed on your person during an exam (this includes your pocket). All electronic devices must be turned off during an exam or quiz and either stored in your backpack or purse or given to the instructor with your ID for safe keeping during the exam. Those that do not comply with this policy will receive an F grade on the exam with a score of 0. OCC ID cards are required for all exams for personal identification. If you must make up an exam: 1. You must contact me the day you miss or as soon as possible regarding the absence. No exam will be allowed to be made up regardless of reason if I am not contacted by the class session you return to school. 2. All make-up exams will take place on Friday, 5/20 from 9-noon. 3. You cannot make up more than one exam for any reason. 4. Exams can be made up for full credit only with a valid and verified excuse. 5. Make-up exams may have different format than the original exam (for example, it may contain a large written component).

3 Homework: There are four Mastering Biology homework assignments due throughout the semester. You have 3 ½ to 4 weeks to complete each assignment. You are expected to work on the assignment weekly. Each assignment is worth 50 points. However, there are more points available than you need. This will allow you to choose assignments that you think would be the most valuable to you. After the due date for each assignment, I will transfer you points to the Blackboard grade book. You can earn a maximum of 55 points for each homework assignment (50 are required and 5 additional points are extra credit). For example, if you earn 60 points on Mastering Biology, only 55 points will be transferred to Blackboard. There are NO EXTENSIONS GRANTED FOR ANY including computer crashes, website crash, accident, illness, or power outage. Worksheets: As part of each lecture, you will complete an in class worksheet. These are distributed at the beginning of lecture and turned in at the end of lecture. They are worth 200 points (8 pts each), which is 20% of your grade. You must attend the entire lecture to earn full credit on the worksheet. You will receive reduced credit if you arrive late to lecture or leave lecture early. Worksheets cannot be made up if you miss lecture. If you have perfect attendance and do all 27 worksheets, you will earn 16 points extra credit (27x16=216 pts.). If you miss one lecture and do 26 worksheets, you will earn 8 points extra credit (26x8=208 pts). If you miss two lectures and do 25 worksheets you earn the required 200 pts (but no extra credit). Lectures: All lecture slides are available on Blackboard. They are not complete, so you will need to print them out and bring them to class. A tablet version will also be available if you want to take notes on your ipad or tablet instead of printing out a hard copy. Academic Honesty Policy Dishonest conduct in lecture or lab will not be tolerated. If you choose to cheat, you will be dismissed from the class and receive an F grade on the assignment/test or in the class depending on the severity of the offense. In addition, the Dean of Students will be notified for further action, which may include (among other actions) a notation on your permanent OCC Student Records. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: Looking at another person s exam Talking during an exam Having notes on your person during an exam Having an electronic device such as a cell phone, ipod, or Smartwatch on your person during an exam. Plagiarism on any assignment for this class Copying someone s homework/worksheet or assignment or letting someone copy your homework/worksheet. If it is determined that you have done any of the above, a report will be filed with the Dean of Students. LET THIS SERVE AS YOUR FIRST WARNING, there will be NO other warnings. Electronics policy Small electronic devices (such as cell phones and ipods) with the exception of a simple-function calculator are prohibited for use in this class. Those that do not comply with this policy will be removed from the class. Laptops, tablets, and ipads are allowed during lecture for the purpose of note-taking and viewing PowerPoint slides only. Using laptops/tablets/ipads for any other purpose during lecture will result in the dismissal of the student from lecture.
