Emphasis is placed on understanding relationships of business, government, and the consumer in a global economy. This is a survey course designed to give students a brief outline of most of the major activities in business. This course is a hybrid course. You are required to attend class sessions but all exams will be administered online remotely. Lecture slide presentations are given as homework therefore in class we will be conducting interactive exercises and group work. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of and familiarity with the world of business and its related terminology. 2. Consider the ethical and social responsibility issues involved in the current business environment. 3. Evaluate the global economy and its impact on U.S. economy. 4. Identify and define the functions of and challenges facing management. 5. Describe the responsibilities and significance of human resource management. 6. Explain the basic accounting process and interpret the three primary financial statements. 7. Outline the marketing function and describe its significance. 8. Describe the United States financial and investment systems and their role in our economic system. Page 1 of 5

2 GRADING: Students should keep an up-to-date total of their points, and keep all of their returned papers and tests until the end of the semester. Individual totals will be computed once at the end of the semester. Assignments are subject to change at my discretion. The following grade scale will be used to calculate grades: Individual Intro Paper 5% Business Plan Project 25% In-Class Participation 30% Exams 40% Total 100% A = 90% + B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% F = 59% or less WRITTEN & ORAL WORK: All work must be submitted and/or presented on the assigned due date, before the start of class. An assignment is considered late once class has begun the day the assignment is due. Late assignments will not be accepted. All papers are to be typed with double spacing, 1 margins, page numbers on each page, and your full name listed in the header of each page of your assignment. All work must be cited using the APA citation style. ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION: Punctual attendance is expected of all students. In addition, students should miss a class only if absolutely necessary. Students are expected to read the chapters before class and be prepared to actively participate in class. College regulations state that a student may be dropped from a class when cumulative absences equal twice the weekly hours of a given class. I have the right to enforce this policy at my discretion. No cell phones, ipods, or headphones are to be used during class. I will confiscate these appliances and return them to the student at the end of the semester. TECHNICAL ISSUES: Pearson will notify me if there is a technical issue that would prevent you from submitting any work on time. If the technical issue is Pearson s responsibility, you will be granted a time extension and I will notify all students of this time extension. If the technical problem is on your end, you need to ensure that it is resolved early so that your work can be submitted before any class deadlines. There will be no time extensions if the technical problems are within your system. 3 EXAMS: There will be a total of 4 exams with 75 questions each. The final exam is noncumulative. Tests are multiple choice and true/false questions. All tests will be taken online. Ensure you have a reliable Internet connection before taking an exam. Tests are available during the regularly scheduled class time during the week of the exam (see schedule on the last page). You have 2 hours after you have opened the exam to complete each of the four exams. Be sure to access the exam immediately when it opens at the beginning of class time on exam day. You will be shown questions in random order, without the ability to go back and revisit questions. Think carefully before submitting each answer, as you will not be able to go back and change your answers. The computer will not allow you to save any more answers after your 2 hours have expired. You can submit the exam after your time has expired, but only those answers that were saved before your time expired will be counted. Watch the clock! Once you access the test, the 2 hours begin and cannot be stopped. Also, make sure you click the save button for all your answers before you submit the test for grading (and before your 2 hours are up). Any unsaved answers are counted as incorrect. It is always a good idea to write down your answers on a sheet of paper, just in case you encounter technical problems during the exam. THERE ARE NO MAKEUP EXAMS, NO RE-OPENING OF EXAMS BECAUSE YOU DID NOT GET YOUR ANSWERS SAVED IN TIME, AND NO ALLOWANCES FOR NOT KNOWING WHAT DATES OR TIMES THE EXAMS WERE OPEN. MAKEUP POLICY: There are no make-ups for any missed assignments or exams. It is your responsibility to keep track of all testing dates and take the exams during the times posted. The only exception to this policy is if you can bring me a doctor s note that verifies that you were unable to take the exam during the days of availability (due to hospitalization, for example). Then I may consider allowing you to take an alternate test at my discretion. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY: Please note that this course follows the guidelines as described in the Ohlone College Policy on Academic Dishonesty which can be found at the following URL: COPYING AND PASTING MORE THAN 3 WORDS IN A ROW FROM THE INTERNET IS A VIOLATION OF THE ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY. In an American higher education course you are expected to research ideas but ultimately you are required to post your own thoughts in your own wording. If you reference something someone else has written, give credit to that person by posting a link or clearly citing the source you used. The majority of your postings must be in your own words and not copied from another student or any other source. Academic dishonesty includes copying and pasting more than 3 words from the Internet. If I notice or sense any students collaborating on exams, written papers, or discussion responses, I reserve the right to take any of the appropriate actions as stated in the Policy on Academic Dishonesty, including but not limited to dropping the student(s) from this course or assigning an F grade for the semester. DROP POLICY & DATES: If you do not attend the first day of class, you will be dropped from the course. Sunday, February 5, is the last day to drop without a W grade. 4 last day to drop with a W grade. I do not drop students. This is your responsibility. All students whose names appear on my roster at the end of the semester will receive a grade based on the scale in this syllabus. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY: As your instructor, I am here to facilitate your learning and to push the boundaries of your knowledge of business. I believe in making it worthwhile for your participation and to be organized so that as students you can understand all that is expected of you throughout this course. I will always value and respect your opinions and expect the same in return. SUPPORT SERVICES - DISABLED STUDENTS PROGRAMS & SERVICES (DSPS) The DSPS program at Ohlone College offers support services for students with disabilities of all types. We have personalized counseling and program planning, learning skills instruction, adaptive physical education classes, adaptive technology, and accommodations needed for students to meet their academic and career goals. In order to receive services, students need to show proof of a disability verified by a professional qualified to do so. Students exiting high school need to bring in their last IEP with goals and any Psych reports from the school psychologist. Learning Disabled (LD) students will need to be retested. Other disabilities will probably need a report signed by a doctor.
