1 GENERAL MANAGER PROFILE: CHATTANOOGA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB CHATTANOOGA, TN THE GENERAL MANAGER OPPORTUNITY at CHATTANOOGA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Chattanooga Golf & Country Club (CGCC) is one of the premier golf clubs in the South, located on the Tennessee River in one of the most livable, progressive cities in the country. The Club s course is ranked as one of the top golf courses in the state, and has hosted numerous State and National championships. The Club enjoys a strong financial condition and is about to undertake a significant capital investment into its amenities, including adding a fitness center and a major expansion of the pool complex as well as various clubhouse improvements. CGCC is looking for its new General Manager to take the club from good to great to help lead the Club in fulfilling its vision of being THE East Tennessee country club with a complete offering of services to its members. The search will place particular emphasis on team development, driving organizational consistency, process and procedure development, financial management, maintaining the highest levels of service for all club services, and ensuring high levels of member satisfaction. CHATTANOOGA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB AND COMMUNITY The Chattanooga Golf and Country Club is located on the Tennessee River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Chattanooga, Tennessee is the 4th largest city in the state and is located near the border of Georgia at the junction of four interstate highways. The city has received national recognition for the renaissance of its beautiful downtown and redevelopment of its riverfront. The verdant Smoky Mountains and Tennessee River watershed support the greatest variety of flora of any area in the United States. With its scenic beauty, stable population and economy, civic vitality and cross-sector partnerships, fiscal integrity, and strategic location, Chattanooga is one of the most progressive and livable mid-size cities in the U.S. The city has won three national awards for outstanding "livability and nine Gunther Blue Ribbon Awards for excellence in housing and consolidated planning. The Chattanooga Golf & Country Club encompasses acres of waterfront property on the Tennessee River. The club s location and architectural design provide the perfect venue for casual or elegant dining, fellowship, and unmatched golf. This private, member-owned historical club boasts a championship 18 hole golf course, a swim and tennis center, and a 58,000 square foot clubhouse with dining rooms for its members, as well as large banquet facilities. Since 1896, The Chattanooga Golf and Country Club has been dedicated to providing members and their families with the finest amenities in recreation, upscale dining, and social interests in a private club
2 setting. The club is the oldest course at its original site in Tennessee. Designed by the world renowned architect, Donald Ross, and enhanced in 2005 by Bill Bergin, Chattanooga Golf and Country Club has been the site of many prestigious tournaments at the local, state, and national level, including the 1920 Southern Amateur won by the celebrated amateur, Bobby Jones.. Over the years, Chattanooga Golf and Country Club has been visited and enjoyed by many of the game s greatest legends including Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, and Arnold Palmer and is annually ranked as one of the top courses in the state by Golf Digest. The clubhouse is a 58,000 square foot Tudor-style facility on the bank of the Tennessee River. It features three full service dining rooms and five banquet rooms and offers a dining experience like no other. The Overlook Grille, with a covered climate controlled deck overlooking the Tennessee River, is the Club s newest dining room for a casual but elegant dining experience. The Chattanooga Golf and Country Club has facilities to host events from 4 to 500 people. Summers at the pool area are filled with fun events including Sunday Family nights and all day holiday events. Chattanooga Golf and Country Club also has a fun and competitive swim team for children ages 5 to 18. Tennis is played year round day or night on 4 outdoor courts. A $1.2M renovation is planned to refresh the clubhouse. Also, a Pool/Fitness Complex - Family Activity Center project is being planned at $6.5M. MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to provide Chattanooga s most desirable golf and country club member experience and sustain it for future generations. CHATTANOOGA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB BY THE NUMBERS Approximately 715 Total memberships; 260 Social (widows included) $3M Gross volume (not including dues/assessments) $2.9M Annual dues volume $2M F&B volume $30,000 Initiation fee, Regular; $5,000 Social $5,700 Annual dues, Regular; $4,055 Social $2.5M Gross payroll 140 Employees (FTE) in season; 95 in off season 22,500 rounds of golf per year 10 Board members, each serving three year terms CHATTANOOGA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB WEBSITE: GENERAL MANAGER POSITION DESCRIPTION The General Manager (GM) has responsibility for all day-to-day non-golf operations of Chattanooga Golf & Country Club (CGCC), and coordinates closely with the long tenured and highly regarded Golf Professional and Golf Course Superintendent.
3 The role of GM at CGCC, as the face of the Club, requires a strong embrace of community values and enjoyment of a small town, larger city environment where activities and relationships, both in the Club and outside of its confines, are clearly linked. Direct Reports of the GM are all Clubhouse teammates, and he/she administers and collaborates with the Club s sports professionals to ensure successful financial planning and outcomes, and consistency of member service delivery and coordination of activities. VISIONARY The GM must be a collaborative thought partner with the Board, recognizing the importance of keeping CGCC on the cutting edge of country club excellence by having a keen understanding of current and future trends, demographics, legislative, economic, and social issues. S/he should be decisive and set aggressive goals and objectives to ensure the Club s current and future success. FINANACIAL MANAGEMENT The GM must have sound financial management skills including the ability to oversee the preparation and management of annual operating and multi-year capital budgets supporting the strategic and tactical initiatives and expectations that s/he has established with the Board. He/she is ultimately responsible to ensure that appropriate safeguards and controls are in place for all CGCC s primary assets (membership, staff, amenities, etc.), whether it is for physical safety purposes or for the protection and long-term financial success of the Club. MEMBER RETENTION & RECRUITMENT The GM must lead CGCC s membership recruitment and retention efforts, working closely with the Club s Membership Committee. It is very critical that s/he understands the local market and economy and has to be comfortable and competent being an integral and proactive part of developing relationships that lead to membership interest and/or business opportunities, and is effective in orienting new members so that their initial experience with CGCC results in constant use of the Club. The GM is a catalyst for identifying new programs/services and enhancing current ones for members and their guests to increase club usage, member satisfaction, and member retention. STRATEGIC PLANNING In partnership with the Board, the GM must lead the development of a strategic plan/business plan road map for the current and future success of the Club. The GM must be able to identify issues, needs, goals and objectives to help ensure the perpetuation and continued viability of the Club. MEMBER, BOARD, AND COMMITTEE RELATIONS The GM must ensure that member satisfaction is always the first priority for his/her efforts as well as those of the entire team. Providing sincere and visibly engaged leadership and interaction with all facets of the membership and their guests, as well as being a consistent and positive force behind the creation and continuous enhancement of all aspects of CGCC it a top priority. He/she must be visible, approachable and available to his/her membership. Recognizing that the overall Member Experience and meeting the expectations of CGCC members is of critical importance to his/her long term success.
4 The GM is expected to be an active participant at board and club committee meetings, making thoughtful recommendations to set policies and strategies to achieve the Club s goals and objectives, as well as being the operational expert providing advice and evaluation. EMPLOYEE RELATIONS The GM must ensure that appropriately skilled and competent departmental managers are in place for all key positions and that each of them does the same in their respective areas of responsibility. He/she must set standards of performance for all departments, and hold them accountable for maintaining these standards within CGCC, most especially in member service areas, but also in all back of house and employee areas as well. He/she needs to recognize and respect the team and their contributions, and needs to be a strong advocate for the tools and environment they have in order to provide positive, consistent member experiences. COMMUNICATION The GM will be a primary two way conduit for information exchange with members and staff, and must be consistent, positive, and able to engage in this process. S/he must be a true listener who places great importance on personal interactions with all constituencies of CGCC. Having experience in developing communication platform using contemporary media (website, apps, social media etc.) is very desirable. The GM is the primary verbal and written communicator of important information to members and staff, and recognizes that the ability to convey information in an articulate, well-conceived and wellwritten manner is of utmost importance. CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive leadership/management experience in an active, familyoriented, private, member-owned club environment. Strong general management skills with verifiable strengths in team development, financial performance, diverse recreational amenity management (golf, tennis, fitness, aquatics, family activities, etc.), quality food & beverage programming, exceptional member/guest service programming, strategic planning, renovations and project management, and the ability to consistently define and achieve goals and objectives. Proven and verifiable leadership qualities with demonstrated ability to direct, coordinate, and control all facets of a busy, full service country club with 140 full time staff members and a nearly $6M operating/capital budget. Strong prior experience in coordinating and overseeing major club improvement projects, especially as these relate to construction and renovation projects in both the physical plant and on the golf course, similar in size and scope to which CGCC is about to undertake. Possessive of strong organizational skills and an obsession with details necessary to achieve high levels of quality, satisfaction, and outstanding member experiences.
5 A charismatic individual with a sense of humor and style that is commensurate with the culture and expectations of a friendly, fun, and supportive membership and team of associates. EDUCATIONAL AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS A Bachelor s Degree from a four-year university or college is highly desirable, preferably in Hospitality Management. In lieu of the degree, substantial private club or hospitality experience may be considered. Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation preferred. SALARY & BENEFITS Salary is open and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The club, along with the typical CMAA benefits, offers an excellent bonus and benefit package.
