1 ERASMUS+ COURSE CATALOGUE SCHOOL OF HUMAN AND LIFE SCIENCES Events, Leisure and Tourism Canterbury Christ Church University is set in an attractive campus close to the centre of Canterbury - a welcoming student oriented city offering a good selection of shops, restaurants, bars and leisure facilities. The University is renowned for academic excellence and a warm welcoming atmosphere and community spirit and as such is a great place to study Events, Leisure and Tourism. Our modules are taught by a team of enthusiastic staff who have a passion for the subjects and who pride themselves on their caring attitude towards students. We place a strong emphasis on teaching both in class and in the field - both locally and abroad. Specialised teaching facilities include well-resourced computer laboratories with excellent technical support. Events, Leisure and Tourism are exciting and relevant disciplines that cover material from across the social sciences. There are a large number of Events, Leisure and Tourism courses across the country, but not all courses are the same. Here at Canterbury Christ Church University, our programmes reflect the diversity and scope of the subjects and you will be introduced to the major changes in the contemporary world and to the diversity of places, cultures and environments. All modules are 10 ECTS (20 CCCU-UK credits) unless otherwise stated. EVENTS MANAGEMENT Level 4 (Year 1) introduces subjects including the event experience, crisis management, tourism management marketing, finance and the cultural impacts of events. To help smooth the transition to study at university, you will also take the module Orientation to Higher Education. This module will guide you through essay writing, referencing, accessing journals and generally help you settle in. Level 5 (Year 2) involves the organisation of events. We are one of the only universities to offer students the chance to stage two events. Events Operational Staging and Vocational Experience Projects allow students to apply their knowledge and practise creativity, while project management and policy underpin the development of organisational skills. A guest speaker programme provides valuable insights into event law, outdoor events, festival programming and crowd control issues. Level 6 (Year 3) focuses on the global industry of events, mega events, such as the Olympics, in addition to key topics such as service management, marketing and heritage and the creative industries. The Vocational Experience module enables students to stage an event for clients such as the prestigious Canterbury Festival. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of the many volunteering opportunities offered by national and local industry partners, for example Race for Life and the Isle of Wight Festival.

Towards this end the programme includes the study of core business management skills, for example, accounting and marketing. To enable students to apply these skills within the specific context of sport and leisure management professions, these modules are studied alongside those that explore broader political, social and psychological perspectives on sport and leisure. To ensure that students have the skills required to engage successfully in university level education the programme is supported by modules that specifically develop research skills and provide small group tutorials that are able to respond flexibly to the needs of individual students. Level 5 (Year 2) is designed to build on the foundations established in level four and further develop students analytical skills and critical reasoning. The study of core business skills is expanded to include areas like project management and students are able to focus their studies in line with their interests in

3 sport policy, psychology and sociology. The needs of future employment opportunities are supported through modules including Leisure Operational Studies that equip students with the procedural and operational knowledge required for the management of leisure facilities, while industry experience is obtainable through a vocational experience module that gives students the opportunity to organise work placements. Level 6 (Year 3) students critical analysis skills and ability to synthesise and relate a variety of concepts to practical problems associated with planning and management are further developed. This is facilitated by modules such as Service Management that explore how to develop the operational strategies that are fundamental to successful sport and leisure organisations. In addition to the taught modules, an independent research project forms a core feature of the programme at this level. This is a valuable element of the course as it offers students the opportunity to demonstrate, for their degree and to future employers, the knowledge and research skills that they have developed. 4 TOURISM MANAGEMENT AND TOURISM AND LEISURE STUDIES Level 4 (Year 1) introduces modules such as Introduction to Tourism and Contemporary Issues, which includes topics such as Dark Tourism, Film Tourism, Tourism and Crisis and Sustainability. You are also introduced to management concepts such as Marketing Principles and Practise for Tourism and an Introduction to Financial Accounting. To help smooth the transition to study at university, you will also take the module Orientation to Higher Education. This module will guide you through essay writing, referencing, accessing journals and generally help you settle in. You will also have the option of taking a variety of languages. Level 5 (Year 2) introduces modules such a Managing Tourism Organisations, and our free residential field trip to Malta, where we have excellent links with the University of Malta and a variety of tourism organisations there. These modules offer you the chance to gain a managerial perspective that is unique to the tourism industry and during the Malta experience you see and assess this in practise. Other modules include Vocational Experience, where you can gain credits from any tourism employment you may have. Other modules include Level 6 (Year 3) focuses on critical thinking and analysis. Service Management and Marketing introduce the important topics of Destination Management and Customer Service Strategy. These two modules in particular have directly helped past students gain meaningful employment in the tourism industry across the world. Other modules at Level 6 include, Tourism in the Developing World, Heritage and your own Research Project/Individual Study.
