Our degrees are designed to maximise employment opportunities and to provide access to the best types of jobs in the sector. Hospitality Management is the primary degree title designed for those seeking preparation and future employment in operations management within the hospitality industry. and Hospitality Management provides an opportunity to those who are interested in learning about the general area of tourism but would like to remain focused on securing employment in traditional hospitality areas. International Hospitality Management puts an emphasis on language development for Hospitality graduates seeking employment globally. Our degrees have a set of unique characteristics. Students can be confident that they will be perceived positively because of their learning in relation to modern business practice; students can customise their programmes to develop specialised learning for food and drink and fine dining, cruise hospitality and providing hospitality for events and finally, all hospitality and tourism degrees at the University of Plymouth place an emphasis on research which means that students will be skilled at undertaking investigative projects. Hospitality courses are taught by subject specialist staff and our degree courses are designed to develop and maximise the full potential of students through a variety of teaching methods and learning activities. Hospitality courses also benefit from recently acquired and developed specialist facilities. High quality teaching, informed by staff research, contribute to Hospitality s excellent rating, 23 out of 24, given by the Quality Assurance Agency.

3 Year One The first year introduces students to the various components of hospitality and tourism through key modules. All hospitality programmes include opportunities for skills and knowledge development when operating food and drink sales, service and production areas. In addition subjects include Front Office and Facility Operations, Marketing and Business Techniques and a module that supports graduate skills development. Depending on the programme students can choose to study subjects such as Languages, Cruise Operations,, Food Safety or Conference and Events. In year two students develop their knowledge and skills through a range of core and elective modules. Core topics include: Managing Facilities, Food and Drink Management, Developing Business and and Research Methods. The latter is a key feature of the programme, providing students the skills required to engage in both academic and business research, and creates an excellent base for work placements that involve market research. Optional topics include: Planning, Regional and optional field visit abroad, Conference and Events, Cruise Operations and Passenger Services and Languages. Placement Year Students may undertake an optional paid industrial placement year at this stage of the course. Successful completion leads to an additional Certificate of Industrial Experience. Placements can be taken in the UK or overseas across a wide range of sectors. In recent years over 250 graduates have taken a placement, and the placement option is strongly encouraged for those students without significant industry experience. Major employers such as Cunard, De Vere, HIlton, Marriott and Sodexho have offered placements to students on various Hospitality, or Cruise Management degrees. Year Four In the final year, students further develop their knowledge and critical skills and undertake the honours project, which provides an opportunity for students to pursue a specific interest through a significant researchbased exercise. A range of other core and elective topics informed by staff research interests feature in the final year including: Food Service Systems, Cruise Operations Continuity Planning, Managing Service Quality, Intercultural Communication and Training and Business and Finance Strategy for Hospitality and. Hospitality Management Degrees Career Opportunities High calibre graduates with one of our Hospitality degrees have a significant advantage when entering the industry because they will be prepared both to succeed and to enjoy the benefits of this fast changing and exciting sector. The industry recognises that it is important to attract qualified graduates into Hospitality Management and future graduates can look forward to a predicted increase in opportunities because of events such as the success of London s bid for the Olympic Games, the continued growth of the cruise industry and the global nature of the hospitality industry. Course Features Honours degree students will undertake a final year project which includes first hand data collection and analysis. Pilgrims Café has been developed over the last two years as a specialised training facility with a difference. While it may appear to the customer as a restaurant and kitchen providing great food and drink in a range of formats, it is, in reality, a complex learning laboratory. The facility supports students who are studying food and drink based modules by enabling: customised learning for individuals and groups supported by a team of highly skilled professionals to enhance knowledge and skills related to food and drink opportunities to engage with real life situations that concern the provision and management of food and drink problem solving and research generation of ideas and testing of products and systems The facility is configured as a model of best practice in relation to the provision and sale of food and drink in terms of food safety, responsible management and ethical business practice. Students are expected to develop a broad range of skills that will make them more employable by the end of their course but this special resource will play a significant part in making a difference.
