Important concepts will be reinforced and expanded by our explorations in the laboratory. You will learn about the following areas of microbiology: cell structure viruses microbial growth and growth control innate and adaptive immune system microbial metabolism host-microbe interactions microbial genetics epidemiology identification and classification of prokaryotes antimicrobial drugs Study suggestions Lab Before lecture, look over the part of the BIOL 260 Lecture Outlines that will be covered that day. Read (or at least scan) the corresponding pages in your textbook, the figures and figure legends, and the SUMMARY at the end of the chapter. After lecture, study your lecture notes, then test your understanding by answering the corresponding BIOL 260 Study Questions (at the back of the Lecture Outlines packet). Use the Lecture Outlines and Study Questions to guide you when reading the textbook. Check your learning by doing the REVIEW QUESTIONS at the end of each chapter (answers are in the Instructors Manual on reserve in the SCCC library). Studying with other students is also highly recommended, and tutoring is available. Before lab, read all the information about the scheduled exercises in the BIOL 260 Lab Supplement and in the Lab Manual (Microbiology Experiments by Kleyn & Bicknell). Read and study the procedures and figures. There will be a pre-lab assignment for some of the exercises, due at start of lab. After lab, go over your lab notes and answer the recommended questions in the lab manual (answers are in the Instructor's Manual on reserve in the SCCC library). In general, there are no make-up labs, so it is important not to miss lab. If you have to miss a lab, let your instructor know as soon as possible. Student responsibilities Regular attendance and prompt arrival in lecture and lab is necessary and expected. If late or absent, it is your responsibility to get all missed information from your classmates. Assignments will be accepted late, but one point will be taken off per day, and half credit after one week late. It is your responsibility to keep track of your grades throughout the quarter. When you have a question or concern about your grade, you should come see your instructor as soon as possible.

4 p.4 Quizzes and Exams There will be three non-cumulative exams during the quarter, covering material from the lectures and textbook readings. There will be three lab quizzes, covering material from the lab, lab notes, and lab manual readings. Make-up exams and quizzes are possible, but only if the absence is due to an emergency or illness. In that case, you must notify the instructor of the anticipated absence prior to or on the day of the exam or quiz in order to arrange a make-up. Grading Approximate points for the quarter are as follows: 3 exams (100 pts each) 300 pts 3 lab quizzes (40 pts each) 120 pts ~ 8 Pre-labs (2 pts each) 16 pts 2 article summaries (10 pts each) 20 pts Lab unknown identifications - 2 unknowns (15 pts each) 30 pts TOTAL ~ 486 pts Grades will be based on the percentage of points that are obtained out of the total possible: Score = points earned x 100%. points possible A grades B grades C grades D grades Grade Score Grade Score Grade Score Grade Score < Please come see me any time if you have questions about grading policies, or if you want me to calculate your score. Alternative grades Withdrawl (W). Student must officially request a W before the deadline on Friday of week 8. No Credit (NC). Student did not fulfill the course requirements. Students in good standing may request an NC before the final exam (granted at the instructor's discretion). Incomplete (I). Student did not complete the course requirements. Student must request an I before final exam. Audit (N). Requires official registration. The instructor requires regular attendance in lecture and lab. If the instructor's requirements are not satisfied, a NC will be issued.
