3 PROGRAM OVERVIEW Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) school programs are designed to incorporate and emphasize snow safety and the importance of outdoor recreational activities as part of a healthy balanced lifestyle. We feel that every child should have an opportunity to participate in skiing and snowboarding. To help facilitate this, RCR offers cost effective lift, lesson, and rental packages. This guide will help you organize, plan, and create your school s ski trip with a strong educational component. Skiing and snowboarding fits into the Alberta School Curriculum for Physical Education under the general outcomes of activity, health benefits, cooperation, and daily activity. In addition, our instructional programs are easily linked to wellness, biology, and other science curriculum. Lessons will be focused on personal safety, warm-up and cool down exercises, potential hazards, first aid, and the technical skills of skiing or snowboarding. We look forward to having your school visit Nakiska Ski Area this season. Visit for more details. For booking and inquiries, please contact an RCR Group Sales Coordinator at SNOW (7669) See you soon! 4 NAKISKA SKI AREA INFORMATION Mountain Stats Average Annual Snowfall: 250 cm / 98 in Base Elevation:1479 m / 4851 ft Summit Elevation: 2258 m / 7406 ft Skiable Terrain: 1021 acres Number of Lifts: 6 Number of Trails: 64 Beginner Trails: 16% Intermediate Trails: 70% Expert Trails: 14% Nordic: 40 km of double track set trails from the base of the Nakiska access road starting at Ribbon Creek Hostel. Length of season: December to mid-april Average Winter Temperature: -7 Celsius What s New As Calgary s closest mountain and the 1988 Winter Olympics skiing venue, we are proud to teach and encourage young people in the sport of skiing and snowboarding. We hope that today s new participants will go on to enjoy an active lifestyle involving downhill recreation. Being part of the Olympic legacy has provided Nakiska with many benefits. Our world-class snowmaking system ensures that we have the most consistent ski conditions in the area. Our location, just off the Trans-Canada Highway, makes getting here one of the safest road trips available. With very limited avalanche danger and backcountry hazards, and varied terrain with wide-open runs, Nakiska is an excellent choice for school groups. Nakiska is the closest mountain from Calgary for skiing and snowboarding. Just 83 km (52 miles) from the Calgary city limits, Nakiska is a short 50 minute drive. Head west on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy #1), then south on Highway #40, and you ll be here before you know it. New Tubing Park This winter Nakiska will add a brand new Tube Park to the base area adjacent to Kids World. With two tubing tracks, Nakiska will now offer twice the family fun along with world class skiing and riding. New Carpet Lift As part of the new Tubing Park at the Nakiska Kids World, the resort will receive a new 90m carpet style conveyor lift which will serve both the beginners area and the Tubing Park. Easy Way off Homesteader Continuing with the tradition of safety and to ensure every guest has the best experience possible, Nakiska will be adding a new easier run called the Homesteader Bypass. The new easy way down will avoid the steep pitch on Lower Homesteader giving beginners a more comfortable way to the base area. BBQ Pit & Deck Expansion Last season Nakiska opened the new BBQ pit at the base area, this season the improvements will continue with the expansion of deck space in the BBQ pit and base area to provide more options to stop for a bite and enjoy the view of the mountains! Snowmaking Improvements Nakiska Ski Area is constantly making upgrades and improvements to our snowmaking system to enable us to open the resort each year at end of October/early November one of the earliest resort openings in North America. Addition of 'The Beast' Snowcat The Beast Snowcat Groomer is the most powerful groomer in the industry! It promises to improve ground preparation pre-season by 20% and will provide smoother, softer and more carve-able snow! Recognition for the Big Nak Nakiska was named in the Ski Canada Best of Skiing Awards 2013 edition awards as best of the Big Bun Challenge. You have to see this burger to believe it. Take the Big Nak Challenge this season at Nakiska! 3
5 SCHOOLS TRUST US FOR SAFETY Safety Resorts of the Canadian Rockies makes every effort to ensure our resorts meet the required safety guidelines for extracurricular activities, as outlined by the Canada West Ski Areas Association and school boards. RCR works closely with school boards to ensure a well-defined safety program for skiing and snowboarding activities. We are committed to providing a safe learning environment for skiing and snowboarding. 1) Helmets All students on school sanctioned ski trips are required to wear helmets while participating in an instructional program. RCR provides complimentary helmets as part of the rental package. 2) Trained Staff Our instructors are certified by the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance and the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors. Additional training has been provided to ensure the instructors are familiar with the specific needs of school groups and the safety regulations governing school trips. 3) Lessons School group lessons at all Resorts of the Canadian Rockies facilities include safety and instructional components. Our programs are designed to address the specific skills required to participate in and enjoy a ski or snowboard day in the mountains. During the lessons our instructors are responsible for the supervision of the students. We do encourage teachers and/or chaperones to accompany the group lesson and assist if needed. Did You Know? Resorts of the Canadian Rockies was the recipient of the 2008 Canadian Ski Patrol Skiing Award. Presented by the Canadian Ski Council for extraordinary contributions to safety within the ski community. 4
