2 2 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Buffers and Measurement Tools Introduction These notes will help the user to create buffers around a selected feature or property, query the features contained within the buffer and use the search results to gain a better understanding of the area. The user will also be able to use the measurement tools to measure distance or area. 3 3 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Buffers and Measurement Tools User Notes Buffer a property This example shows how to return spatial information from a layer in the GIS viewer that is within a defined distance of a property/land parcel. 1. Locate the property/area you are interested in using the predictive search. 2. In the results grid, double click on the property you are interested in. That row and the land parcel on the screen should become highlighted. 3. Open the side menu by clicking the toggle button. Change the side menu tab to the legend tools by clicking the legend icon. Set the layer you wish to search as active by clicking on it in the legend. The legend item row should become highlighted.

4 4 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Buffers and Measurement Tools 4. Click the buffer button option. Set the buffer size of the area to be created. 5. The buffer will appear on the map. 6. Make sure the layer you are interested in is highlighted on the Map Legend. 7. Right click the buffer area on map and click the Select Features in Active layer option in the popup menu.

5 5 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Buffers and Measurement Tools 8. The application will perform a search action on the active layer and look for all features that are within or touch the buffer area. All the features located within the buffer will be listed in the search results box at the bottom of the map. 9. You are able to export these results to a file that can be opened in Microsoft Excel using the export option in the toolbar at the top of the results area. 10. To clear the buffer area graphic from the screen, right click and select Delete. Warning there is no undo function for this action. Buffer a feature This example shows how to return spatial information from a layer in the GIS viewer that is within a defined distance of a feature such as a resource consent point from the Resource Consents layer, or a well point from the Wells layer, etc. 1. Locate the feature you are interested in. You can type in a resource consent number into the predictive search. 2. Select the option you are interested in and the search results will open at the bottom of the screen.

6 6 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Buffers and Measurement Tools 3. Select the feature you are interested in by double clicking the record in the result grid. The map will zoom to the location of that feature. The row in the result grid and the shape of the feature will be highlighted in red. You can highlight multiple records in the result grid by holding down the shift key and clicking the addition feature rows in the results grid. 4. Once the features to be buffered are highlighted, click the buffer icon in the toolbar at the top of the results grid to set the buffer. 5. The buffer dialog will be displayed on the map.

Select one of the predefined buffer distances or choose the Custom Distance option and enter a distance value and press the buffer button to generate the buffer area. If more than one feature was selected, each will be buffered individually, the then the buffer shapes of each will be merged where they overlap. 7. Make sure the layer you are interested in is highlighted on the Map Legend. 8. Right click the buffer area on map and click the Select Features in Active layer option in the popup menu.

Buffer a drawn graphic Drawn graphic features can also be buffered and used to select features from a layer. 1. Create a drawn graphic or a graphic buffer using the drawing tools. The Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools guide has details on creating drawn graphic and generating a buffer. 2. Make sure the layer you are interested in is highlighted on the Map Legend.

11 11 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Buffers and Measurement Tools Using the measuring tools The measurement tools available with the standard viewer allow you to make distance and area measurements on the map, and to return the map coordinates from a point on the map. 1. Locate the property/features on the map you wish to measure. 2. Select the measurement tools button from the top toolbar. 3. The measurement tools window will open in the sidebar (the sidebar will open if it is not already open) Measure area tool Measure distance tool Return map coordinates tool 4. To measure distance click on the distance measurement icon and click the map at the point on the where you wish to start measuring. Continue to click the each point along the path being measured. Double click the last point when you have finished what you need to measure. Flags will be placed at each location clicked on the map, and the linear distance is displayed in the measurement result area below the tool buttons. The measurement units can be set by choosing an option from the drop list at the end of the measurement tools. 5. To clear the measurement graphics the measuring distance icon again.

12 12 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Buffers and Measurement Tools 6. To measure an area, click on the area measurement icon and then click the location on the map where the area starts. Click the map at each corner of the shape you wish to measure. Double click when you have finished your shape. The area measurement is displayed in the measurement result area below the tool buttons. The measurement units can be set by choosing an option from the drop list at the end of the measurement tools. 7. To clear the measurement graphic the measuring area icon again. 8. To return the map coordinates of a point from the map, click on the return map coordinates icon and then click the location on the map that you wish to display the coordinates for. A flag will be placed at location clicked on the map and the map coordinates are displayed in the measurement result area below the tool buttons. 9. To clear the measurement graphic the measuring area icon again.
