2 2 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Introduction This document will help the user to add lines, shapes or notes to a map before they print it. This will allow the customer to indicate the site of a proposed well, to show a proposed irrigation area or add a comment regarding an existing feature. This editing is normally done prior to a map being printed. Currently there is no facility to save this information to be used at a later date. 3 3 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools User Notes Adding a drawing graphic 1. Locate the property/area of the map you are interested in. 2. Select the Drawing Tool and the Drawing Tools window will open in the side menu. 3. Select the type of shape you wish to draw, a point, line or geometric shape. Once you have selected a shape, a range of colour and dimension options will display. Pick how you would like your drawing will display on the map. 4. Move the mouse onto the map area you wish to draw on. Depending on the type of shape being draw: Points: Click the location on the map where the drawing should drawing should be placed.
4 4 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Lines and polygons: Start the line/polygon with a single click, move the mouse to where the line ends and double click to finish the drawing. If your line is not straight single click at each bend in the line, double click to finish the drawing. Freehand lines and polygons: Start the line/polygon with a single click and hold the mouse down, move the mouse to where the line ends and release to finish the drawing. Rectangles, circles and ellipses: Click the starting point and hold the mouse down. Drag the shape to the size you wish to draw. Release to finish the drawing.
5 5 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Adding text labels: 1. To add a label or comment to the map or a shape you have created select the text icon. 2. Choose the font, colour and size you would like the text to be in from the symbol settings in the drawing tools window. 3. Select where you would like the text to be by clicking on the map. This will open a window for you to enter the text into. 4. Save the text and it will appear on the map.
6 6 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Changing a drawing s shape and symbol 1. To edit the shape you have drawn i.e. add or move vertices in a shape, right click on the shape and choose Edit Shape from the popup menu. (Note this option is only available for line and polygon features). 2. The drawing shape should become highlighted, with the vertex points and the mid-points of the lines highlighted. To move an existing vertex, move the mouse over the point (the mouse pointer should change to a hand symbol). Click and hold the mouse button down, and drag the point to the new location. Release the mouse button to finish the reshape. To add a new vertex, follow the same process using the mid-point markers. 3. To move a shape, right click on the shape and choose Move from the popup menu. The mouse should change to a hand symbol when moved over the drawn shape. Click and hold the mouse button down and move the drawn shape to its new location. Release the mouse button to finish the move.
7 7 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools 4. To rotate or resize a shape, right click on the shape and choose Rotate/Scale from the popup menu. The extent of the shape should be highlighted in a box. 5. To rotate the shape, move the mouse to the rotate marker at the top-centre of shape, click and hold the mouse button down and drag the shape in the direction to be rotated. 6. To resize the shape, move the mouse to the one of the corner or mid-point bounding markers of the extent of shape, click and hold the mouse button down and drag the shape in the direction to be scaled.
8 8 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools 7. To alter the symbol used to display the shape, right click on the shape and choose Style from the popup menu. A popup dialog with the style settings for the drawn shape should appear. Choose the new symbol from the list and click the update button.
9 9 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Deleting drawn graphics 1. To remove a drawn shape from the map, right click on the shape and choose Delete from the popup menu. The shape will be removed from the display. Warning there is no undo function for removing a shape from the display. 2. At any stage you can delete all the drawings you have created by either clicking on the rubbish bin icon in the Drawing tools. A warning message asking you to confirm that you wish to delete all the graphics should appear. Click OK to proceed.
10 10 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Creating a buffer graphic Users can create a buffer graphic of a fixed distance around any existing drawn shape. To buffer a drawn shape: 1. Use the mouse and right click on the shape you wish to buffer. Choose Buffer from the popup menu. 2. A popup dialog with the buffer settings for the drawn shape should appear. Choose a buffer from the list of predefined options and click the Buffer button. 3. You can choose the Custom Distance option to enter your own buffer distance. 4. The new buffer graphic will appear as a transparent polygon over top of the original drawn shape. From that point on it is treated like any other drawn graphic.
11 11 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Printing a map 1. When you are happy with the map you have prepared and all the features you are interested in are displayed, select the print icon. The print window will open. 2. Choose the page template, the output file type (PDF, image file) and the image quality settings from the pick lists. The MAP ONLY option in the templates list will create a basic image that does not include a legend, title. You can set the map title text and your name in the author title box (this is optional) that should appear on the map. 3. When ready, click the Create Print File but to start the print file generation process. When the printing request has run you will have the option to download the file. Click the download button to save the print file.
12 12 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Getting the measurements of a drawn graphic 1. The area, perimeter, line length, x-y position properties of a drawn shape can be displayed by right clicking the drawn shape and choosing Measurement Properties from the popup menu. 2. The measurement properties will be displayed in a popup window.
13 13 Canterbury Maps Quick Start - Drawing and Printing Tools Notes and Advice When the side menu is open, part of the map display is hidden off screen. When creating a printable map, make sure you close the side menu to make sure that the visible extent is correctly centred. Printed labels may not scale exactly the same way they show on screen. Depending on the screen size the map is displayed on and the printing template chosen, the viewable extent on the output may vary from what is seen in the viewer.
