1 Sophomore Technology: Digital Environment & Graphics Image Editing In this two-term required course, all Art & Design students are introduced to the computer lab along with various peripherals and industry-standard graphics imaging software. The intention of this course is to provide all sophomores with the fundamental basics of operating an imac, external peripherals including: a flatbed scanner, a digital camera, and external drives; operating graphics software including Adobe Photoshop, a pixel-based image editing program; Adobe Illustrator, vector-based drawing program and Microsoft Powerpoint, a slide presentation program. Throughout the course, students will engage in a variety of different exercises and projects designed to explore the potential of each program and its tools, commands, and unique capabilities. Students will acclimate with the computer lab and learn its rules and regulations. Students will learn to navigate in a Mac environment as well how to organize, prepare, and save files. In the first marking period students are introduced to Adobe s core program, Photoshop, and begin to learn the various tools, commands, keyboard shortcuts, palettes, image resolution, and color modes. During the second marking period, as the students become more familiar with the software the class projects will become more extensive and explore importing images through digital cameras, experiment in photo editing and color manipulation, use of royalty-free images and creating a digital collage. When the technology students reach the third marking period, the projects will take a fine art approach by exploring the influences of music while creating digital paintings, importing drawings through a flatbed scanner to discover how to apply color through layers, and explore digital transformations.
