1 UNIT 21: Uses of ICT in industry and society (LEVEL 1) Learning outcomes By completing this unit, candidates will develop knowledge and understanding of the current ways in which society, government and industry use ICT systems. Candidates will be able to identify the impact of ICT upon society and industry. They will also show an understanding of potential future developments in ICT. Candidates will be able to identify the legal implications of the use of ICT. Assessment objectives 1 Investigate the impact of ICT on society 2 Outline the uses of ICT by the Government 3 Outline the uses of ICT in industry Knowledge, understanding and skills Impact of ICT on society working habits: flexible working hours social contacts by lack of contact when working from home less distraction Impact of ICT on society shopping habits: shopping from superstores by internet and delivery ability to buy from all over the world research products find cheapest price notification of order and delivery Uses: providing public with information CCTV car number plate recognition public services (NHS, police, fire and ambulance services, education) Range of ICT devices used: work stations robots CAD/CAM just in time deliveries process control and productivity Use of electronic communications: audio/video conferencing satellite/mobile telephone links OCR Level 1 Nationals in Business and ICT 1
2 Assessment objectives 4 Outline the legislation and legal implications of using ICT 5 Investigate potential future developments in ICT, correctly using computer terminology Knowledge, understanding and skills Legislation: Data Protection Act personal information and usage Computer Misuse Act hacking on-line fraud virus attacks Potential future developments relating to: recognition of individuals banking location of work mobile telephones and services shopping and holidays security of individuals Examples of computer terminology Communication: internet/intranet LAN/WAN modem/isdn/broadband/asdl user identity Remote working: GPRS/mobile telephony video-conferencing Leisure activities: downloading of music/games surfing the internet Assessment This unit is centre assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit, candidates must collate a portfolio of evidence showing that they can meet all the assessment objectives. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by candidates is authentic. An OCR Centre Authentication Form is provided in the Centre Handbook and includes a declaration for assessors to sign. It is a requirement of the QCA Common Criteria for all Qualifications that proof of authentication is received. Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements Candidates should be encouraged to investigate a range of the differing uses of ICT in industry and society that are used by differing end-users. The results of this research can then be used to create the final report. Candidates may be able to find some relevant information on the internet 2 OCR Level 1 Nationals in Business and ICT
3 but it is unlikely that they will gain enough information to assist them fully in the production of the final report. Candidates could present their evidence in a number of different ways. If a written report is to be produced candidates should use a standard report structure. Candidates could use presentation software to support a verbal report. Candidates should then include a copy of the slides and their own speaker notes in their portfolio. Candidates are not required to study the details of legislation, but should understand the implication the legislation has on ICT use. When considering potential future uses of ICT, this should be based on the development or wider use of existing technologies, rather than attempting to suggest new technologies that may be developed. For Assessment Objective 1 candidates will be required to investigate the impact ICT has had on people s working habits and For Assessment Objective 2 candidates will be required to outline the uses of ICT by the Government. The use of examples will strengthen the candidates evidence. For Assessment Objective 3 candidates will be required to outline the range of ICT devices and electronic communications used in industry. The use of examples will strengthen the candidates evidence. For Assessment Objective 4 candidates will be required to outline the legislation and the legal implications of using ICT. The use of examples will strengthen the candidates evidence. For Assessment Objective 5 candidates will be required to investigate potential future developments in ICT. The use of examples will strengthen the candidates evidence. Candidates will need to demonstrate that they can correctly use computer terminology.
