1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WHAT: Up Against The Wall: Posters of Social Protest WHERE: Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) The exhibition will be housed in the L-Gallery WHEN: Thursday, April 15, 2010 Saturday, August 7, 2010 Presentation by Yossi Lemel: 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 13 in the Rubin Center Auditorium at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts Opening Reception: 5 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 15 at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts Up Against the Wall: Posters of Social Protest is an invitational exhibition jointly curated by Rubin Center director Kate Bonansinga and University of Texas at El Paso graphic design faculty Antonio Castro, Clive Cochran, Anne Giangiulio and Albert Wong. This exhibition features twelve graphic designers and one design team, who use posters to engage important contemporary and social issues. The exhibition also raises awareness about the role of graphic design in spreading the ideals of the Mexican Revolution. In the late 19th and early 20th century, Mexican graphic designer Jose Guadalupe Posada addressed the political and social issues of his day using imagery that was accessible to both the literate and illiterate. His work, published in penny broadsides, is widely believed to have increased public support for the ideals that sparked the Mexican Revolution. Building on that history, this exhibition brings an international and contemporary framework to the use of design as social protest. This bold and colorful display of more than 70 posters from a group of

2 internationally recognized graphic designers highlights the power of design to engage people in creative thinking about world problems. Artists participating in Up Against The Wall: Poster of Social Protest include the following internationally acclaimed graphic designers: Fang Chen Seymour Chwast Paul Davis Milton Glaser Brad Holland Yossi Lemel Alejandro Magallanes Mirko Ilić Joe Scorsone / Alice Dreuding Lanny Sommese James Victore Lourdes Zolezzi Luba Lukova Up Against the Wall: Posters of Social Protest will be complemented by Solidarity and Struggle: The Politics of Graphic Design in Mexico During and After the Revolution, which is an exhibition comprised of historical posters from the collection of the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Albuquerque. Up Against the Wall is uniquely suited to travel and will include original wall text in Spanish and English. The exhibition will be accompanied by an exhibition catalog including an essay by Steven Heller (former art director for the New York Times and author of the Visuals column for the New York Times Book Review) and transcribed interviews with each designer. Yossi Lemel, who will give a presentation at the Rubin Center on April 13, is a partner at Lemel-Cohen Creative Advertising Agency in Tel Aviv. He is cocurator of the international traveling exhibition and book Both Sides of Peace: Israeli and Palestinian Political Poster Art (Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh, NC). He has been a design jury member in Moscow, Paris, Venice, Milan, Chicago, Mexico City and been invited as a guest lecturer in Boston, Denver, New Orleans, Istanbul, Stockholm, Athens and Tenerife. Lemel s work has been featured in numerous magazines such as Graphis, Communication Arts, Print, Etapes, Page and Eye. His posters are part of the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Museum of Advertising at the Palace of the Louvre (Paris), The New Collection (Munich), Museum of Art and Industry

3 (Hamburg) and The National Museum (Poznan, Poland). Lemel was awarded the 2002 Korean Poster Biennial Grand Prix, the 1998 Promax Gold Medal in Canada, the 2002 Mexico Poster Biennial Gold Medal and the 2002 Moscow International Biennale of Graphic Design Golden Bee Award. Over the years, he was also awarded the Silver Medal, Critic s Award and Mayor s Prize at the International Biennial of Graphic Design in Brno, Czech Republic. Lemel has been the subject of sixteen solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in Europe, Asia and the United States. He was born in 1957 in Jerusalem and currently resides in Tel Aviv, Israel. This exhibition is sponsored in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and UTEP s Inter-American Jewish Studies Program.

9 The changes are as follows: Traffic between Sunbowl Drive and Dawson Drive will be ONE WAY (Northbound) The south University Avenue entrance to the university will be closed Visitors parking in the Parking Garage will be accessible around the back of the garage. Dawson Road and the P-5 Parking Lot will remain open. Parking for the Rubin Center will be available in the P-5 Parking lot and in the Visitor's Parking area of the Parking Garage.
