General factors It is possible to search for specific articles, specific journal titles or to access articles across a whole range of titles (for example, on a particular subject or by a certain author). When you reach the online page for a particular journal title there will be an indication of which years are available online, and what degree of information is accessible (eg. full text/ abstract / table of contents). Note that in some cases the full text is not available for all years. Most services have the same or similar basic options for searching. These are outlined in section 5 (p 7). 1

Access Route to BLDS E-library Go to from any page on the BLDS website, either click on the E-Library link (underneath Search box on left). or click on the Resources for Research or BLDS Collections links (top right of page), then click on E-Library (left of page you arrive at). 3 3. E-journals via BLDS E-library 3.1. Accessing specific journal titles (and through these, specific articles) Once on E-journals page you can look for titles by browsing through the A-Z list. using the search box type a word or phrase from the title of the journal browsing by (broad) subject of the journal Once you have identified the journal you wish to search, click on one of the links below the journal. 3

4 3.1. Logging in Several of our e-journals, and the Article Search facility (see 3.2, below), are provided by a service called SwetsWise. You may sometimes be asked to login to SwetsWise. If you are logging in using your laptop, or from any machine not connected to the IDS network you may be presented with the SwetsWise login screen (below). Click the link at the top right saying Institution login, then click on Institute of Development Studies, then login using your IDS username and password. If you are logging in using an IDS PC you may be able to login without supplying a username or password. If, however, you are presented with the SwetsWise login screen (below), click the link at the top right saying IP authentication (to login in without needing to supply a username /password) or follow the Institution login procedure (above). Other non-swetswise e-journals may have a similar procedure; generally, use your IDS username and password. 4

5 3.1.1 Journals accessed via Swetswise (as indicated by link on screen) click on the year you want click on table of contents link (on the left) for the issue required - this brings up details of individual articles. click on View full text link to see the article in full. 5

6 3.2. Article Search from SwetsWise: Accessing articles across a range of journal titles (to search by subject or author) Go to the E-library page (as directed in section 2, above). Click on Article search, then again on the link on the Article search page. You will be asked to login; follow the procedure in section 3.1, above. SwetsWise Article Search allows searching of a collection of approx. 130 journals, all relevant to development issues. This is especially useful for subject searching. Options for searching: o basic search (default) o expanded search (more options and generally recommended) Field options (which parts of the record are searched) o all fields is the default and is appropriate for subject searching o alter (using drop down boxes in Expanded search) when searching for a particular author or title. On screen HELP is available by clicking help at top right; check search tips under online article search. Also, see section 5 of this leaflet. 7 4. University of Sussex E-journals When required to login to access any of these use your University of Sussex network user name and password. The Online Resources section of the University Library website consists of the following parts, all of which are linked to from the University of Sussex Library homepage and from the Online Resources page (link on the left of most of the site s pages other than the catalogue display).. Library Search covers the Library s catalogue and (with some exceptions) the electronic resources it has access to journal articles, journal titles, ebooks, etc. It is especially useful for subject searches, as it covers thousands of e-journal articles. Catalogue covers the Library s hard copy stock and most e-books and e-journal titles (use Library Search if you want to include e-journal articles). Online Journals provides comprehensive coverage of electronic journals subscribed to by the University Library. (And therefore includes titles which are not included in journal collections available via Online Resources detailed below). Online Resources A-Z links to e-resources, journal collections and databases. All resources are searchable via their own search interface ( native interface ). Many of these resources can also be searched via Library Search (as detailed below) which means the facility to search a number of resources at the same time. For example, you may find the links to Development Studies, Newspapers and Theses and Dissertations especially useful. 8 5. Search tips Use These will apply in most of the services detailed in this summary but not necessarily all if in doubt check the help pages of the site you re on. Boolean connectors (AND, OR, NOT) to connect terms within your search. Quotation marks to specify a phrase or an exact match - eg "action research", human rights. Asterix (*) for truncation eg school* to find schools or schooling. Question mark (?) as a wildcard eg democrati?ation to find democratisation or democratization (note this one is not as common as other rules above) Brackets for grouping (determining the order in which terms will be combined). Most services allow refining of search results; usually by offering a choice of terms on the left of the results screen. o Most services allow marking and then selecting citations or abstracts (plus links) to download or . o Most services allow downloading of citations to citation manager software such as Endnote. o Article / abstract records may include links to articles which cite the one you re looking at to articles referenced in the one you re looking at to the author s or other contact details If you have any queries please ask library staff or blds@ids.ac.uk BLDS is funded by: Revised Nov
