EXPLORE THE BRITISH LIBRARY: WHAT NON-PRINT ITEMS CAN I VIEW? This document contains information on the different types of non-print items found in Explore the British Library, who can view them and how to view them. Other documentation is available for ordering printed items. How to view non-print items found in the Main catalogue How to view items found in Our website How to view items found in Explore further How to view non-print items found in the Main catalogue If you find a record for a non-print item when you click the I want this tab you will see one or more of these services: View online How to access items from Search for Click Go to view the item online/find information on how to access the item/search for the records from which you can access the content. Note: Many non-print items are available only to registered Readers using the Library s PCs in our Reading Rooms. Guest users, customers registered for our document supply services, and Readers using their own laptop/mobile/device, cannot view these items. If you are a registered Readers using the Library s PCs in our Reading Rooms you can view: Subscribed ejournal, ebooks and databases All digital items Non-print legal deposit journals, articles and books Legal deposit archived websites Audio If you are a guest user, a customer registered for our document supply or a registered Readers using your own laptop/mobile/device, and you try to access these items you will see the No access message: November 2013 Page 1 of 10
If you are a guest user, or a customer registered for our document supply services you can view: A range of digital items Freely available Archived websites Thesis Research Datasets Management and Business Studies Portal content Social Welfare Portal content Freely available ejournals/ebooks and useful websites Online resources available to registered readers Subscribed ejournals, ebooks and databases Subscribed ejournals, ebooks and databases are available only to registered Readers using the Library s PCs in our Reading Rooms owing to licensing reasons. An item may be available from more than one provider: To view all providers use the scroll bar or, click the arrow in the right-hand corner of the tab to open the item in a new browser window: Page 2 of 10
Note: Some items may be available online and in print. The online availability may differ from the availability of the printed item. Digital items Registered Readers can access the following digital items: Newspaper titles digitised as part of the British Newspapers Archive (BNA) Books digitised by Google. All digital items available to guest users Newspaper titles in the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) Access to BNA content is free in the British Library but you must register separately to use BNA content, and you have to log in separately to the archive. When the BNA window opens, DO NOT log in straightaway. Click on the thumbnail of your selected newspaper. You will then be prompted to log in, and when you have done so, you will be returned to your selected newspaper. If you log in straightaway, you will be returned to the BNA homepage, not the link you want and you will have to search again for the item you require. Note: Not all of our newspaper collection has been digitised. Where a title is available in the BNA you may find that not all of our holdings for that title have been digitised. Books digitised by Google 250,000 books from our collections, in English and other European languages dated 1700 to 1870, are being digitised by Google. If you find a record for one of these item whilst using the Library s PCs in our Reading Rooms you will see two links to the item: If you click Go to view the Digital item a new browser window open and the item is seen in the Library s itemviewer. If you click Go to view the Google Book a new browser window open and the item is found in Google Books. Non-print legal deposit journals, articles and books Whilst registered Readers can access non-print legal deposit articles and books directly from the catalogue record, you cannot access non-print legal deposit journals from the journal title-level record. Page 3 of 10
Non-print legal deposit journals are deposited as articles; if you find a non-print legal deposit journal title-level record and click I want this you will see: If you click Go the system should perform a search of the title s (electronic) ISSN and the results found would be the non-print legal deposit article records, from which you can view the content. However a system fault means a search for the print title s ISSN is conducted and the article level records found are for our printed items. To find the non-print legal deposit article records, do a manual search using the (electronic) ISSN, found in the Details tab. Click Go to access the content from non-print legal deposit article and book records and a new window will open; after a little while the non-print legal deposit guidelines are presented: You must accept the guidelines presented to access the content. Page 4 of 10
Note: The Library is monitoring all printing from this content. Infringement of the guidelines may lead to the suspension of your Reader Pass, and legal proceedings by the website owner. When the download is complete (which may take a few seconds the first time you open a session), you will see the item on screen. When you have finished looking at the content, close down the window by clicking on the X in the top right hand of the window. You will be asked to confirm that you want to close down the session; click on Leave page to exit the session and return to Explore the British Library. Note: The legislation stipulates that only one person at a time can view any piece of legal deposit content. You will be advised if someone else is looking at the item you wish to view. Once the other person has finished with the item and closed it down, you will be able to view it. There is no limit on the length of time a reader may consult this material. It is not possible to reserve non-print legal deposit content in advance of your visit to the Library. Legal Deposit Archived websites To distinguish this content from freely available archived websites the brief details include the phrase Available only in our Reading Rooms: The type of content is also clearly labelled in the I want this tab: Once you click to access the content from non-print legal deposit article and book records a new window will open and after a little while the non-print legal deposit guidelines are presented, which you must accept before you can view the content. Page 5 of 10
Note: For an archived website you should use the navigation on the original website to view the content, otherwise you may close down your session accidentally. Some links on the pages you are viewing may not work, as they may be to external sites or pages not captured in the domain crawl. Audio items A small number of audio items have been added to the Library s Jukebox. These items can be accessed directly from the catalogue record, if using a Library PC in our Reading Rooms. The link to the audio content is seen on the right-hand side of the Details tab: If there is no link in the Details tab, the I want this tab has a link to a document explaining how to access the item, click Go to read the document: Online resource available to all Digital items A range of digital items are available, including: Approximately 100,000 nineteenth century books were digitised by Microsoft as part of a project; two options to view the content are presented. Page 6 of 10
250,000 books from our collections, in English and other European languages dated 1700 to 1870, are being digitised by Google. You can view the items in Google Books. Some of the world s oldest surviving volumes of printed music were digitised as part of an Early Music Online project in conjunction with JIC and the Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL). You can view the content in the RHUL repository. 190,000 electronic versions of 100,000 EU Bookshop items, dating back to 1952, in more than 50 languages. PDF and ebook versions are free to download. The Library has digitised some maps and made these available via our Online Gallery. These maps will have an image of the map as an icon and the link to the online map is found in the I want this tab: Some maps records with an image of the map as an icon are not in our Online Gallery and have no link in the I want this tab but you will find a link to the image in the Details tab: Archived websites The Main catalogue includes thousands of records for the Open UK Web Archive, archived and made accessible by permission of the owner. You can view the content on their website. These records are distinguished from those archived websites only available to registered readers: Page 7 of 10
Thesis The Main catalogue includes circa 380,000 records for theses. You can view the content, of circa 138,000 thesis that have previously been digitised, on the Library s EThOS website. Research Datasets The Main catalogue includes circa 700 records for Research Datasets. You can view the content on the provider s website. Management and Business Studies (MBS) Portal content There are two types of content available from the Library s MBS Portal: Taster content Secure content. Taster content can be viewed by all. Secure content can only be viewed if you register/log in to this service. Social Welfare Portal content All of the Library s Social Welfare Portal content is freely available. Freely available ejournals/ebooks and useful websites The Main catalogue includes a couple of hundred records for freely available ejournals/ebooks and useful websites selected by Library staff: How to view items found in Our website In Our website you will find records for: The web pages that make up the Library s website (including our Management and Business Studies Portal content and our Social Welfare content) Reports Images. Click the record s I want this tab and you will see a View online service; click Go to see the content. All of the content in Our website is freely available but some records of content in our Management and Business Studies Portal requires that you register or log in: Page 8 of 10
How to view items found in Explore further Not all items found in Explore further; contain links to the full text but, where they do, most of the time you will find the link to view the online content in the Details tab (on the right-hand side), rather than in I want this: The link to the full text may include a note specifying that access is to subscribed content: If the content is subscribed only registered Readers, using the Library s PCs in our Reading Rooms will be able to view the item. Note that not all subscribed content is flagged as such. The link in the Details tab may be to the record on the publisher s website: The full text may be available from the record on the publisher s website; but the content may be subscribed and only available to registered Readers. Some of the links in the Details tab are to citation databases (e.g. Scopus or Web of Science) and full text may not be available. Page 9 of 10
If you do not find a link in the Details tab you may find one in I want this: However, most of the links in I want this are for subscribed content and only available to registered Readers. If you are a guest user or a Reader using your own laptop/mobile/device, you are more likely to see a No access message: Page 10 of 10
