1 County of Renfrew Web-GIS Tips & Tricks - Measuring & Drawing & Coordinates - Purpose: To create custom mark-ups on the web-map interface, to measure features, and to plot coordinates in the County of Renfrew s Web-GIS. ( MEASURING: 1) Click on Analysis tab. Select Measure Distance or Measure Area within the Measurement Tools section to create a measured markup on the map. Measure Distance: Allows user to view the approximate distance of a line without clicking to place it. Measure Area: Allows user to display the approximate area of a drawn shape while drawing and when finished 2) Click on a starting point on the map. With Measure Distance, as you move the cursor the approximate distance from the starting point will be displayed. With Measure Area, the distance will appear on-screen after the end point has been set. With either tool, the distance will be annotated on-screen at appropriate scale settings. 3) Click at each point where a change in direction is needed. Double-click to end a distance measurement. Following each click, the Measurement Info will be updated to show the Total Distance of all line segments and the distance of the last drawn segment. Quick Tip: Units of Measure for distance/perimeter or area can be changed before, during, or after a measurement is started or completed by choosing preferred units from the drop-down box (Fig 1). 1

As a graphic you can still change the units of measure by choosing your preferred units of measure form the unit drop down box. 5) To erase the measure graphic(s) from the map click Erase Drawing or Clear All Erase Drawing can delete individual measure graphics by clicking on the graphic. Clear All erases all measure graphics on the map. A Clear All Measurements popup box asks you if you want to erase all measurement markups. Click OK to erase all. 2

3 DRAWING: 1. All Drawing Tools appear in the Tasks tab. 2. When any tool is selected, graphic options for that tool will appear at right. Apply appropriate colour, thickness, size, and/or transparency settings before or while using the tools to change appearance. (Note: Text settings must be applied prior to clicking on the map.) 3. Click on the map to place or draw features. EDITING YOUR DRAWING: a) All features can be edited. The shape, size, orientation, or placement of area, line, or point features can be changed. For text, only the placement can be altered. b) Select Edit Drawing then click on the feature to be changed. The feature will display editing handles (see Fig 2). A circle at the mid-point on a line indicates that a new node will be created to add greater detail to the shape. If this is not done, all edits will be lost. 3

4 ERASE YOUR DRAWING: i. You can erase all of your drawings and text or you can select individual graphics to erase. ii. iii. To erase all of your graphics (drawings and text that you have added to the map) click Clear All Drawings. A warning box will pop-up asking you if you would like to continue to erase all map drawings. Press OK to erase your graphics. To erase individual graphics click Erase Drawing and click on the graphic you want to erase. (Note: you cannot undo the erase) COORDINATES: 1) Coordinate tools appear in the Analysis tab 2) You can enter know coordinates onto the map or you can plot coordinates on the map 3) If have a set of coordinates you can enter them to add them to your map. Click on the Enter Coords tool. The Manually Enter Coordinates pop-up box opens up. Select your coordinate system. Enter in your y & y coordinate. Click done. 4

5 4) A call-out text box will appear on your map with your coordinates. 5) Once your coordinates are plotted on the map you are able to change the coordinate system on the fly. Click on the drop down box in the Coordinate System and choose a coordinate system. 6) You can also plot coordinates on the map by using the Plot Coords tool. Click the tool and click a point on the map. A call-out text box will appear on your map with your coordinates. You can also change the coordinate system on the fly (see step 5). Note: There are four different Coordinate System options: i. Our Default (Custom) which is UTM zone 18 Northing & Easting ii. Web Mercator iii. Latitude & Longitude in Decimal Degrees (DD) iv. Latitude & Longitude in Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS) To Clear Coordinates To clear coordinates from your map use the Clear Coords tool. A Clear Coordinates warning pop-up box appears telling you that all plotted coordinates will be erased. Click OK to erase your coordinates. (Note: You cannot delete individual coordinates) 5
