INTRODUCTION Why a Visual Identity System? 1.2 Visual Identity Policy 1.3 Contacts for Advice, Approvals, and Graphics

introduction 1.1 Why a Visual Identity System? Research confirms that a clear and consistent identity helps build and maintain reputation. Regularly used graphic symbols can convey and reinforce the strengths of an institution. This is as true for Rutgers as it is for other leading universities. A strong visual identity can enhance Rutgers ability to recruit outstanding faculty, students, and staff; to engage alumni; and to attract external support. To take advantage of this potential, the university developed a visual identity system that effectively links our locations, schools and colleges, other academic units, and administrative offices with the name Rutgers a strong asset we all proudly share. Every member of the university community plays an important role in bringing this cohesive identity to life and in maintaining its integrity by applying it consistently throughout all university communications, including in print, display, and promotional products, and in web, broadcast, and other electronic formats.

introduction 1.2 Visual Identity Policy This visual identity manual provides specific guidelines and standards to the Rutgers community for the implementation of the Rutgers Visual Identity System in all forms of university communication. The guidelines have been developed by the Department of University Communications and Marketing with extensive advice and consultation from faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The Board of Governors of the university formally approved the visual identity system on December 8, 2006 (see the board resolution on page 11.1), as the next major step in the development of a comprehensive communications program for the university. Since the power of a strong visual identity can only be realized through consistent application over time, it is the university s policy that the official logotype, signatures, and marks as described in these pages are the only sanctioned marks for use across the university system. No other marks or symbols may be used or created to represent the university as a whole or any part thereof. The full policy can be reviewed at policies.rutgers. edu/pdf/section80/ current.pdf.

introduction 1.3 Contacts for Advice, Approvals, and Graphics Faculty and Staff Office of Creative Services, Department of University Communications and Marketing The Office of Creative Services in the Department of University Communications and Marketing is responsible for maintaining the university s visual identity system and is available to respond to inquiries regarding its use, including: Requests to create visual identity graphics Explanation of the contents of this manual Contact Creative Services at identity@ucm.rutgers.edu with questions regarding the visual identity system. Office of Trademark Licensing, Department of University Communications and Marketing ucm.rutgers.edu/trademark The Office of Trademark Licensing in the Department of University Communications and Marketing regulates the use of the university s name and identifying marks, including: Use of the official university seal (as delegated by the Vice President for University Communications and Marketing) Use of university trademarks on merchandise (includes the university name, logos, intercollegiate athletic marks, and spirit mark) by all units Use of university trademarks by student groups Use of university trademarks by nonuniversity entities Contact Trademark Licensing at trademark@ucm. rutgers.edu or or 1951 with questions. Purchasing Stationery Products University Procurement Services has contracted with Dupli Envelope & Graphics to serve as Rutgers preferred vendor for stationery products, including letterhead, envelopes, business cards, mailing labels, and more. Stationery items can be ordered electronically through the RIAS Exchange at rias.rutgers.edu. Legacy UMDNJ units may order stationery items from Dupli Envelope & Graphics through MarketPlace. The Dupli punch-out is listed under Office & Computers, Furniture, Books. For assistance ordering stationery items, contact Maria Homer at ext or mhomer@duplionline.com. Students and Student Groups Students and student groups wishing to order business cards may go to / stationery for instructions. Individual students are not permitted to use the university s marks. Student groups may use the Rutgers Visual Identity System provided they follow the guidelines in this manual used by every other Rutgers unit. For example, the marks require a certain amount of space around them, cannot be altered in any way, and cannot be paired with other graphic elements. Use of the visual identity system, including the Rutgers spirit mark, on commercial goods, promotional giveaways, and specialty items such as T-shirts, hats, and mugs, is permitted for student groups with approval by contacting Trademark Licensing at trademark@ucm.rutgers.edu or or Alumni and Alumni Groups Individual alumni are not permitted to use the university s marks. Alumni groups may use the Rutgers Visual Identity System with the approval of Trademark Licensing, upon recommendation by the Department of Alumni Relations. Contact the director of alumni communications at rualumni@ alumni.rutgers.edu or with questions. Individuals External to the University This manual is intended primarily for use by the Rutgers community. Any individuals, groups, or companies external to the university wishing further information regarding the use of Rutgers marks should contact Trademark Licensing at trademark@ ucm.rutgers.edu or or 1951.

basic elements 2.1 The Rutgers Logotype The Rutgers logotype appears to the left. It is the primary element of the Rutgers Visual Identity System and must appear on all official Rutgers communications. It may not be modified in any way. This Rutgers logotype, appearing alone, is the preferred visual representation for the university. It is available in different electronic formats appropriate to your usage needs at /download-zone. Two types of secondary elements may be added to the Rutgers logotype: RU_LOGOTYPE The Rutgers logotype is a custom-designed graphic and may not be altered in any way. The logotype may be downloaded at /download-zone. 1. A typographic element called a signature: chancellor-level or unit name 2. A graphic element: the Rutgers Shield The Rutgers logotype may not be attached to any typographic or graphic element other than those described on the following pages. As a general rule of thumb, it is always preferable to use the simplest (i.e., highest level) logo representation that will adequately communicate your identity as part of Rutgers.

basic elements 2.2 State University Signature RU_SIG_ST Chancellor-Level Signatures The Logotype with the State University or Chancellor-Level Signature In situations where the logo needs to communicate the university s name more fully, you may use one of the signatures appearing on this page. The visual identity requirement for all Rutgers communica tions is to use the Rutgers logotype as well as the appropriate Rutgers name (i.e., Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; Rutgers University New Brunswick; Rutgers University Newark; Rutgers University Camden; Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences) in text. Several ways to satisfy this requirement include using the Rutgers logotype and the appropriate Rutgers name: 1. in your opening text 2. in a displayed address 3. with the appropriate Rutgers signature RU_SIG_UNB RU_SIG_UCM To download the state signature and chancellorlevel signatures, go to / download-zone. RU_SIG_UNW RU_SIG_RBHS The signature for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) may be used by the RBHS Office of the Chancellor, the offices of the two RBHS provosts, and the schools and programs located in Newark, New Brunswick, Piscataway, Scotch Plains, Somerset, and Stratford when appropriate.

basic elements 2.3 Schools and Colleges The Logotype with a School, College, or Unit Signature The name of major units within Rutgers University, such as colleges, schools, research centers, and large administrative offices, may be added to the Rutgers logotype as a unit signature. In all cases, the correct name of the unit must be used. Research Centers and Specialized Units Major Administrative Offices Major units within the university that contain many subunits (such as schools or large administrative divisions) will need to develop and issue guidelines as to whether their subunits should always use the larger unit signature or whether all or some of their subunits may use subunit signatures. As a general rule, it is preferable for subunits to use the signature of their largest umbrella unit, but this needs to be addressed on an individual basis. For units whose name formally includes a location (for example, University College Camden), the location designation is preceded by a vertical rule unless the vertical rule falls at the end of the line, in which case it is deleted (see the examples at left, second line). In text, such units will continue to use a closed en dash preceding the location identifier in their name, as illustrated in the previous sentence. Students and student groups may maintain their current logos or use the Rutgers Visual Identity System, provided they adhere to the guidelines included in this manual.

basic elements 2.4 The Logotype with a School, College, or Unit Signature Continued School or Unit Signature All units within Rutgers, including schools and colleges, are prohibited from creating unit signatures on their own. All signatures are created by Creative Services and provided to units. Unit Signature Position Specifications School or Unit Starting with a digital Rutgers logotype template (RU_LOGOTYPE) at the standard reference size of 3 inches in width, the unit name typography is Formata BQ Light 20 pt. type on 21.5 pt. leading with +50 tracking. School and college signatures have been created and are available at /downloadzone. General guidelines to determine whether your unit should get a signature are provided on page 2.3. If you need a unit signature created, you may request it at identity@ucm.rutgers.edu. Signatures will only include the full, grammatically correct, formal name of the unit. Sch The vertical reference line is found by drawing a vertical rule from the tip of the U, as shown in the inset at left. The unit name width may not exceed an additional half-width of the Rutgers logotype. If the unit name requires two lines, it is preferable for the second line to be shorter. In creating unit signature files for users, Creative Services considers exceptions to these rules when necessary. Signatures will only include words; no symbols (e.g., #, etc.) are permitted. All identity graphics are created and provided by Creative Services. Contact Creative Services at identity@ucm.rutgers.edu with questions regarding unit signatures.

basic elements 2.5 Clinical Practice Signature This design treatment was created and approved for use by clinical practice units whose primary purpose is to provide patient care. If a clinical entity exists primarily for the purpose of educating and preparing students to deliver health care services or products, that clinical entity should use the approved school signature. For information, contact identity@ucm. rutgers.edu. With the approval of Rutgers Health, clinical practices will begin transitioning to the Rutgers Health clinical signature (see page 2.6).

basic elements 2.6 Rutgers Health Signature Rutgers Health Clinical Signature Rutgers Health Signature On April 6, 2016, the Board of Governors approved the establishment of Rutgers Health, a single brand for all of Rutgers patient care and services, as a multiyear initiative. For this new clinical arm of Rutgers, clinical signatures were developed. All clinical practices should begin transitioning to using the Rutgers Health clinical signatures. This design treatment was created and approved for use by clinical practice units whose primary purpose is to provide patient care. Alternate Rutgers Health Clinical Signature For information in using the Rutgers Health clinical marks and obtaining files, contact identity@ucm. rutgers.edu. Do not attempt to make a signature for your unit. Signatures may only be created and distributed by Creative Services and may not be altered in any way. Rutgers Health Academic Signature

basic elements 2.7 Introducing the Rutgers Shield The Rutgers shield is a fundamental expression of the university s identity. Introduced in celebration of Rutgers 250th anniversary in 2016, the new shield a simplified interpretation of its 1966 Rutgers bicentennial predecessor honors our roots and affirms our values, while providing greater flexibility when used as 21st-century iconography in pageantry, publishing, and promotion. The shield s elements convey where we have been and who we are now. The shield is divided into thirds, representing Rutgers deep connections to New Jersey s three regions north, central, and south and denoting the university s tripartite mission teaching, research, and service. Five symbolic elements both acknowledge our past and signify that as we evolve, we will uphold core values that have been integral to our identity from our earliest days. Sunburst The sunburst conveys illumination light as metaphor for knowledge and it is the motif of our seal and the heart of our motto, Sun of righteousness, shine upon the West also. Our centuries-old seal and motto are both variants on those of Utrecht University, the Netherlands; its motto reads, Sun of righteousness, enlighten us. Our 18thcentury founders took inspiration and support from the Old World as they provided for the education of youth... in the liberal and useful arts and sciences in the New World: America. Crown The crown represents our founding in 1766 as Queen s College, named in honor of Queen Charlotte, wife of Great Britain s King George III who reigned over the American colonies when our charter was signed. Queen Charlotte is an apt early namesake: current scholarship finds she cared deeply for education, and, against convention, ensured that her six daughters were educated as well as her nine sons. Inclusion and equality are Rutgers hallmarks We were founded in 1766 and the date confirms our standing as one of America s nine original colonial colleges. A decade later, as the American Revolution erupted, the college gave itself over to the cause of freedom, as all who were able to bear arms immediately marched to oppose the enemy. Rutgers people today continue to passionately champion just causes. Stars The three stars represent the State of New Jersey, the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Rutgers is devoted to serving our home state as New Jersey s land-grant school and is proud to be The State University of New Jersey. Book The book is a timeless symbol of our enduring commitment to teaching, learning, academic inquiry, and scholarship. Across generations and disciplines, at our core, we create, share, and apply knowledge for the enrichment of individuals and the betterment of the broader society.

basic elements 2.8 The Rutgers Shield The Rutgers shield appears to the left. It may not be modified in any way. The shield is available in different electronic formats appropriate for your use. RU_SHIELD_PMS186 RU_SHIELD_REVWHITE The reverse shield is a custom graphic for use when a white shield is needed. The shield may be used as a stand-alone design element; however, the Rutgers logotype, with or without a signature, must also be included on the piece. The Rutgers shield may not be used in place of the Rutgers logotype. It may also be used in combination with the Rutgers logotype, the state university signature, a chancellor-level signature, or a unit signature. (see page 2.9). For size and clear space requirements refer to page Note: For print projects, when placed on a background, the white fill remains white. It may not be replaced by the background color. 21 basic elements 2.13 Unacceptable Uses 1 2 It is extremely important for brand success that the Rutgers logotype, signatures, and shield be displayed correctly. This includes always using the correct typefaces and the correct relative positioning and size of all elements. The examples on this and the following pages illustrate unacceptable displays. 1. Do not distort any portion of the logotype/ signature Do not crop any portion of the logotype/ signature. 3. Do not tilt the logotype/signature Do not rotate the logotype/signature. (An obvious exception to this guideline would be a vertical street pole banner with Rutgers appearing as the primary element in a vertical position by necessity.) 5. Do not add an outline to the logotype/signature. 6. Do not alter the alignment of any component of the signature. 7. Do not alter the relative size of the logotype and the unit signature. 7 School of Environmental and Biological Sciences

basic elements 2.16 The Official University Seal This is the official university seal. It has very limited use, primarily on official university documents, such as contracts and deeds. It may also be used on commencement related items, such as academic diplomas, program certificates, as well as convocation and diploma covers. All such uses require the prior approval of Trademark Licensing at or or 1951, as delegated by the Vice President for University Communications and Marketing. The official university seal is a stand-alone mark of the university, which may not be combined with the Rutgers logotype.

basic elements 2.17 The Informal University Seal With the introduction of the Rutgers shield, the university s informal seal has been retired. Existing material that uses the informal seal may still be used during this transition time. As you prepare to order new print materials, banners, promotional items, etc., please use the shield or one of the other appropriate university marks in the design. Do not use the informal seal in new communications for any purpose. For assistance, please contact identity@ucm.rutgers.edu.

electronic usage 6.1 Minimum Website Standards Logotype Placement: The Rutgers logotype, with or without a signature, must appear in the top left corner of the live content area on every webpage. Logotype Size and Clear Space: The minimum size of the Rutgers logotype is 120 pixels wide, with a recommended 20-pixels-wide border of clear space. The minimum size of the logotype with signature is 150 pixels wide, with a recommended 28-pixels-wide border of clear space. When the logotype is positioned in a horizontal banner (as shown to the left), the clear space above or below may need to be modified. Rutgers University New Brunswick Homepage Logotype Color: The Rutgers logotype may only appear in white, black, or red. See the electronic color specifications on page 3.1. Copyright in Footer: The full university copyright must appear in the footer of every webpage: Copyright 2016, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution. All rights reserved. Webpage Footer Sample WIDTH = 20 PIXELS WIDTH = 28 PIXELS Blogs, wikis, and faculty pages are considered to be websites and need to conform to these minimum standards. WIDTH = 120 PIXELS Minimum Size and Clear Space Requirements WIDTH = 150 PIXELS

electronic usage 6.2 Web Banner Color Themes Predesigned web banner color themes are available to Rutgers units and faculty in order to apply the minimum identity standards easily. While not mandatory, their use contributes to a cohesive visual appearance for the university as a whole. The web banner color themes include: 1. The Rutgers logotype 2. Your unit s name 3. Background colors: red (#cc0033), black (#000000), or white (#ffffff) These web banners may not be resized or altered in any way unless approved by Creative Services. If you would like to request a custom banner, contact Creative Services at identity@ucm.rutgers.edu. With the introduction of the Rutgers shield, the university s informal seal will be phased out. Future web banners will be created without the seal as a watermark.

electronic usage 6.3 Minimum Ecommunications Standards Ecommunications include designed s, such as enewsletters or broadcast s, which are sometimes referred to as eblasts. Enewsletter Example Enewsletters: These must follow the same minimum identity requirements as websites. The Rutgers logotype must appear, with or without a signature, in the top section of the enewsletter. In addition, the appropriate Rutgers name (i.e., Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; Rutgers University New Brunswick; Rutgers University Newark; Rutgers University Camden; Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences) must appear somewhere in the enewsletter. Placing the appropriate Rutgers name in the footer can fulfill this second requirement. See samples to the left. Enewsletter Footer Example

electronic usage 6.4 Minimum Ecommunications Standards Continued Broadcast s or Eblasts: These one-time, designed s that are sent to a bulk list may be a save the date, an invitation, or an event announcement. At a minimum, a broadcast must include the Rutgers logotype, with or without a signature. In addition, the appropriate Rutgers name (i.e., Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; Rutgers University New Brunswick; Rutgers University Newark; Rutgers University Camden; Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences) must appear somewhere in the designed space. 59 electronic usage 6.5 Electronic App Icon Standards A coordinated design for official Rutgers electronic app icons has been developed. See the examples to the left. Universitywide App Schools and units within Rutgers are encouraged to use the school/unit design, which reserves the top half of the icon for the Rutgers logotype and leaves the lower half for an illustration or typographic treatment of the school s or unit s choice. Location Apps For help developing a school/unit app icon, contact Creative Services at identity@ucm.rutgers.edu. School/Unit Examples The Block R app is reserved for Athletics use only Athletic Apps The alumni icon is reserved for Rutgers University Alumni Association use only Alumni App

electronic usage 6.6 Social Media Recommendations Units within Rutgers are not required to use the Rutgers visual identity graphics on their social media pages as their own images may be used. However, if they are used, the use must conform to the standards in the manual. The shield is reserved for use only on the official university social media pages. Additionally, it is preferable to not use signatures as social media graphics because they do not fit within size constraints. The official Rutgers page on Facebook. Creative Services can help to develop your social media graphic or typeset your unit s name to fit within social media graphics. For more information, contact identity@ucm.rutgers.edu.
