1 The Commons Workshop on Mastering Negotiations Location: Ottawa Early Bird Deadlines: Fall 2016: 10th October 2016 Winter 2017: 13th February 2017 Fall 2017: 9th October 2017 Early Bird Fee: $884 + applicable taxes Regular Fee: $ applicable taxes Thank you for an excellent workshop! The strategies were particularly helpful. Glad I attended. - D. Boswell, Ottawa Satisfactory negotiations don t just happen. Negotiation is concerned with the securing of agreements between two or more interdependent parties. As a craft, it holds cooperation and competition in constant tension, and it can be very difficult to do well. Yet, as a skill, it can be methodically built upon the existing attributes of those that practice it. The purpose of this workshop is to help you understand the theory and process of effective negotiations. While strong analytical skills are typically needed in order to develop optimal solutions to problems that don t require bargaining, in environments in which multiple interests hold sway, good negotiation skills are needed in order for solutions to be designed, accepted and implemented. In such environments, great analysis is of little value if interested parties are unable to win support for preferred courses of actions. To provide you with the opportunity to develop both structural frameworks and practical skills in negotiation, this workshop not only provides a lecture-based learning format, but also includes a substantial amount of hands-on learning. In essence, be prepared to learn, practice, reflect, analyze, and then do it all over again with a new topical emphasis and scenario. Our intention in designing this workshop is to ensure that you: come to acquire a robust understand of the nature of negotiations; gain a broad intellectual understanding of the central concepts in negotiations; develop a toolkit of useful negotiation skills, strategies, and approaches, either premised on or expansive beyond your own bargaining style; develop confidence in the negotiation process as an effective means for resolving conflict or arriving at beneficial arrangements; improve your analytical abilities and your capacity to understand, predict, and influence the behavior of individuals, groups, and organizations in multiple-interest environments; and understand the major ideas that underpin the psychology of bargaining and negotiation, the dynamics of interpersonal and intergroup conflict, and the interactive paths available to resolution.
