7 Follow-up Sun, beach and backpack: Ideas about vacations have changed in the last thirty years. In the 1970s and 1980s, when teenagers finished school, they immediately went on vacation for a year. American and Australian students bought themselves backpacks and then jumped on a plane to Europe. When they arrived in Europe, they bought a special ticket called an Interrail card. This card allowed them to use trains all over Europe at a discount. They stayed in pensions because hotels were too expensive. Often the room in the pension had ten beds and was very cold in winter! Countries such as Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Turkey were very popular. In the summer, American teenagers slept on the beaches at night and had parties. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was very easy and inexpensive to travel, so many teenagers returned home to the U.S. with lots of photographs, lots of memories, and sometimes more money than they had when they left! Today, American teenagers don t want to go backpacking. They prefer to go on package vacations. They prefer to stay in expensive hotels, and they don t want to be away for a long period of time. American teenagers would rather go to Europe, where they can stay in comfortable hotels. They aren t as interested in experiencing a new culture. The British are different. In the 1970s and 1980s, British teenagers didn t travel very much. Most of the time they spent their vacations by the sea in England. In the 1980s and 1990s, they started having short vacations in places like Spain and Italy, but they usually stayed in hotels or caravans. It wasn t until the end of the 1990s that the British started taking their backpacks. Now you can find British backpackers all over Europe and Asia.
