I am very excited for this coming summer and if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you so much and we look forward to seeing you this summer! 5 Learn to Swim Boiler Kids Camp is partnering with the Division of Recreational Sports Learn to Swim program this summer to offer additional swim lessons for parents and children. As a convenience for parents, the staff at Boiler Kids Camp will take children to their lessons and pick them up so they can continue their day at camp without being signed out. There will be three sessions of classes available this summer at a cost of $30 for Purdue affiliates (preschool level) and $40 for non-affiliates (preschool level). All other levels will be at a cost of $45 for Purdue affiliates and $55 for non-affiliates. In order to sign up for these classes and have the staff of Boiler Kids Camp transport the children to the lessons, parents are advised to sign up for the following sessions of camp. These sessions of camp coincide with the learn to swim sessions: Weeks 1 and 2 (June 6 to June 16) Weeks 3 and 4 (June 20 to June 30) Weeks 5 and 6 (July 11 to July 21) Lessons will be offered from 11:00am to 12:00pm and the following group lessons will be available: Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 Children will be missing the second program area of the day at Boiler Kids Camp. For additional information on the Learn to Swim program, please contact Gracie Gould at or gouldm@purdue.edu. Camp Information Camp Hours Boiler Kids Camp operates Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm. Parents may drop their children off from 7:30am 8:30am and may pick up their children between 4:30pm-5:30pm. There is an extended option for before care (6:45am-7:30am). Check-In Boiler Kids Camp advises parents to drop their children off at camp by 8:30am so the camp day may begin promptly. Parents may drop their children off at the northwest entrance of the CoRec (See map at the end of this document for detailed directions). Boiler Kids Camp will have a table awaiting the arrival of the children. Each camper will sign themselves in and a counselor will escort them to their designated group. Late Arrival In the event you need to drop your child off after the normal check-in time, parents will need to bring their children to the Wellness Suite. At this point, a staff member will radio a camp counselor to come and escort your child to join the rest of the campers.

Early Departure If your camper must leave camp prior to 4:30pm, we ask that parents fill out an Early Departure Form on the designated morning so we can arrange for the child to be picked up at the specified time. All pick-ups will occur at the Wellness Suite located inside the CoRec. Check-Out Check-out will be located at the northwest entrance of the CoRec. Parents will need to bring a picture ID with them (driver s license, Purdue ID card, or any other form of identification containing a picture and a name) in order to check their child/children out for the day. Counselors will have a list with all individuals authorized to pick up one s child. If an individual is not on the list or the camp staff has not been informed of any changes, the child will not be released to the individual. If an authorized individual does not have a picture ID with them, they may not sign out the child until an ID is presented (no matter how well we know the individual). Staff The Boiler Kids Camp staff is under the direct supervisor of the Assistant Director of Youth, Family, and Special Event Programming in the Division of Recreational Sports. Counselors are primarily college-aged students who have a great interest in working with children. Each counselor has gone through an extensive background check and all are certified in CPR/AED/First Aid. Policies Accidents and Emergencies In the case of an emergency or accident involving your child, parents will be contacted immediately by one of the camp administrators. All members of the Boiler Kids Camp Staff are certified in CPR (adult, child, and infant), AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), and First Aid. If there is an emergency and you, as the parent, need to reach your child, please contact the camp administrators or call our member services desk at Accidents in the Pool Accidents in the pool can happen. Incidents can include fecal deposits, vomit, etc. Please discuss the importance of getting to the restroom and not going in the pool with your child. If an accident like this were to occur, the pool will need to be evacuated and chemical tests will be conducted to indicate when it is safe for the campers to reenter the water. Campers may be out of the water for a short period of time or a few days depending on the severity of the accident. This process is an inconvenience to other individuals using the pool and can be very expensive to the department. Behavior Expectations The staff at Boiler Kids Camp understands there will be a time when a camper is having a difficult day. We would like to resolve any conflicts in a timely manner and keep your child involved in the activities. On occasion, it may be necessary to give the camper a chance to re-group. If the behavior persists and conflicts cannot be resolved, parents will be notified immediately. Behavior Policy: 1 st Offense: camper will receive a verbal warning from the counselor explaining their inappropriate behavior

2 nd Offense: camper will sit out of an activity for a certain amount of time based on the nature of the behavior (time out card will be given) 3 rd Offense: camper will be removed from the activity and escorted to the administrative staff to discuss their behavior choices. During this time, phone calls to parents discussing appropriate actions will be made. More than 3 offenses: If a child has more than three offenses in one day, parents will be called and asked for their child to be removed from camp for the remainder of the day. Steps in the behavior policy can be skipped and a camper may be sent directly to the office if the incident is severe. The Division of Recreational Sports has the right to terminate a camper s registration (without refund) for any child not abiding by the policies set forth by Boiler Kids Camp. Bullying Boiler Kids Camp takes pride in ensuring the safety and well-being of all their campers, especially when it comes to bullying. Our camp director and administrators do not tolerate any type of bullying at camp (physical or verbal). If a child feels they are being bullied by other children, the situation will be addressed immediately and parents will be notified. We ask that parents help the staff in letting us know if situations are occurring that have not been addressed. Please let your camper know that it is okay to tell the counselors and administrators that someone is bullying them. Although we would like to say that bullying never occurs, it unfortunately does and we need help from everyone to ensure that issues are being addressed and that children feel safe and excited about coming to camp. Communication To ensure proper information is being communicated to all parents, Boiler Kids Camp has developed the following protocol: Weekly s parents/guardians will receive an on a weekly basis discussing information for the following week of camp. These s will indicate drop off locations, special events for the week, and other pertinent information Phone calls in the event a child visits the director s office or there is an injury/issue with a child, parents will be notified of the situation and the proper measures taken Weekly surveys at the end of each week, parents/guardians will receive an with a link to a survey to fill out on how the week went for their child. This information is extremely helpful to the staff in planning future activities Newsletters at the end of each week, camp newsletters will be available, via , giving parents an idea of what their children have done during the course of the week Identification Your child s safety is important to us and is Boiler Kids Camp top priority. All parents, guardians, or friends (approved to pick up children at the end of the camp day) must show a picture ID (includes Driver s License, Purdue ID card, or any other form of ID with a picture and name) in order to pick up a child. This policy is designed with the

safety of the children in mind at all times and no exceptions will be made. Boiler Kids Camp will not release a child to a parent without the proper identification, no matter how well we know the parent or guardian. Illness If your child should become ill while attending camp, parents will be notified immediately by a member of the administrative staff. We do not have a registered nurse on staff and we will ask you to make the decision whether to remove your child from the program for the day. We also ask for your discretion on bringing your child to camp if he/she is ill. Medications If your child is required to take any prescription medication during the camp day, parents need to provide the following information to the Boiler Kids Camp director: Prescription medication in the original container with a prescription label containing the child s full name, dosage, and prescription information Written directions from the parent stating how to administer the medication (parents must sign) All prescription medications will be kept in the camp director s office during the course of the day. For campers, who have inhalers and injectable medications (Epi Pen), these medications will stay with the child in their bags at all times. Pick-Up In the event a child is not picked up by 5:30pm, camp administrators will make every effort to contact parents via the information provided. After 15 minutes of not being able to reach parents, camp administrators will contact Purdue Police to pick up the child. Information will be left with the parent as to where they can pick their child up. Restroom Policy When a child needs to use the restroom they will be escorted by two members of the staff. In all instances, staff members will ask if more than one child needs to use the restroom (they will be taken in groups as opposed to individually). Before children enter the restroom, one staff member will walk through the restroom looking for anything out of the ordinary. The second staff member will wait outside with the children. It is the responsibility of the staff members to ensure all children use the restroom in a timely manner and are behaving themselves. Staff members will wait outside while the children use the restroom. If assistance is needed, one of the staff members may enter the restroom to assist while in view of the second staff member.

Before Camp Checklist ITEMS TO BRING TO CAMP Please make sure all items are labeled with your child s first and last name. Boiler Kids Camp is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Clothing and Shoes Children should come to camp prepared for a full day of activities. Children must wear athletic footwear (tennis shoes) and have appropriate attire for physical activities. For younger campers, parents may want to pack a change of clothes as accidents may occur. Please pack their belongings in a separate bag with their first and last name and grade level on the bag. If children are wearing inappropriate clothing for an activity, parents will be notified and asked to bring a change of clothing. The child may have to sit out of an activity until appropriate clothing is brought. Lunch Lunch is a very important aspect of the day for campers. Campers have the option to either bring their own lunch from home or eat at one of our residence halls. For campers who bring their lunch from home, we ask parents write the camper s first and last name as well as their grade level on their lunch. This will allow the staff to store lunches according to grade level and we will be able to distribute them more efficiently. Refrigeration systems are not available so be cautious of what you pack in your child s lunch. Snacks During the camp day, there will be an opportunity for children to enjoy a small snack provided by the camper s parents/guardians. This snack should be supplements and not a substitute for a healthy breakfast and lunch. Please help the Boiler Kids Camp staff in making sure your child eats a good breakfast, packs a substantial lunch, and has a healthy snack. Snacks will not be provided. Sun Protection With many activities taking place outdoors, your child needs to be protected from the Indiana sun. Boiler Kids Camp recommends sun block (SPF #15 or higher). Sun block should be applied to your child daily and if brought to camp, should be labeled with the child s name and grade level on it. Boiler Kids Camp will not provide sunscreen. Swimsuit/Towel A great way to beat the Indiana heat is to SWIM! Campers need to make sure they bring their swimsuit, towel, and a plastic bag (to hold their wet items) to camp every day. If they forget their items, campers will not be able to swim for the day. Backpack and Water Bottle On the first day of camp, each Boiler Kids Camp camper will be issued a backpack and water bottle. Campers are required to bring their bag and water bottle every day, as it is used for storing their belongings

and for the counselors to identify which group they are in. If a child forgets their water bottle or has lost it, a replacement water bottle will not be issued. *Children will only be issued one bag and one water bottle during the summer* ITEMS NOT PERMITTED AT CAMP We request your child leave all personal items at home. Boiler Kids Camp and the Division of Recreational Sports are not responsible for any lost or stolen items. The following items are not allowed at camp and should be left at home: Cell Phones Handheld Video Games (Nintendo DS, PSP, etc.) ipods or other MP3 players Digital Cameras **Items will be confiscated and given to parents at the end of the camp day**
