The minimum age for joining is 14. Annual membership 15 Session cost 12 (members) 16 (non members) introduction Grafham Water Centre has over 40 years experience of providing high quality tuition in a wide range of adventure sports for all ages and abilities. We strive to inspire all of our customers to try something new, develop existing skills and reach their full potential whilst having fun in the great outdoors! Based on the shore of the UK's finest inland sailing venue, the Centre offers an exciting but safe environment to learn in, highlighted by the stunning natural backdrop of the 80 hectare Grafham Water Nature Reserve. The area is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Whether it's specialised adventure sports tuition, a conference or training venue, a fun family day out or a residential or day experience for a school or youth group, we have it all! We are able to tailor courses, taster sessions or special events especially for you and we can provide personal tuition to fit in with your availability and requirements. You will find all of our programmed activity courses and prices for 2014 listed in this booklet. In addition to the courses listed, you can take any RYA course or module as Personal Tuition (page 9) or we can tailor a session just for you. More information on all our courses and clubs can be found on our website. Sailing Taster 50 (full day) 25 (half day) Never tried sailing before? Choose a taster session where you will learn about personal preparation and balancing and turning the boat through the wind. Our instructors will help you master the basics and get you afloat. Taster sessions are suitable for anyone aged 15 and over. For children below this age, please contact us for information about our RYA Grafham Flyers OnBoard Club. 12 April 11 May 14 June 12 July 2 August 7 September 20 September 12 October RYA Start Sailing Level 1 (adult) 150 (2 days) This beginner course will take you through the basics. You will learn how to rig the boat and turn round safely. RYA Sailing Basic Skills Level 2 (adult) 150 (2 days) An ideal follow up for those who have completed Level 1 or who have some sailing experience. We aim to give you in-depth tuition in sailing the boat effectively round a triangular course and some basic seamanship manoeuvres. By the end of the course you should be well on your way to becoming a competent sailor in good conditions. 5 6 April April May July 6 7 August August August 4 5 October 1 2 November RYA Shore-based Essential Navigation and Seamanship 145 (correspondence) An introduction to navigation and safety awareness, perfect for anyone looking at sailing on inshore waters, considering a flotilla holiday or who plans to do big boat (i.e. non-dinghy) sailing in the future. This course will run on a correspondence basis and cover topics such as charts and publications, buoy age, visual and electronic navigation, anchoring and much more. Please call the Centre for information March April May June July 4 5 August August August September October RYA Sailing Stage 1 (youth) 130 (2 days) This youth beginner course will take you through the basics. You will learn how to rig the boat and turn round safely. Stage 1 and 2 courses can be linked into a combined course over 4 days. RYA qualifications can also be gained through membership of our Youth RYA Grafham Flyers OnBoard Club April May 4 5 August August RYA Sailing Stage 2 (youth) 130 (2 days) An ideal follow up for those who have completed Stage 1 or who have some sailing experience. 4 windsurfing paddlesports Paddlesports Taster 25 (half day) Taster sessions are designed for people who have perhaps never stepped in to a canoe or kayak before. Sessions are suitable for anyone aged 15 years and over. For children below this age, please contact us for information about our Paddlesports Club. 11 May 13 June 26 July 23 August 28 September Grafham Water Centre is the ideal location for windsurfing, with sheltered water close to the shore and wide stretches of open reservoir for the more experienced. In addition to the courses listed, you can take any RYA course or specialist clinic as Personal Tuition (page 9) or we can tailor a session just for you. More information on all our courses and clubs can be found on our website. Windsurfing Taster 50 (full day) 25 (half day) Never tried windsurfing before? Our instructors will keep the technical jargon to a minimum and help you master the basics in a friendly, informal setting. Taster sessions are suitable for anyone aged 15 and over. For children below this age, please contact us for information about our RYA Grafham Flyers OnBoard Club. 4 May 25 May RYA Start Windsurfing (adult) 150 (2 days) You will learn about personal preparation, balancing the board and turning through the wind, with plenty of practical time on the water. Back up sessions on safety, equipment and sailing theory will ensure you get the most from your course April 31 May 1 June 14 June 26 July Youth Windsurfing July 9 10 August 17 August 28 September October Youth RYA Windsurfing qualifications can be achieved by attending the RYA Grafham Flyers T15 Club. Please visit our website or call us for more information. BCU 1 Star (adult) 70 (full day) This course is the ideal way to get into the exciting world of canoeing and kayaking. The course covers basic skills such as paddling forwards and backwards and turning. 24 May 26 July BCU 2 Star (adult) 200 (3 days) Once you ve mastered the art of paddling correctly, the next step to further your skills through the BCU training scheme is the 2 Star course. 25, 31 May and 1 June 13, 19 and 20 July Youth Paddlesports Youth Paddlepower Passport and Paddlepower Discover qualifications can be achieved by attending the Paddlesports Club held at the Centre on Tuesday evenings throughout the season. 5 powerboating Professional powerboat training is very important in the UK and essential abroad. We have a range of planing and displacement boats available for use on the RYA National Powerboating Scheme and we run courses for individuals, instructors and industry. We also offer training via Personal Tuition (page 9) if the dates listed are not convenient for you please call for details. personal tuition RYA Powerboating Level 2 (adult 16+) 250 (2 days) This course will provide you with all your essential boat handling skills. You will cover launching and recovery, boat handling, boat maintenance and emergency procedures following the RYA syllabus. 3 4 May July August September November RYA Safety Boat Course (adult 16+) 250 (2 days) If you plan to use your powerboating skills at local sailing clubs or are following the path as an Outdoor Instructor, then the RYA Safety Boat course is well worth doing. This will teach you all aspects of safety control, including learning to recover all types of craft, from sailing dinghies to canoes. 31 May 1 June October November RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) CEVNI Test (adult 16+) 20 The Level 2 course can be used as a practical session for this test, recognised for inland waterways. Please mention when booking your Level 2 course that you wish to complete the CEVNI test and ask about recommended reading. After successful completion, an additional fee ( 43 at the time of print) is payable to the RYA (free for RYA members). 25 per person per hour Our Personal Tuition options are designed to give you the opportunity to learn new activities or hone existing skills, at a mutually convenient time for both you and the Centre. We appreciate that our course dates and content may not suit everyone, which is why we try to be flexible by offering you Personal Tuition with one of our expert instructors. You can use these sessions as an introduction to any of the sports the Centre offers (sailing, windsurfing, paddlesports, powerboating, climbing, archery, mountain biking) and you can also complete basic qualifications and more advanced sailing, windsurfing or paddlesports modules from the RYA and BCU. In sailing, these could include RYA Level 1,2 or 3, Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing, Sailing with Spinnakers, Start Racing, Performance Sailing or Catamaran Sailing. In windsurfing you could complete RYA Start or Intermediate Windsurfing or clinics in Planing or Non Planing, Carve Gybe, Beach Start, Water Start or Advanced Carving Skills. You can book Personal Tuition individually or as part of a small group. We recommend a minimum session of 3 hours for water and 2 hours for land activities. 6 climbing archery Climbing is going from strength to strength with Climbing Club for adults, Grafham Gibbons for youngsters and a variety of taster sessions, courses, qualifications and personal tuition for every ability of climber. Climbing Taster 25 (half day) An opportunity to try climbing on our indoor climbing wall! Sessions for adults run in the afternoons and for young people in the mornings. The National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme (NICAS) Level 1 is the introductory award. 18 January 29 March NICAS Level 2 (adult) 100 (2 days) The National Indoor Climbing Achievement Scheme (NICAS) Level 2 Top Rope Climbing Award is a more advanced award which promotes good practice in unsupervised climbing and bouldering on an artificial wall April December September January 2015 Learning to Lead 80 (4 x 2 hour sessions) This course is designed as a progressive introduction to lead climbing on indoors walls. Four x 2-hour sessions will use a range of techniques to ensure the core skills in lead climbing (climbing, clipping and belaying) are introduced and developed. Participants must hold a NICAS level 2 qualificationand complete all 4 sessions. 10 May 2 August 11 October 22 November 29 September, 6 October, 13 October and 20 October 19 January 2015 tailor made Multi Activity Youth & Adult Groups Bring a group of young people, friends, family or colleagues to the Centre for a day or weekend. We can personalise any programme of activities to suit your needs and availability. Uniformed Youth Groups We provide the perfect place to bring your Youth Group, whether you want to self-programme or have instructor led activities. We run tailor made Group Activity Camps - ideal for any leader led youth group. Our accommodation is perfect for residential holidays or sleepovers and our grounds can cater for all your camping needs. School Day & Residential Visits We recognise the positive impact that high quality Outdoor Education has on every young person. 7 youth & family Discovery Club 40 (1 day) 75 (2 days) 105 (3 days) 135 (4 days) 165 (5 days) Our multi-activity Discovery Club is for young people aged eight and over who want to try new activities, develop existing skills, meet friends and have fun! Discovery Club runs on selected days during school holidays from 8.30am until 5.30pm. Over 12s have their own Discovery Teen Club same price and dates but with a more advanced programme February 7 11 April April May July 4 8 August August August Family Sailing 60 (half day for family of 4) A chance for Mum, Dad and the children to try a sailing taster session in one of our Whammel boats. Sessions are ½ day, either am or pm. Groups must include at least 1 child under the age of 16. Additional people cost 5 each (each booking must not exceed 8 people in total) 6 April 20 April 1 June 3 August 24 August DofE Gold Residential 360 (5 days) We are delighted to support candidates in achieving their DofE Gold Award by offering an activity based residential experience. This involves spending five days and four nights away from home with like minded people you've never met before. It s a very exciting and fulfilling experience. As part of the experience we are able to offer a National Governing Body award in one of the following activities: sailing, paddlesports or climbing. Which one you choose is up to you! 7 11 April 4 8 August August 29 October 2 November Family Days 20 per person A chance for Mum and Dad to take part in some of our many activities with the younger generation of the family. Family Days are designed for young people aged eight and over. If you have children aged under eight, please contact us before booking. Please bring a packed lunch or picnic with you. 18 April 21 April 26 May 25 August Open Day Why not come and see what we have to offer and try our activities out for just 3 a session? (Under 5s free of charge but with a limited range of activities due to equipment sizes). No need to book, just come along with your family and friends, choose your activities and have a go! 8 instructor training Fast Track Instructor (Water) 3500 (8 weeks) This intensive eight week residential course gives comprehensive multi-activity training at Grafham Water Centre. The course will cover BCU One and Two Star, BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Training, BCU UKCC Level One Coach, RYA Level One, Two and Three Dinghy Sailing, RYA Seamanship Skills, RYA Sailing with Spinnakers, RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA Dinghy Instructor and RYA First Aid qualifications. All training, courses, logbooks, certificates, food and accommodation are included. This course can be combined with the Fast Track Land Based Course. 26 October 19 December Fast Track Instructor (Land) 1975 (4 weeks) This intensive four week residential course give comprehensive multi-activity training at Grafham Water Centre. The course will cover NICAS Level 1 and 2, MT.UK Climbing Wall Award, BSCA Mountain Bike Leader, Archery GB Community Archery Leader and RYA First Aid qualifications. All training, courses, logbooks, certificates, food and accommodation are included. This course can be combined with the Fast Track Water Based Course. 20 January February 2015 RYA Dinghy Instructor 75 pre-assessment (1 day) 300 residential (5 days) This course is an intensive training course that leads to an assessment by an RYA Coach Assessor. The course covers all aspects of the RYA syllabus and will provide excellent training for those wishing to teach sailing. You must be 16 or over and be able to demonstrate sailing ability as detailed in RYA G14 publication. You must also hold a valid 8 hour first aid certificate and RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification. The pre-assessment day can be booked separately or combined with the full course. Other dates may be available, please call for details. 14 December (pre-assessment) December BCU Level 1 Coach 240 (4 days) As a Level 1 Coach you can assist higher level coaches, deliver coaching sessions under their supervision and deliver taster sessions. You are required to be 16 years or over, hold a BCU 2 Star (if opting for a boat based award) and BCU FSRT November and November BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT) 65 (full day) BCU FSRT provides safety awareness and rescue skills to enhance water competence. This is a prerequisite for taking BCU Coach Awards at Level 1 and 2. You must have BCU 2 Star competence to attend this course. 23 November RYA First Aid 75 (full day) This course will give a working knowledge of First Aid to sailors and skippers. It satisfies the requirements of the RYA for Instructor Level First Aid Certificates. 16 March 13 July 9 November 23 January 2015 BSCA Mountain Bike Leader 125 (2 days) A 2 day training and assessment course containing theory and practical sessions. Successful completion will enable the individual to lead off road mountain biking groups in the open country. Applicants must be over 18, competent off roaders and own a mountain bike, helmet, gloves and a repair kit. 9 instructor training special offers MT.UK Climbing Wall Award (CWA) Training 120 (2 days) The CWA covers the supervision and management of activities such as bouldering, the teaching and coaching of basic movement skills and roped climbing (excluding the teaching of leading). 6 7 February 1 2 March September February 2015 MT.UK CWA Assessment 70 (full day) A one day assessment following the training course and a consolidation period. 5 April 16 August 9 November MT.UK Climbing Wall Leading Award (CWLA) 80 (full day) This day long course is for experienced SPA or CWA qualified climbing instructors who wish to teach lead climbing on artificial climbing walls. Candidates must be able to lead climb F6a on sight and take good falls on the lead. The course looks at risk assessment, coaching, teaching strategies and duty of care as well as falling and dynamic belaying. a gift voucher from Grafham Water Centre for any course or personal tuition is the ideal present for any occasion 29 March Archery GB Community Archery Leader Award 265 (2 weekends or 4 days) This four day course includes training and assessment for those who wish to lead introductory archery sessions in controlled environments. 10 general information Booking Visit our website and use our Request a Booking form on our bookings page. We will then contact you to take payment and confirm your place. Or you can call us directly on and we can complete your booking over the phone. The full cost of the course is payable on booking unless alternative arrangements have been made. We accept MasterCard, Visa or debit card. Cheques should be made payable to Cambridgeshire County Council. Cancellations by us Grafham Water Centre reserves the right to cancel if conditions outside our control demand or if course numbers do not reach a viable level. In these circumstances an alternative will be offered or a full refund will be made. Should an alternative be acceptable this would be subject to the same terms and conditions as the original booking. Please note we cannot be responsible for any costs or expenses you may incur as a result of the cancellation. Cost of log books/handbooks Course fees do not include Accommodation (unless otherwise stated) Insurance Specialist footwear Towels Clothing required Lots of warm, old clothing (fleeces are good, jeans are not!) Old trainers or wet shoes that you can get wet and muddy Swimsuit and towel for all watersports courses Warm hat and gloves are essential during winter Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses are essential during summer A waterproof jacket is recommended for all outdoor courses Cancellation by you All cancellations by you must be advised in writing. In case of cancellation more than 28 days before the start of the course, a refund of fees will be made, less 20 or 50% of the fees (whichever is smaller) to cover administration costs. No refunds will be made less than 28 days before the start of a course. We advise all of our customers to take out personal insurance to cover cancellations by you. Transfer of courses may be made at the discretion of the Centre Manager and must be notified in writing at least 28 days prior to commencement of the original course. A charge of 10% of the total will be made to cover administration costs. Fitness Many of our courses are physically demanding and you should ensure that you have an adequate level of fitness. Grafham Water Centre should be informed of any medical problems or an inability to swim. This will not disqualify participation, but allow us to make the correct provision. If you are in doubt please discuss this with your doctor or with Grafham Water Centre beforehand. Indemnity Whilst every effort has been made to ensure accuracy in this publication, Grafham Water Centre can accept no liability whatsoever for any errors, inaccuracies or omissions, or for any matter in any way connected or arising out of the publication of this information. If you are in any doubt please check before making your booking. Insurance Cambridgeshire County Council s insurance covers all legal liabilities of Grafham Water Centre to students but does not cover personal injury or loss when there is no liability on the part of Grafham Water Centre or its employees. In this respect and for cancellations by you, we advise that you take out your own personal insurance. Weather conditions Should the conditions not be suitable for the activity, then the programme may be amended accordingly. At worst the course may be cancelled or postponed. In this case a voucher will be issued for the balance of the course or rescheduled to a mutually convenient time.
