1 PCSC Courses (for ICAP students) CERTIFIED FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING PROFESSIONAL Presentation and Communication Skills Course - 2 NOTE: Course 2 will expand on the fundamentals covered in Course 1 as well as introduce advanced topics and technological tools vital for professionally conducted meetings and presentations Introduction Good information, great ideas or the best proposal only gets you half way. To be a successful professional presenter you need to be able to capture your audience and take them on your journey using effective presentations. Positioning yourself and your ideas in a consistently positive and professional manner enables you to make a professional impression the first time and every time. Raw information is logical but being logical does not capture anyone s attention for too long. Persuasive presentations start with raw information, opinions are added, coloured with imagery, and given personality. The more of the mind you tickle, the more retention and motivation you reap. Course Overview This course is designed to expose students to the advanced aspects of academic and professional communication in order to develop professionals who can effectively apply communication theories and best practices to meet their academic and corporate communication needs. This course is designed with the guidelines and recommendations of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP). Content includes interviewing, leading and participating in meetings and discussions, and presenting to a business or professional audience. Exercises and activities include speaking from prepared texts or notes, as well as extemporaneous speaking. Students will also work in groups to develop, research, organize, and deliver a business presentation to fellow participants and the facilitator. Students will work with a variety of audio/visual aids, including flip charts, computer graphics, and video. This course will enable students to prepare and deliver powerful presentations that will increase their professionalism and effectiveness. Students will learn practical tips and techniques for planning key messages, structuring delivery and creating interesting and entertaining presentations. This is a highly practical course where participants are required to give multiple presentations to the group. This Presentation and Communications Skills Course will equip students with the best methods for delivering their message in a clear and effective manner, while maintaining the audience s interest at all times.

2 Objectives This practical class helps students understand the essentials of the communication process, identify potential communication problems, construct productive approaches to communication, and develop strategies to develop effective communication skills. Students can benefit from this class in their personal and family lives, in their learning, and in their career development. This subject aims to introduce students to the basics of interpersonal and business communication, equipping them to communicate more effectively and with greater awareness and skill in both personal and business environments. It is designed to help students heighten their awareness of the function and value of communication. The subject aims to equip students with the ability to use the communication skills required in meetings, group discussions, interviews, and presentations. On completion of this subject students should be able to: Identify key elements and principles of communication Demonstrate understanding of the communication process Describe their own communication strengths and growth areas Demonstrate ability to prepare and present a short oral presentation Describe and practice key listening skills Prepare a clear and informative piece of written communication Communicate effectively both verbally and non-verbally Apply the requisite academic communication skills in their essay writing and other forms of academic writing Demonstrate understanding of the generic fundamentals of communication Use various computer-mediated communication platforms in their academic and professional work Relate to the interpersonal and organizational dynamics that affect effective communication in organizations. Learning Outcomes Students will be able to: Demonstrate effective individual presentation skills, such as voice projection, eye contact, body and hand control, speaking pace, and managing anxiety about public speaking. Explain basic models of communication theory, particularly as applicable to business and the professions. Apply basic models of small-group communication, particularly as applicable to business and the professions. Demonstrate principles and practices of interviewing. Lead group discussions. Participate in brainstorming sessions, group discussions, and meetings. Conduct formal or informal meetings. Conduct a question-and-answer session. Develop interesting and effective visual aids. Use a variety of visual aids effectively in presentations. Deliver short persuasive presentations, extemporaneously or from notes. Deliver informal business or professional presentations using a flip chart. Deliver formal business or professional presentations using transparencies or computer slides.

The facilitator and other participants will critique each presentation, which giving the student an indication of their strengths and weaknesses.

6 Delivery Skills The importance of eye contact, voice, movement, gestures and body language will be covered in the duration of the course. The students will be coached in each of these areas so they can effectively present in a comfortable dynamic and natural fashion. Visual Aids Visual aids make a presentation informative and persuasive. Students will learn how to integrate visual aids with their presentations to assist with the communication of key ideas, and how to avoid common pitfalls. Communication Exercises Students will practice eye contact exercises, effective movement and gestures, and voice modulation. This leads to enhanced awareness of their physical actions and increases the comfort and confidence level when standing before an audience for a meeting or presentation.
