1 A Ruby Returned - Unit 1 Class 3 1 More Reading The ruby is one of the most precious and beautiful gems in the world. In Sanskrit, the ruby is called Ratnaraj, or king of precious stones. Other precious gems are stones like the diamond, the sapphire and the emerald. The pearl, which is formed in oysters, is also considered precious. Rubies are red in colour and get their name from ruber, the Latin word for red. The most valuable type of ruby is called pigeon s blood. Rubies are found in countries like Myanmar, Thailand and Sri Lanka. The stones from Myanmar are a bright red. The Thai stones are darker and the Sri Lankan stones are lighter. Myanmar s Valley of Rubies is noted for its rare pigeon s blood rubies and blue sapphires. Star rubies, which have a star shape inside the stone, are rare. The colour of a ruby makes it cost less or more. The brightest red, the pigeon blood red, is very expensive. A clear stone is also sold at a high price. Like diamonds, the size and the shape of the stone, or its cut, are also important when buying a ruby. Ruby is the birth-stone of people born in July. It is also the gemstone to mark fifteen or forty years of marriage. Tuesday is considered to be Ruby s day, and summer, its season.
