1 Track & Field Tradition Since its inception, the Kansas track & field program has been the home to many legendary coaches, conference titles and Olympic champions. The program has captured six NCAA Track and Field Championships, 60 league crowns, 62 individual national champions and developed over 300 All-Americans. The program s roots also extend internationally, as Kansas has developed 26 Olympians, nine medalists and four gold medalists. 3 Kansas Relays Entering its 83rd year, the Kansas Relays represents one of the premier track & field events in the United States. The meet is one of the top Relays events held in the U.S., bringing together a collection of high school, collegiate and professional talent for four days every April. Over the years, the Relays has showcased some of the best athletes in the world, including many former Olympians. The Kansas Relays continue to grow with each year, as almost 50,000 track & field fans in the past three years have passed through the gates at Memorial Stadium. 5 Legendary Coaches Bob TImmons ( ) Coach of 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. Three Indoor National. Championship teams (1966, 1969, 1970). Coach of the 1970 Outdoor National Championship team. Karl Schlademan ( ) Coached KU to its first conference championship (men s indoor) and NCAA appearance (men s outdoor) in john Outland Considered the Father of the Kansas Relays in Dr. James Naismith ( ) First track and field coach in school history. Inventor of the game of basketball. 18 gary schwartz ( ) Led the women to a combined eight indoor and outdoor NCAA appearances, the most of any KU coach. Guided the women to tie their best finish ever (second) in the 1992 and 1994 indoor and 1993 outdoor conference championships. brutus hamilton ( ) Coached two outdoor conference championship teams (1930, 1931). Led KU to its first top10 finish at the NCAA Championships. National Hall of Fame Member (Class of 1974). Bill Easton ( ) Won 38 conference crowns between cross country and track and field. Coached 38 All-Americans and 18 National Champions. During his tenure, his teams won 41 consecutive dual meets. National Hall of Fame member (Class of 1975). Teri Anderson ( ) Coached the women s team to its first appearance at the indoor AIAW Championships in 1979, where it finished third, which remains the highest placing in team history.
6 Kansas Hall of Fame The Kansas Hall of Fame, located in the Booth Family Hall of Athletics, was established to formally recognize outstanding individuals and teams in all sports and to preserve the heritage and tradition of the University s athletics program. Track and Field and Cross Country athletes are eligible for the Hall of Fame by becoming an NCAA champion, an Olympian or a World or American record holder. Teams and coaches are eligible by finishing in the top ten at the NCAA Championships. Special admittance also may be granted for bringing national distinction and honor to KU. Currently, the Kansas track and field program has placed 57 athletes, seven coaches and 45 teams in the Kansas Hall of Fame. Most recently, head coach Stanley Redwine and the 2001 and 2002 men s indoor teams were inducted for their backto-back eighth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. 7 Jayhawks in the USATF Hall of Fame No other Division I school can boast more inductees in the National Track and Field Hall of Fame than the University of Kansas. Ten former Jayhawk legends have been enshrined into the Hall of Fame in Washington Heights, N.Y., including former head coach Karl Schlademan, who was inducted in December of KARL SCHLADEMAN ( ) Class of 2007 Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007, Schlademan was the track and field head coach for seven seasons and the head of the cross country program for six. He jump-started the championship history that KU s track and field would soon be known for. In 1922, he led the Jayhawks to their first of 60 conference championships and to their first NCAA appearance. BILLY MILLS ( ) Class of 1976 A gold medalist in the 10,000-meter run in the 1964 Olympics, Billy Mills was inducted into the Hall of Fame in A virtual unknown heading into the race, Mills performance set an Olympic record and marked the first and only time an American has won the event. While at Kansas, Mills was a two-time NCAA cross country All-American, the 1960 Big Eight Conference cross country champion and a member of the 1959 and 1960 NCAA Championship Outdoor track teams. AL OERTER ( ) Class of 1974 An original inductee into the Hall of Fame in 1974, Al Oerter is recognized as one of the greatest discus throwers ever. Oerter broke the world record in the event four times and won the Olympic gold medal in 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968, making he and Carl Lewis the only Americans to win gold in the same event at four different Olympic games. The first man to throw the discus over 200 feet, Oerter was also a two-time NCAA champion in the discus while at Kansas (1957 and 1958). BRUTUS HAMILTON ( ) Class of 1974 Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1974, Hamilton s teams won Big Six Conference outdoor titles in 1930 and 1931 and scored KU s first top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships in After Kansas, he spent 33 years as a coach and administrator at California-Berkeley. 20
8 Jayhawks in the USATF Hall of Fame BILL NIEDER ( ) Class of 2006 Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006, shot put thrower Bill Nieder teamed up with Al Oerter to give KU a dynamic tandem in throwing events in the late 1950s. Nieder was the first collegian to break the 60-foot barrier and was the 1955 NCAA champion. After capturing the silver medal at the 1956 Olympics, Nieder took gold at the 1960 Olympics. He also broke the world record in 1960 with a mammoth toss of 65-7 feet. JIM RYUN ( ) Class of 1980 Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1980, Ryun, a three-time Olympian, broke six world records and claimed five NCAA titles while at Kansas. Ryun was also the first high school runner to complete the mile in under four minutes. He received the NCAA s Silver Anniversary Award in 1994, one of the most prestigious awards given out by the organization. WES SANTEE ( ) Class of 2005 A three-time U.S. Outdoor champion, Santee set the world record in the 1,500 meters in 1956 and set the indoor mile record twice (1954 and 1955). During his career as a Jayhawk, Santee won the NCAA 5,000-meter crown in 1952, the NCAA outdoor mile title in 1953 and the NCAA cross country title in Santee also captured the USA outdoor championships in the 1,500-meter run and mile in 1952, 1953 and BILL EASTON ( ) Class of 1975 Inducted in 1975, Easton s Jayhawks won national titles in cross country (1953) and outdoor track (1959 and 1960). During his 18-year tenure at KU, his teams won 38 conference championships, including a stretch of eight-straight years when Kansas won both indoor and outdoor conference titles. GLENN CUNNINGHAM ( ) Class of 1974 An original Hall of Fame inductee in 1974, Cunningham broke the world record in the mile twice in He captured the silver medal in the 1,500 meters at the 1936 Olympics. He won back-to-back national championships in the mile in Cunningham and former Jayhawk star Wes Santee are honored at the Kansas Relays with the running of the Glen Cunningham and Wes Santee 1,500-meter runs. JIM BAUSCH ( ) Class of 1979 Jim Bausch is often referred to as one of KU s most versatile athletes ever. A 1979 inductee, Jarrin Jim set a world record in the decathlon at the 1932 Olympics. He also earned letters at KU in football and basketball. 21
