FOGLESONG University President West Virginia, 1968 LARRY TEMPLETON Director of Athletics Mississippi State, 1969 Doc Foglesong was born and raised in Mingo County, West Virginia. He s the son of a steam fitter on the railroad and a first-grade teacher. He attended West Virginia University and eventually earned his bachelor s, master s, and doctorate in chemical engineering and married his former English teacher Mary Thrasher Foglesong of Sistersville, West Virginia. Currently, Foglesong is the President of Mississippi State University a land-grant school of over 16,000 students committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service. His vision is for the university to be the most respected land-grant school in the Southeast. He also is President and Executive Director of the Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation, an organization committed to finding, mentoring, and developing young men and women who will be the next generation of leadership across Appalachia. Foglesong has been designated by the President of the United States as the Co-Chairman of the Joint US - Russia Commission on POWs/MIAs. He is also a Director on the Board of Massey Energy and a Director on the Board of the Michel Baker Corp. Foglesong previously was a four-star general in the United States Air Force. He flew fighters, was a senior leader in organizations equivalent to companies ranking 9th, 110th, and 430th on the Fortune 500 List, and worked directly with the most senior national leaders including congressional members, cabinet members, and heads of state. Foglesong received numerous awards for leadership. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, has written more than 60 publications that cover a range of topics, and has an honorary Doctorate of Strategic Intelligence. He likes to run and collect slide rules and blow torches. Mississippi State Director of Athletics, Larry Templeton begins his 21st year at the head of the Bulldog sports program in 2007, and has competed for championships in every sport program. His department has operated in the black while expanding the program and drastically improving its facilities. He is the this longest-tenured AD in MSU history and the longest in the Southeastern Conference with 20 seasons under his belt. In the decade of the 90s virtually every State sport establish a bestever finish. The start of the new millennium has been no different, with MSU sports teams having qualified for postseason play 51 times during the past seven seasons; a school-record 12 did so in MSU s men s and women s athletes recorded the highest combined grade point average during the academic year. The early 1990s expansions and renovations of the Leo Seal M-Club Center, Shira Athletic Complex and the completion of the John H. Bryan Sr. Athletic Administration Building were fueled by Templeton. Permanent seating was implemented at the MSU Soccer Field, along with McCarthy Gymnasium being converted into an indoor tennis facility and expanded seating at Humphrey Coliseum. Additional chairbacks and 18 skyboxes at Dudy Noble Field/Polk-Dement Stadium and an expansion of Scott Field. The Holliman Athletic Center, Palmeiro Center and softball training facility were added in Templeton is married to the former Linda Jo Nichols. Their son, Brian, received his second degree (landscape architecture) at Mississippi State in May A second son, Stephen, received his doctorate from Mississippi State in August 2002, and daugther, Nici, is an attorney in Columbia, S.C. Granddaughters Ella Crace Comer and Addison McSwain Comer reside in Columbia, S.C. Bob Hartley dedicated his life s work to promoting Mississippi State athletics. From his hiring as the school s first sports publicity director in August 1946 to his initial reitrement as Assistant Athletic Director for communications in June 1985, through his later years as an invaluable consultant for the Mississippi State University Department of Athletics, the man we called Hart gave special meaning to the words, loyalty. Mr. Bob s lavors of love with MSU have not gone unrecognized. He has taken his place among college athletics greats as a member of both the university s and the state s sports halls of fame and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame. His willingness to generously give of his talent, time and friendship serves as an inspiration to the countless lives he touched and to those that aspire to follow in his footsteps. In that respect, the Bob Hartley Memorial Fellowship was created by the MSU Department of Athletics to provide graduate assistantship opportunities to young media realtions workers. Jay Middleton was selected as the sixth recipient of the Bob Hartley Memorial Fellowship for the academic year. A native of Tupelo, Miss., Middleton earned his bachelor s degree in communication. He served as a student assistant in the MSU athletic media relations for 5 years, in which he served as the primary contact for the men s tennis team and the women s golf team for the past 2 years. 60
