1 BEHIND THE BOTTLE Coca-Cola s Contribution to the British Economy
2 When you buy a bottle of Coca-Cola in Great Britain you may not realise what goes into making it and the benefits it brings to the British economy. We invited eminent economist, Professor Ethan Kapstein, Visiting Fellow, Centre for Global Development (Washington DC) and Associate Partner at Steward Redqueen Consulting, to evaluate how Coca-Cola is making a positive contribution to the economy at large. His research examined the way our British business supports jobs and adds economic value across the country. He also looked at how our long-term strategy to grow our business sustainably supports the nation s manufacturing sector. We hope you'll agree that there's more behind the bottle than you might at first think. 97% of our products are made in GB Great British business Sustainable Local Manufacturing Supporting Jobs across GB Adding Economic value We are a local business with strong regional presence. Our products are made at six sites in this country, from Sidcup in Kent to East Kilbride in Scotland. We are proud to have been making soft drinks in GB for over 100 years with a Made in GB stamp on all our packs. We are committed to growing our business sustainably, investing 52 million into our GB operations in 2014 building on the 200 million investment we have made in the past four years.
3 1 job supports 8 more Coca-Cola employs some 4,000 people in GB in the manufacturing, distribution, sales and marketing of our range of soft drinks. Each job provided by Coca-Cola supports a further eight jobs a total of 34,500 high-quality, skilled British jobs across the economy from suppliers and transport to hospitality and retail workers. This means we help to indirectly grow many businesses, including 8,500 British suppliers (upstream), with whom we spend 800 million on a range of goods and services. 1 = 8 of value being created across GB economy Manufacturing and selling of Coca-Cola products adds 2.4 billion to the British economy annually. Every 1 of value Coca-Cola creates adds an additional 8 of value elsewhere across the GB economy through wages, retail earnings, Government revenues and manufacturing excellence. This positive economic impact is spread over the country and many sectors We are now using 27% less packaging than we did in 2007 We aim to grow more while using less, setting the industry standard in sustainable packaging, including a bold plan to reduce the carbon footprint of the drink in your hand by a third by We are innovating our packaging lightweighting our 500ml Coca-Cola bottles using 27% less packaging than we did in 2007 to reduce our environmental impact, and using 25% recycled plastic in our bottles and 50% recycled aluminium in our cans. As we look to reduce packaging use further, we are removing the cardboard trays from our multipacks and have introduced a smaller closure on our plastic bottles. Our manufacturing plants in Britain send zero waste to landfill. We are also one of the most water-efficient soft drinks businesses in the country.
4 How we add value Wakefield The Real Experience This year our Wakefield soft drinks plant celebrates its 25th anniversary. Employing more than 400 local people, it s Europe s largest and leads the industry in environmental efficiency. We have invested 100 million in the factory in the last five years will also see the opening of a 30 million Automated Storage and Retrieval System warehouse. At 34 metres high, it s been designed to hold and automatically move 30,000 pallets. This new facility doubles the site s storage capacity allowing all manufactured products to be delivered to our customers directly, saving approximately 500,000 road miles per year. In addition, all our plastic bottles and components (over 450 million every year) are manufactured and blown on site. Furthermore having our can providers, Rexam, located conveniently next door means we can process a roll of raw aluminium into an empty can and fill and package it for our customers in just 45 minutes! Continuum Recycling The Continuum Recycling facility in Hemswell, Lincolnshire, is the world s largest plastics reprocessing facility. The pioneering joint venture with ECO Plastics more than doubles the number of bottle-grade recycled plastic (rpet) created in GB. The plant can turn used bottles into new bottles within six weeks and has the capacity to reprocess about 150,000 tonnes of plastic each year. Continuum recycled over half a billion bottles in its first year of operation. This direct investment has more than doubled the total amount of rpet reprocessed in the whole of this country giving a security of supply, but also a significant improvement in this country s waste management infrastructure. Moreover, the plant boosts the rural economy of Lincolnshire, creating jobs and supporting salaries in the region. Continuum s recycling efforts have also led to CO2 savings, equivalent to taking 157,000 cars off the road every year. We are committed to supporting young people and have graduate intake, apprenticeship and training programmes. The Real Experience, our award-winning, industry-leading education programme provides career guidance and insight into the world of manufacturing. We have five dedicated education centres as part of our GB facilities, with a sixth due to open in Staffed by full-time, qualified teachers, the centres host over 20,000 students a year. We also run an annual national enterprise education competition called the Real Business Challenge. Linked to the curriculum, the Real Business Challenge inspires 14 and 15 year old students to tackle a business task set by us. It allows them to experience work-related learning firsthand and to practice skills that will give them a competitive edge in the job market - developing enterprise skills such as problem solving, creative thinking, financial planning, communication, marketing, product design and teamwork. The Challenge has been running since 2005 and this year reached 75,000 students.
