4 The story of UTZ Towards the end of the 20 th century, UTZ Certified was launched under the name Utz Kapeh, which means good coffee in one of the Mayan languages. It was a joint-initiative of a coffee producer in Guatemala and. 5 Coffee beans With UTZ sustainable coffee Founders of UTZ developed the UTZ Certified label along with a farmer from Guatemala. UTZ Certified label This program ensures sustainable agriculture, care for environment and better living and working conditions. From 95% to 100% Over 95% of our coffee is UTZ, Fairtrade and/or organic. The aim is to grow towards 100%. More than a certificate UTZ has already achieved a lot. 7 Packaging Between shelf life and recyclable The less, the better We ve been reducing our packaging for years now: less, thinner, recycled cardboard and no valves. Making things recyclable A large part of the chain is already recycled: the cardboard, paper wrappers and part of the plastic. Further developments What more can we do without compromising the shelf life? We re busy researching the possibilities. Clear to shops and clients What are we doing with aluminium and various plastics? Reducing it and also being transparent about it. 9 The factory in Zaandam Working towards energy neutral Less energy consumption The CO 2 consumption of our factory is determined by gas and electricity: our total emissions are falling. Less waste We produce less waste in total and per kilo of coffee delivered. And what s left is separately processed. Better use of residual heat But still some of that energy is lost as residual heat: making better use of it is the next step. Every little bit helps We ve done a lot already, not even mentioned inland shipping, electric charging points or company bikes. Progress step by step Today, sustainability goes without saying.
