Marina Bay Sands GREEN FACTS Marina Bay Sands is committed to integrating sustainability into the core business strategy. We drive sustainability through our Sands ECO360 Sustainability programme, a global strategy with the objective to continuously improve the stewardship of their business, the environment and the community.
Our Commitment As the first MICE facility in South East Asia to obtain the ISO Sustainable Events Management System certification and the single largest building in Singapore to be conferred the Green Mark Gold Award by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Marina Bay Sands is committed to protecting the environment long-term. Our responsibility to the planet is as important to us as our commitment to the comfort and well-being of our guests.
Our Strategy The Sands Eco360 strategy consists of four pillars: Green Buildings, Environmentally Responsible Operations, Sustainable Meetings and Stakeholder Engagement Environmentally Responsible Operations Green Buildings Sustainability certifications Building renovation and new development New technologies & innovation Resource conservation Waste management and recycling Sustainable products and materials Sustainable Meetings Standard responsible meeting practices High-performance facility Sustainable meeting options Team Member education External communication Community outreach Stakeholder Engagement Our Priorities We have increased our sustainable efforts through Sands Eco360 ; a global sustainability strategy that crosses all of Las Vegas Sands businesses. The program integrates the company s best practices, technologies and methodologies in the area of sustainability across all properties.
Powering an Eco-friendly Building with energy efficiency At the core of Marina Bay Sands green initiatives is a s$25 million Intelligent Building Management System which automates lighting, heating and water supplies for the entire integrated resort to conserve precious resources. Marina Bay Sands reduced energy consumption by over 15,900,000kWh and lowered our carbon footprint by over 9% in 2013 as compared to our baseline in 2012 our first fully operational year Marina Bay Sands uses an Intelligent Building Management System with over 90,000 control points, allowing automated controls over lighting, cooling and water supplies for the entire building. A computerized control system automatically dims or brightens lighting in the public spaces depending on the time of the day and weather conditions. The hotel rooms are equipped with an advanced eco-mode system so that guests can play their part in protecting the environment. An Eco button on the remote control gives guests the option of bringing up the room temperature by a few degrees when the room is empty to save electricity. Marina Bay Sands is connected to a District Cooling System to use energy more efficiently. Our air-conditioning makes use of water-cooled chillers, which are nearly 80 percent more efficient than air-cooled models. Furthermore, heat emitted from the chillers is reclaimed by heat pumps to provide hot water to the hotel and some restaurants to reduce energy consumption. Over 5,500,000kWh per year saved Marina Bay Sands has moved to using energy efficient lighting replacing 41,815 on property lights and saving over 5,500,000kWh per year.
The curtains in our hotel rooms are programmed to close in unoccupied rooms to keep them cooler. The hotel room balcony doors are installed with sensors that automatically turn off the room air-conditioning if the balcony doors are open for an extended period of time. Sands SkyPark is home to over 900 plants and trees? Green roofs, with landscaping on roof decks, are located throughout the development. Sands SkyPark, crowning the three hotel towers, is a 12,400 m 2 green oasis of 250 trees and 650 plants, some up to eight metres tall. In the casino, enthalpy wheels recover cool air in the building exhaust to help pre-cool the incoming fresh air and cut down on energy use. The building s glass façade maximizes the use of abundant natural daylight to illuminate indoor areas, thus displacing the need for energy-intensive lights
with water conservation Marina Bay Sands has been recognised as a Water Efficient Building by the Public Utilities Board in Singapore for our water conservation efforts, including rainwater harvesting and low-flow water taps. Marina Bay Sands installed delayed-action, self-closing taps and constant flow regulators in the bathrooms within the public areas to minimize water usage, reducing water consumption by more than 350 million litres of potable water annually in comparison to conventional fixtures and fittings. Rainwater is collected on the roof of ArtScience Museum in a rain harvesting system and cascades into a pool below. The water collected is recycled in the building s flush water toilet systems. A drip irrigation system is also used to water plants and shrubs, thereby avoiding wasteful spraying or evaporation. Over 350,000,000 litres saved annually Marina Bay Sands saves enough water to supply more than 800 households in Singapore every year?
towards a greener building As one of the biggest properties in Singapore, Marina Bay Sands took special consideration to use green materials during the property s construction phase. More than 2,200 metric tonnes of waste recycled annually Marina Bay Sands has 143 recycling bins around the property and in every hotel room totalling over 2,600 to encourage guests and Team Members to aid in recycling efforts? The company used recycled materials and products; such as drywall partitions and fire-rated doors, under Singapore s Green Labelling Scheme. Non-toxic eco-paints were used to reduce the amount of toxic fumes released into the air. These eco-paints frequently incorporate recycled or leftover paints, which would normally be disposed in landfills. We segmented waste into organic and construction waste for proper disposal, and minimized waste with recycling and reusing of wood, metal and excavated earth.
Green Meetings with sands eco360º As an environmentally responsible venue, Marina Bay Sands provides meeting organisers with a hassle-free sustainable meetings programme to achieve their green meeting goals. Our Green Meeting Concierge is a dedicated service Team Member who will help clients craft sustainable meetings to meet their requirements. The Sands ECO360⁰ Event Impact Statement provides a post-event sustainability report that captures an event s sustainability highlights and provides a comprehensive summary of energy and water consumption at a glance. Our Green Harvest Menu offers sustainable food and beverage options for meeting organisers. The menu is fully locally sourced, and we have worked with our suppliers to make informed choices on ingredients, and to keep our food miles to a minimum. By 2014 we reduced the average carbon footprint of our events by 5% from the 2012 baseline In 2014 we harvested an average of 2,600 grams of fresh herbs from our on site herb garden that were used in restaurants throughout the resort.
Spreading Awareness through education Marina Bay Sands has a company-wide education programme to raise awareness of sustainability and encourage environmentally-friendly behaviour. Launched in February 2012, the programme includes paper reduction challenges, recycling drives, switch off-the-light campaigns and home tips for energy efficient practices. beyond earth hour Marina Bay Sands also participates in Earth Hour, an annual worldwide event organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The campaign encourages consumers from around the world to turn off non-essential lights for one hour. 37 retailers joined Marina Bay Sands in switching off nonessential façade and outdoor lighting during Earth Hour 2014 Marina Bay Sands inspired over 4,000 Team Members. The challenges ranged from reducing energy consumption, food wastage to taking public transport to work. Marina Bay Sands has continued to switch off all non-essential façade lighting on the first Tuesday of every month for one hour, as well as raise air-conditioning by 1 C in our back-ofhouse offices and various public areas. In 2014 over 5,000 Marina Bay Sands team members participated in sustainability engagement events?
Just the Facts marina bay sands fast facts Marina Bay Sands has moved to using energy efficient lighting replacing 41,815 on property lights and saving over 5,500,000kWh per year. Marina Bay Sands has installed 461 water saving taps certified by PUB s Water Efficient Labeling Scheme (WELS). WELS taps yield water savings of more than 6,700m3 per year. Marina Bay Sands uses an Intelligent Building Management System with over 90,000 control points, allowing automated controls over lighting, heating and water supplies for the entire building. A computerized control system automatically dims or brightens lighting depending on the time of the day and weather conditions. The hotel rooms are equipped with an advanced eco-mode system so that guests can play their part in protecting the environment. An Eco button on the remote control gives guests the option of bringing up the room temperature by a few degrees when the room is empty to save electricity. The hotel room balcony doors are installed with sensors that automatically turn off the room's air-conditioning if the balcony doors are open for an extended period of time. Marina Bay Sands installed delayed-action, self-closing taps and constant flow regulators in the bathrooms within the public areas to minimize water usage, reducing water consumption by more than 350 million litres of potable water annually in comparison to conventional fixtures and fittings. The amount of water saved is enough to supply the annual water needs for more than 800 average Singaporean households. In 2014 over 5,000 Marina Bay Sands team members participated in sustainability engagement events Marina Bay Sands will continue to switch off all non-essential façade lighting on the first Tuesday of every month for one hour, as well as raise air-conditioning by 1 C in our back-ofhouse offices and various public areas. awards & certifications
