4 6 Multiply Decimals M5N3.a, M5N3.b, M5N3.c, M5N3.d Getting the Idea When you multiply a decimal by a decimal, the product will have the same number of decimal places as the sum of the decimal places in the factors. EXAMPLE 1 What is ? STRATEGY STEP 1 Use a 10-by-10 grid to multiply. Draw a 10-by-10 grid and shade 0.7 of the columns of squares. STEP 2 Shade 0.4 of the rows of squares. The part that overlaps is the product. There are 28 out of 100 squares, or 0.28, in the overlap. SOLUTION Duplicating any part of this book is prohibited by law. 33

5 When multiplying with decimals, align the digits on the right. It is not necessary to align the digits on the decimal points. EXAMPLE 2 What is ? STRATEGY Multiply as with whole numbers. Multiply. 7 Money amounts are written as decimals to the hundredths place. When solving a money problem that gives you a product in the thousandths, round the decimal to hundredths. EXAMPLE 5 Christina earned $47.50 over the weekend from babysitting jobs. She put 0.3 of her earnings into her savings account. How much did Christina put into savings? STRATEGY STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 SOLUTION Multiply as you would with whole numbers. Place the decimal point in the product. Then round the product to hundredths.
