2 image CAPTURE & PROCESSING Park And Explore started out as a single-row panoramic photograph. I prefer to shoot in a panoramic format when possible because it increases the amount of image data in the file thus providing a larger image with more detail to work with. I also like the wide-screen aspect ratio. I photograph using the RAW format because of its increased bit depth, again, giving me more data to start with. The image remains in a 16 bit ProPhoto color space for as long as possible. 3 RETOUCHING MARK-UP There were a number of objects that became quite distracting once the image was converted to Black & White. My goal was to remove the clutter that prevented a potentially beautiful image from coming through and to provide clues to the viewer that guided their eyes around the image and through the Passage. I use lightening, contrast and sharpening to provide paths for the eye to follow as indicated by the blue arrows and +/- detail marks. I wanted the eye to start on the scooter so the texture that was on the body was smoothed and contrast was increased resulting in a smooth but eye-catching, restful place to start. Light on the wall behind the scooter was modeled so the wall would not appear to be lacking shape. In most cases, I don t like to see shapes with flat tone I prefer them to have some shape through light modeling. Some areas, like the patio in the center bright area, were lacking detail because of the exposure. I decreased the lightness and added additional texture detail to fill in the areas that were over-exposed. The white strip near the center wooden door was removed because it became a hot-spot once the image was converted to B&W that would distract the eye and interrupt its movement along the path I wanted it to follow. It does not look like much at the size you see it here but at the full 30 width, this bright strip becomes relevant. I thought about shooting this pan as an HDR but the woman kept moving around. In the end, I removed her because she was redundant to the table and chairs. I didn t need to show her because the seating suggests that people will sit there and, the image is not about her, its about the passageway that leads to that patio area. The street corner sign on the wall on the right-side of the image, most of the electrical conduit and sidewalk menu were removed because they were producing areas of to high contrast that made the photo appear cluttered.
