3 Skandi Hercules in Subsea Project World First Stuart Wright, MASTER, M/V Skandi Hercules The Skandi Hercules was involved in a world first project for Technip in Q1/2 this year (2013). This technically challenging project involved the replacement of mooring wire inserts on an FPSO in Thailand, while it continued production. The project had been several years in the planning and by the time it was underway it had gathered a lot of interest from all parties. Mobilisation was at Technip s Asia Flex yard in Malaysia and was extensive. The stern structures on the Hercules required strengthening to be able to support an SMCT (Surface Mounted Connection Tool). The vessel had to be capable of supporting loads in excess of 200T in the operation, both vertically and transversely. A 110mm non rotational an Abandon and Recovery (A&R) wire was spooled onto the port tow drum to be used for recovering the chain to the SMCT and also for tensioning the system once the new wire was in place. This required its own equally substantial horizontal sheave next to the SMCT. Mobilization was completed in the first week in April. We sailed to site, after clearing into Thailand at Songkhla and taking on the remaining project and client personnel. A kick-off meeting was held on board the FPSO on field with the various parties; including the hold back tug captains, to ensure everyone was clear on the planned work and ready to go. The plan was to cut one of the moorings subsea using a diamond wire cutter mounted one of the vessel s WROVs and then recover and re-rig the chain end ready to lay down with the A&R during recovery of the old mooring wire from the other side of the SMCT. The cutting went well but when trying to recover the chain with temporary ROV friendly rigging, this rigging was damaged by the SMCT. A new plan had to be made. The solution was evolved on board and relied heavily on the skills of the ROV crews. Instead of making the connection to the turret end chain, as planned, it was buoyed off and the old wire recovered and new one installed. This was fairly straight forward winch work with some manoeuvring over the SMCT to avoid damage to the new, plastic coated wires. These (continued on page 3) The solution was evolved on board and relied heavily on the skills of the ROV crews. 4 World First continued had been loaded onto specially built splitters on the main Anchor Handling drum and could be carefully reeled off one at a time as needed. Once the new wire was connected and laid on the seabed it was buoyed off and we went back to the previously left chain end. The innovation was to make this connection with the A&R wire end subsea. This was accomplished using one ROV to manoeuvre a cleverly rigged conventional 200T shackle body onto the suspended chain and then connect it with the other ROV. As the photos on page 2 show this was a skilled operation by both ROVs and it also removed what had been a risky section of the operation. Once in place, we had a solid connection to the chain end. Once this connection was secure, complete with split pin, we could then remove the buoyancy and rigging and lay the chain back down as we moved back to get the end of the newly installed mooring wire. This was recovered to the SMCT and secured in its port side. With the wire secure on the surface the main pull of the operation began. We heaved in on the A&R wire (port tow drum) and tensioned up the system. This pulled the chain end up into the other side of the SMCT until it too could be locked off. Once in place the now adjoining chain and wire ends could have their permanent H link join inserted. Once this was in place the mooring was ready for lifting off. The lifting up operation was done with the A frame, but tension had to be maintained on the A&R wire until the mooring was clear of the SMCT. With uneven tension on the mooring system the whole join wanted to slide towards the FPSO so it had to be controlled. This entailed many swaps in and out of lifting mode to make small alterations of load on the A&R wire and then once clear, again to slack the A&R wire down. Once the join was lowered to about 30m the ROV could release the A&R wire (now swapped back to an ROV friendly shackle) and the whole mooring could be lowered to the seabed. Completed mooring lifted clear of the SMCT, A&R wire hanging slack while the A frame luffs out. The budgeted time per mooring leg with the original plan was three days but after the improvements devised on board and with some practice we got it down to about one and half days. A great result for Hercules and an enjoyable experience for those involved on board. World firsts are always fun. 6 Organisation Update Mons Aase, CEO, DOF ASA All, I am pleased to announce that Andre Storebø has accepted to take the position as HR Director in DOF ASA/DOF Management AS in addition to his current position as Global Head of HSEQ Department. The main tasks and responsibility for the HR position will be: HR Strategy- and plans for DOF ASA / DOF Management AS; Development of the HR department and improvement of relevant processes; On shore competence and organisation development; Cooperate with dept. heads and advise in HR issues. André will liaise with the other HR Directors / VPs in the DOF Group and have a corporate HR function (marine). In addition to this, André will continue having the corporate HSEQ function and work closely together with the HSEQ VPs in DOF Subsea and DOF Brazil and participate in the continuous improvement process within HSEQ. HSEQ Manager Narve Våge has accepted to take the position as HSEQ Dept. Manager and will have the overall responsibility for the HSEQ Department and processes in DOF Management, including branch offices. Main tasks and responsibilities are listed below: Administrate resources within the department and ensure sufficient support to the organisation/vessels; Responsible for DOF Management s ISM and ISO certifications, etc.; Further development and improvement of DOF s systems within HSEQ; Monitor the effectiveness of the management systems. 7 News from Brazil ROV Completes 1,000 th Dive DOF Brasil On July 16th the ROV XLX38 which is onboard of the RSV Geograph has achieved the milestone of 1000 dives in Brazilian waters no LTI s and no material accidents. As per, Stênio Stein the vessel Offshore Manager, this is a result of a great teamwork and cohesion of the whole team of DOF Brasil! He also emphasized the good synergy with client. DOF congratulates all the offshore team on the vessel!
