1 Region 4 ESL/Bilingual Conference September 26-27, 2014 Saturday Program Expand your knowledge with evidence-based strategies designed for working with English Language Learners (ELLs) and bilingual populations. Today s sessions are framed around relevant topics that directly impact the academic success of diverse populations. Region 4 Education Service Center 7200 Northwest 100 Drive Houston, Texas W. 2 Dr. William Himmele is an Associate Professor and the Coordinator for the ESL Certificate Program at Millersville University in southeastern Pennsylvania. He is a former speech and ESL teacher in New York and Southern California and has served as a teacher trainer and an educational consultant for various school districts and educational projects in the United States, Puerto Rico, Chile, Fiji, Trinidad & Tobago, Korea, China, Nepal, and Thailand. He earned an M.A. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and a Ph.D. in Intercultural Education from Biola University. He is coauthor of the bestselling 2011 book Total Participation Techniques, and of the 2009 ASCD book The Language Rich Classroom and His third book will be coming out in the summer of He is a lifelong Bills and Sabres fan and keeps hoping for a brighter day. Alma Flor Ada Professor Emerita at the University of San Francisco, has devoted her life to advocacy for peace by promoting a pedagogy oriented to personal realization and social justice. A former Radcliffe Scholar at Harvard University and Fulbright Research Scholar she is an internationally re-known speaker. Dr. Ada's professional books for educators include A Magical Encounter: Latino Children s Literature in the Classroom, and Authors in the Classroom: A Transformative Education Process co-authored with F. Isabel Campoy, about their work promoting authorship in students, teachers, and parents. Alma Flor s numerous children s books of poetry, narrative, folklore and non fiction have received prestigious awards; among many: Christopher Medal (The Gold Coin), Pura Belpré Medal (Under the Royal Palms), Once Upon a World (Gathering the Sun), Parents Choice Honor (Dear Peter Rabbit), NCSS and CBC Notable Book (My Name is María Isabel), Marta Salotti Gold Medal (Encaje de piedra). In 2012 she received the Virginia Hamilton Literary Award in recognition of her body of work for children. Dr. Ada is also the author of a book of memoirs, Vivir en dos idiomas, and two novels for adults, En clave de sol and A pesar del amor. She has been awarded the Distinguished Professor Award at the University of San Francisco, the American Education Research Association [AERA] Hispanic Issues Award for Research in Elementary, Secondary and Postsecondary Education; the California Association for Bilingual Education [CABE] Life Long Award; the California Council for Higher Education 2011 Award; the 2012 Literary Award of the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education, and the OHTLI Award from the Mexican Government. Dr. Ada has also established an endowment for the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) to provide scholarships for future teachers. F. Isabel Campoy could be described in her own words as a venturous, adventurous, international, multilingual, multicultural author. She obtained her degree in Philology from University Complutense of Madrid. For her postgraduate work she was a Ford Scholar at Reading University in England, and a Fulbright Scholar at UCLA. She is the author of over 150 titles in Spanish and English, including children s books in the areas of poetry, theatre, stories, biographies, and art, as well as books for educators in the areas of Transformative Education, Second Language Acquisition and Authentic Writing. Her work aims at providing children keys to interpret the world in a fun, challenging, and affirmative way. As a researcher she has also published extensively bringing to the curriculum an awareness of the richness of the Hispanic culture. Her educational specializations are in the area of literacy and home-school interaction, topics on which she lecturers nationally and internationally. CABE (The American Association for Bilingual Education) has established in her name an endowment to provide scholarships for future teachers. Among numerous awards she has been recognized with the Laureate Award from the San Francisco Public Library; the 2005 Reading the World Award from the University of San Francisco, and the ALA Notable Book Award; has been six times a Junior Library Guild Selection, included in Kirkus Best Books, and Nick Jr. Best Book of the Year. She is a Contributing Member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language and member of the American Academy of Poets, as well as several organizations for the advancement of multicultural awareness and world peace. On Friday, the keynote presentations will be provided by Dr. William Himmele, and on Saturday, both Alma Flor Ada and Isabel Campoy will be presenting our keynote.

Beverly Irby and Rafael Lara-Alecio Building a 21st Century Interactive Literacy Classroom 100B How do we meet the national crisis of students who simply cannot read at the appropriate level and who, by the time they reach high school, are dropping, checking, or acting out? In this session, learn how Pearson is using technology to engage struggling readers like no other program can. 100C 100D 100E Ms. Glenda Almonte Using Culturally Relevant Literature to Power Pack K-2 Small Group Instruction In this session K-2 teachers will learn the importance of culturally relevant texts to help accelerate our youngest second language learners. Participants will also learn strategies they can take back to their classrooms to make their small group time power packed. Ms. Meghan Sankowski Intervention Strategies for ELLs with Disabilities Presenters will describe helpful research-based math and reading interventions for ELLs with special needs. Teachers will be able to implement these practices in their classrooms to help students who are in the Response to Intervention (RTI) process. Dr. Corinna Villar-Cole Sheltered Instruction in PK-2 This mini-session will review the eight components of the SIOP Model for prekindergarten and Kindergarten (Echevarria, Short, & Peterson, 2012). Examples of classroom use in primary classrooms will be provided. Dr. Kathy Hogan Examining the Traits of Successful Dual Language Educators As dual language programs (both One-Way and Two-Way) continue to gain popularity and acceptance, bilingual experts are beginning to grapple with the question: What are the qualities and characteristics of an excellent dual language educator? This presentation will explore some of these characteristics that have been identified as necessary for success as a dual language educator. Dr. Higinia Torres-Rimbau Intervention Strategies for ELLs with Disabilities Presenters will describe helpful research-based math and reading interventions for ELLs with special needs. Teachers will be able to implement these practices in their classrooms to help students who are in the Response to Intervention (RTI) process. Hayes Working with Newcomers: Strategies that Work with Recent Immigrants In this presentation, participants will learn how to personalize instruction for recent immigrant children of all ages and backgrounds, and how to incorporate Accelerated Learning methods to achieve maximum results. Ms. Angeles Chavez 11:05-12:00 STAAR-Studded Instructional Strategies In this demonstration the participants will identify and apply learning strategies that support and enhance successful ELL academic performance. The session focuses on differentiated instruction of ELL students by language proficiency level. Instructional strategies will be presented which are researchbased and proven effective for ELL students. The district-wide effort included 400 families of children in Pre-K entering Kinder and Kinder students entering 1st grade in the fall of Ms. Linda Quiroz Workshop 10:00-12:00 Hooking the LEP Learner Through the Use of Brain-Compatible Strategies 206 Brain-compatible strategies "hook" all students including ELLs into the instructional process by making connections, building background, and appealing to various learning styles. Teachers learn how to tap into their own innate creativity to reach ELLs in their classrooms! Ms. Donna Thompson 207 TexQuest: Using Electronic Resources with English Language Learners Attend this session to learn how TexQuest electronic resources from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission can assist you in working with dual language learners, transitioning students from L1 to L2, and providing sheltered instruction. TexQuest resources feature support for as many as 12 different languages, and help you enhance your ESL/Bilingual curriculum by providing an engaging online experience for your students with safe, reliable, and authoritative content for K-12 students. This is a BYOD session. Mr. Len Bryan TexQuest: Using Electronic Resources with English Language Learners Attend this session to learn how TexQuest electronic resources from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission can assist you in working with dual language learners, transitioning students from L1 to L2, and providing sheltered instruction.
