3 COLOURED POLYESTER WEB SLINGS Manufactured in New Zealand from high tenacity treated polyester, offering important advantages over other slings. They are designed to meet the demands of industries that require lifting equipment to be lighter, stronger and safer than before. Our in-house testing and quality control incorporates European technology and international standards to assure superior performance, reliability and safety COLOURED ENDLESS ROUND SLINGS L1 = Length A continuously wound hank of polyester yarn protected by an outer cover, the round sling is used for many types of lifting applications. Direct connection, choker or basket lifts can be made easily. Because load contact points can be changed with every lift, wear is evenly distributed, prolonging the life of the sling. Light and extremely easy to handle, they are ideal for difficult loads where surface damage is a concern. 2

4 PROTECTIVE SLEEVING When lifting steel plate, brass, copper steel coils, stainless steel and glass without damage then some form of protection sleeve should always be used. These are examples of what is available in protective sleeving. WEB LASHINGS For products that are subject to damage or where chain lashings are too harsh, web lashings are an economical alternative. Shackles are available in two types either untested inexpensive commercial grade or tested and certified with stamped safe working load meeting British Standard or US Federal specification. All these shackles are available in either a galvanised or self colour finish, in D s or Bow type. Test certification is available where appropriate. 8 COMMERCIAL SHACKLES These shackles are available hot dipped galvanised and self colour untested and inexpensive. They are not designed to be used in lifting applications. Larger sizes available all sizes up to 3.75T available in galvanised as well as self colour. 14 WIRE ROPE GRIPS Wire rope grips provide a simple and fast cost effective way of making a thimble eye or loop termination. These grips range from commercial grade electro galvanised, heavy duty, hot dipped galvanised or US Federal Specifi cation, or stainless steel grade 304. 19 HEAVY DUTY SNATCH BLOCKS GALVANISED MALLEABLE BLOCKS Where blocks are used in a marine environment they should be galvanised with stainless steel pins or have the capacity to be greased. Listed below is a range of galvanised marine blocks that can meet your requirements. 18

20 SNATCH & OPEN WEDGE BLOCKS There is a wide range of multi-purpose snatch blocks. Over 235 standard models of single and double sheave snatch blocks are offered. Capacities range from 2 through to 30 tons and sheave diameters from 3 to 24 inches. Only top grade materials are used for each component. Most snatch blocks feature convenient side opening right through to the heavy-duty top dead-end models. The side opening feature makes it easy to reeve the block without removing any fittings from the end of the wire rope. 22 OPEN WEDGE SOCKETS Open wedge sockets combine positive attachment with optimum versatility. Easy-to-change Johnson wedge sockets are a high strength cast alloy steel with charpy value of 25 lbs/ft at -4ºF. Each socket accepts at least two different ductile iron wedges. This allows the socket to be used with more than one rope size. Together, wedge and body act as a vice which grips the wire rope and locks it into place. The head attachment pin is standard and has a charpy value of 25 lbs/ft at -4ºF. POLYPROPYLENE LAID ROPE Thin tapes of polypropylene which are then twisted in to yarn, then in to strands and finally in to rope. Polyprop is an inexpensive all purpose rope. Advantages/Characteristics Made from Polypropylene Good abrasion resistance. Impervious to water, petroleum products, dilute acids and alkalais. Value for money (price relative to high strength and light weight). Polypropylene laid rope is treated with UV inhibitor to improve its UV resistance. Uses Many general purposes Ideal for towing and temporary mooring ropes because it floats. Because of the low cost, polypropylene products are sometimes used for anchor warps. However, although normally satisfactory, this practise may be hazardous because of the ropes floating characteristic. It is recommended sinking ropes be used for anchor warps. 21

23 SIZES & BREAKING LOADS NYLON ROPES Nylon is the strongest of the man made fibres in common use. It has excellent shock absorbtion, is not affected by wide variations in temperature, and is very elastic, stretching up to 46% before breaking. Due to its high stretch, however, it is prone to internal stretch abrasion (which is caused as the fibres scissor over one another as the rope extends and contracts) with hard use. Nylon is 1.14 times more dense than water and therefore sinks. Nylon makes an excellent anchor warp and light towing rope. It has other applications where a high strength shock resistant rope is required. Nylon rope has a shiny white appearance and when new, an oily feel. Advantages/Characteristics High elasticity - stretches up to 46% before breaking. Medium abrasion and U.V resistance. (Slightly less resistance than polyester.) Excellent shock absorbtion. Sinks in water. Strongest of all conventional synthetic ropes. Uses Light and heavy tow ropes (possible because of excellent shock absorption). Anchor and mooring ropes (because of high elasticity) Usually identified with a Red or Green marker thread 22

24 SIZES & BREAKING LOADS POLYESTER LAID ROPE Polyester rope is generally considered to be the best all purpose rope as it has a high resistance to abrasion and at normal working loads very little stretch. When new it has a dull white colour and it is 1.38 times more dense than water and therefore sinks. Polyester is ideal for lifting gear and for all other ropes where minimum stretch and a good resistance to abrasion are required. Construction Manufactured with a 3 strand hawser laid construction. Advantages/Characteristics Low stretch. High strength and high breakload. Very high UV and abrasion resistance (superior to nylon) Resistant to most chemicals - both acidic and alkaline. Non-floating. Usually identified with a Blue marker thread Uses General purposes. Heavy towing. Running rigging-yachting sheets and halyards. Anchor warps and mooring lines. 25 SHORT LINK CHAIN For specially rated e.g. Transport, Security or Lifting Chain (Grade 80 or Grade 100) please contact Howard Material Handling and we can provide a quote. Manufactured in Italy to DIN766/A Standard. This particular chain is made to exceed the Grade L (30) specifications. This gives this chain high strength and with excellent galvanising, a long life. Test certificates for vessels going into survey, ABS and the like are available. The only one for your anchor LONG LINK CHAIN Manufactured in Italy to DIN5685/C Standard. This particular chain is made using the same materials and methods as the Grade L short link giving excellent reliability and performance. This gives this chain high strength and combined with excellent galvanising, a long life. The high strength weld, on the smaller sizes, means high break loads. Test Certificates are available. The long link formation gives you lots of metres for your money 24

26 REGULAR LINK CHAIN Manufactured in Italy to DIN5685/A Standard. This particular chain is made using the same materials and methods as the Grade L short link giving excellent reliability and performance. This gives this chain high strength and combined with excellent galvanising, a long life. The high strength weld, on the smaller sizes, means high break loads. Test certificates are available. TRANSPORT CHAIN & COMPONENTS Manufactured in Italy to DIN5685/A Standard. This particular chain is made using the same materials and methods as the Grade L short link giving excellent reliability and performance. This gives this chain high strength and combined with excellent galvanising, a long life. The high strength weld, on the smaller sizes, means high break loads. Test certificates are available. Transport Chain is hardened and tempered which makes it more resistant to wear. It is designed for tiedown and dragging applications.
