Reflections provides motivation for the improvement of their writing skills. Meet the MCLC Learner Of the Month: Thomas Rivers It gives me great pleasure to nominate Thomas Rivers as Learner of the Month. Thomas has been learning at Read Moore Center for about three years. We have worked together since I became a tutor about one and a half years ago. Thomas is everything a tutor could want in a student. He is really interested in learning. He does his homework. He keeps our appointments. As a result, he has made great progress in reading and writing. Thomas particularly likes the short biographies of famous people with worksheets we get from Read Moore Center. We both learn a lot from them, and I learn a lot from tutoring Thomas. I am thankful Thomas is in my life. Henry Vess, Tutor

2 What I Did for the Summer By Thomas This is one of the most unusual summers that I ever seen, but it was a good summer. It worked me very hard. I enjoyed this summer because it was exercise to the body. I did not know what to expect every morning I woke up if it was going to be limbs or the whole tree. I lived through it. I hope it is over. I am glad if it is or oh well! The Peach Festival By Alicia On Saturday, we went to the Peach Festival in Candor. We saw the parade with cars, tractors, and horses. We played games. We ate hot dogs, ice cream, and peaches. It was a beautiful day for my family. A Trip to New York By Santos Hi, I am Santos. I want to talk about the wonderful places I went to visit in New York City. I went to the Bronx and Chinatown. New York is a big city with a lot of buildings and different transportation unlike the cities I m used to. A lot of people don t own cars. They either take the train or the bus. To me, all the streets look the same. That s why it s easy to get lost. But it s easy to find anything you are looking for because there are stores everywhere you turn. I like to visit New York, but I don t want to live there. I like living in a small town. Also, in New York, everything costs too much money and is too noisy because the people work day and night. I feel comfortable in quiet places. Page 2

3 Bessie Coleman By Sharon Bessie Coleman was born in a one-room cabin in Atlanta on January 26, Soon the Coleman family moved to Waxahachie, Texas, where she lived her childhood years. Bessie was the first African-American to earn a pilot s license. On April 27, 1995, a stamp was issued by the United States Postal Service in honor of Bessie Coleman. Bessie Coleman died in a plane crash at the age of 34 on April 29, Durham Bulls Baseball By Jeff I went to a Durham Bull baseball game on a Kirk Tours bus with our neighbors. There were about 48 of us riding on the bus. The bulls beat the team (the Richmond Hen Cocks) that they played 4 to 1 in a lopsided game. After the baseball game was over, the Durham Bulls put on a fantastic fireworks display that lasted for a good thirty minutes. In my mind, the fireworks were the best part of the evening. We arrived home back at Lowe s parking lot at around 1:00 am in the morning. I am Adolfo By Adolfo My name is Adolfo. I work at McDonald s in the morning and Texas Roadhouse at night. I live in Aberdeen and my family lives in Puebla, Mexico. I have four children two daughters and two sons. I like coming to the school because I want to improve in speaking and writing English. 4 Coral Reefs By Beatriz Coral is a colony of marine organisms formed by the association of an algae and polyps. They combine to produce food, feeding the wide variety of organisms that inhabit the reef, as well as the structure or frame for the reef. Associated with corals are a variety of corralling algae, aquatic plants, and animals which together form what we call the coral reef. Coral reefs are very important to maintain life at sea. The coral reef ecosystems are important because they are like marine forests. Forests are like the lungs of the earth, and reefs are the lungs of the sea. They remove and recycle carbon dioxide and protect the land from storms and high waves. Also, the coral reef significantly changes the direction and speed of the currents allowing the establishment of communities associated with the system, like seagrass meadows and mangroves. The coral reef provides a habitat for many marine species. Intruder By Antonia One day in February, I received a phone call from Mexico. While my sister and I were talking on the phone, I went outside. I was looking at the birds eating in the bird feeder. I, also, left some seeds on the ground for the birds to eat. Then, I saw a falcon grab one of the birds. I think it was a Morning Dove; the bird that says, coo, coo. The bird was caught in the claws of the falcon. I threw my phone in that direction, but the falcon had flown away with the bird. I yelled and yelled, and then I thought, Poor bird. Page 4

5 The Long Weekend By Amanda My husband and I went to Charleston, SC. We went for a long weekend. We went to Fort Sumter. We brought home brochures. We got to see history. My daughter called us. The storm broke our air conditioner. I was worried. We had to cut our long weekend short. My husband and I have talked about going back to Charleston. Join us for Reading Rocks!
