3 Page 3 Can information be sent directly into the vehicles? Reducing the need for more physical infrastructure ( road signs ) and the associated installation and maintenance costs? However all information is NOT equal! Can the communication technology used (LTE, DSRC, Wi-Fi): Support the needs of the different types of information? Do we need more than one technology and network? Is the solution a combination of technology and networks? Is it technically & financially feasible? Before any major installation - Will the solution work? Can a business case be built around the stakeholders?

4 Page 4 Technology Choice Project must take into account the technology used in the existing vehicle park. Next generation technology ( DSRC and LTE D ) The project will also research how next generation technologies can enable semi- and autonomous vehicles and investigate how the technologies can work collaboratively Security & Driver Distraction The project will look at what precautions need to be put in place as you increase connectivity to the car To avoid increasing driver distraction the project also studies what messages should be shown where, how and when Future of traffic management The project will use knowledge of vehicle speeds, densities and routes to enable local and national road authorities to manage the road network more efficiently Embedded Modem Receivers Data received directly into car Smartphone Graphic and Audio App on the mobile phone information transfer to car via screen replication technologies Smartphone Audio Transfer App on the mobile phone Information shown on phone audio passed to the car via hands free systems Embedded Safety & Autonomous Communications DSRC & LTE D

5 Page 5 Time Scales 3 Year+ project with stages of test Ongoing liaison with DfT (project lead) to ensure AESIN s continued involvement DfT led feasibility studies underway AESIN & Syndicate are through to 2 nd round of qualification for InnovateUK funding Goal is to start by Mid 2016 Participation The project is shared between AESIN members, Industry Consortium and Highways Authorities The project will develop a pilot environment within the UK which will enable a wider participation

What technologies can address this need? - Bruce Bye, RealVNC When a market is dynamic, technology is changing and there are unmet needs, the opportunity for innovation increases what opportunities are there for UK silicon design companies Chris Turner ARM Page 6
