1 GEORGIA NATIONAL GUARD FAMILY SUPPORT FOUNDATION, INC. Building 21, 935 East Confederate Avenue, S.E., Atlanta, GA (678) or 6420 (phone) (678) (fax) Website: FOUNDATION REPORT JANUARY 31, 2008 The Foundation was able to provide over $325, in emergency relief assistance to hundreds of families during the calendar year This was up from $252, in assistance in Some examples of how we have helped include: We assisted with payments to avoid eviction, foreclosure, utilities disconnection and repossession of vehicles as many applications include job loss. We have helped victims of house and apartment fires, tornados and water damage. We helped with the funeral expenses for the infant daughter of a Guard member. The baby was stillborn and the family had no insurance. We recently helped a young Guard family with basic housing needs because their infant daughter was born prematurely and is on a monitor 24/7 for sleep apnea. The baby forgets to breathe and the mother is the primary care giver. The traditional soldier is a paint contractor and with the hospital stays, as well as caring for an older child, he had not been able to work enough hours to provide for his family. We have provided help to Guard members injured during deployment and training who are experiencing payroll delays because of medical issues and the collection of incapacitation pay. Emergency travel expenses were provided to Guard members deployed to the Southwest Border Mission when called home for serious family emergencies. A single mom, a traditional soldier, lost her job, her unemployment benefits had stopped, her rent was past due, her car insurance had lapsed and her license had expired. Her 4-year old son was in the hospital with a serious case of sickle cell anemia. He was released from the hospital after having his gall bladder and spleen removed and having a port put in his chest. We were able to help her with immediate financial assistance. We provided temporary lodging for the visiting parents of an injured soldier who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. We provided assistance to the parents of a young soldier suffering major medical issues from a car accident. The mother has been with her son since early December 2007 and unable to work causing a loss in family income. He has already had seven operations and remains in a coma. These are some of the issues we see each week. This year our contributions were about $285, We need your help to do more..the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation, Inc. is an independent non-profit educational and charitable foundation (501)(c)(3) which exists for the sole purpose of providing support to members and families of the Georgia National Guard, and other qualified military Active Duty or Reserve members based in Georgia 1
2 CHRISTMAS 2007 With the continued support of corporate and individual sponsors, we were able to help provide Christmas for over 300 children of Georgia National Guard families. The State Youth Program sponsored the Georgia National Guard Christmas Assistance Program for Kim Garrett, State Youth Coordinator, and the Family Assistance Coordinators organized the event. Our Special Thanks to: Mr. Mike Baker and Ms. Karen Cain and the staff of Mozley, Finlayson & Loggins for their Operation Gift Card presentation in the amount of $400.00; Mrs. Lillian Allen ($100.00) and The Rothman Corporation ($500.00) donated a total of $ that was specifically designated for the Christmas program and used to purchase gifts with the help of Mrs. Kim Herndon, Family Assistance Coordinator,; Mr. Steve Little and Ms. Sharon Kreci and the employees of National Restoration Contracting & Consulting, Inc. adopted three families in the Cobb County area; Mr. Marc Wallenstein and Ms. Julie Counterman and the staff of Recordant adopted five families in Cherokee, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett Counties; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Padrick of Hall County, GA adopted a deserving family in Gainesville, GA. and provided gifts for their two children, ages 8 and 10. Mr. Rob Kelly and the Top of Georgia Airstream Park members raised over $ for a family in need in Monroe, Georgia. They invited the family to a luncheon with 80 of their members and a great time was had by all! Mrs. Janice Camp and her Sunday School Class adopted a family in Newton County, GA. Mrs. Camp is the sister-in-law of Barry Caldwell, Incentive Manager for the GA NG. Colonel and Mrs. Steve Joyce provided Christmas gifts for a family in Troup County, GA. The single soldier mom was very appreciative of the gifts for her two sons. The WOODMEN OF THE WORLD organization came through again this year with regional support throughout the State of Georgia. Our sincere thanks and appreciation goes to Mr. William Bailey, Central Georgia; Mr. Curtis Waters, North Georgia and Mr. Keith Reaves, South Georgia. These gentlemen and their supportive lodge members were able to help about 100 children this year and we are all very appreciative of their continued help and support. Kim Garrett has other donors and supporters that she worked with and I am sure they will all be recognized for their contributions by the State Youth Program. This was a mighty undertaking and we all owe our gratitude to Kim and all of the Family Assistance Coordinators for their great work! CHRISTMAS 2007 HRO / DOWD OFFICE AUCTION and luncheon for the employees of the Human Resources Office and Workforce Development raised $ 4, for the Foundation this year! WO1 Larry Dawson a/k/a Dawson s Auction was able to secure items from many different entities to auction to the highest bidder at our December 20, 2007 luncheon. Everybody had a great time for a good cause. The lunch was catered by Manna from Heaven and paid for with funds raised through the Snak Pak account. All of the proceeds from the Auction were made in Memory of LtCol (R) Charles Moulton, who is greatly missed by all. 2
3 NOW IS THE TIME! REMEMBER THE 2007 STATE OF GEORGIA INCOME TAX CHECK-OFF! Georgia taxpayers have another opportunity to make donations to the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation when they file their taxes for the year A simple check-off box on the Georgia income tax return allows taxpayers to make donations that will be automatically deducted from their refund or included in their payment.
