THE CRITICAL NEED Addiction is a chronic disease that requires long-term and comprehensive treatment. Getting expert help in a residential setting is critical to breaking the generational cycle of addiction. Raina, Violet, and Lynette are not alone; there are thousands more who need the services we provide. Consider these facts about DC: DC has one of the highest rates of alcohol and drug abuse in the country Homelessness continues to rise and about half of homeless individuals have substance abuse issues An estimated 20,000 people need treatment, but live without it Fewer than 10 residential treatment centers exist in DC for people with low or no income, and that number is on the decline There are no certified residential substance abuse treatment programs for women and their children
HOW SAMARITAN INNS IS PROVIDING HOPE For more than 28 years, Samaritan Inns has helped homeless people with addictions reclaim their lives by providing treatment, continuing recovery, supportive services, and a home. Samaritan Inns offers a structured three-phase residential treatment program, delivering job and life skills training, that results in independent and productive members of society. We have the knowledge and experience to help end the cycle of addiction in our capital. Over 400 people are served every year through our programs, with one of the highest rates of recovery in the country. In surveys conducted a year after completion of the third phase of our program, more than 90% of clients experience uninterrupted sobriety, are employed full-time, and live independently.
A CAMPAIGN FOR HOPE Samaritan Inns $2.5 million campaign focuses on three initiatives: INITIATIVE I: New Program for Women with Children Renovations to existing main and carriage houses Residence, counseling, and childcare Serve 75 mothers and children per year INITIATIVE II: Expand Programs for Men and Women Renovations to existing transitional living inns Additional staff Serve additional 50 men and 30 women per year HARVARD STREET INN ONTARIO STREET INN FAIRMONT STREET INN MOZART STREET INNS TABITHA HOUSE INITIATIVE III: Strengthen Infrastructure Replace roofs Upgrade heating & cooling systems Upgrade interiors Upgrade IT systems LAZARUS HOUSE ELISHA HOUSE For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11
INITIATIVE I: HOUSING AND TREATMENT FOR WOMEN WITH THEIR CHILDREN Addicted mothers are the greatest underserved population in the District of Columbia. Nearly a thousand families with 2,000 children are homeless in DC Almost all of these families are female-headed About 50% of homeless mothers are drug and/or alcohol dependent Without options for childcare, mothers face two bad choices: either give up their children in order to undergo treatment, or continue to parent while addicted. It is rare to get young women in treatment or keep them in treatment because of concern for the children and the real fear of losing custody. ALINA MCCLERKIN, MANAGER AT THE DC DEPARTMENT OF BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
In response to this critical need, Samaritan Inns will begin a new program that allows mothers to bring their children with them as they undergo treatment. This unprecedented new program is designed to break the cycle of addiction. In addition to traditional services such as addictions counseling and life skills training, mothers will receive trauma therapy and training in cooking, parenting, and family health On-site professional care is provided for young children Older children receive support with school and homework, mental health services, and prevention counseling The cost estimate for renovations, furnishings, establishment of the new program, and initial operations totals $1.25 million. Expected to serve about 75 women and children a year Allows mothers and children to share meals and sleep under the same roof Creates a pathway for self-sufficiency as a family
INITIATIVE II: EXPAND PROGRAMS FOR MEN AND WOMEN It takes long term recovery work including a supportive living environment, separate from old circles and neighborhoods for sobriety to take hold. Samaritan Inns six-month Transitional Program helps create a new life for individuals suffering from addictions a life filled with accountability, responsibility, and loving respect. The need for more transitional living spaces in DC is great, and the services provided to clients in this program are critical to helping people like Jerome and Phyllis.
Samaritan Inns owns two buildings that once renovated and staffed, could serve an additional 50 men and 30 women a year in transition while providing specialized counseling and support services. Clients in the Transitional Program receive addictions counseling, job training and placement, access to healthcare, life skills training, and a social community that supports their transition to a life of abstinence. Approximately $750,000 is needed to renovate and furnish the transitional inns, develop specialized programming, and cover initial staffing and operational costs.
INITIATIVE III: STRENGTHEN INFRASTRUCTURE Clean, safe, and comfortable living environments are critical to those on the path to sobriety. Samaritan Inns prides itself on providing homes that, merely by their beauty and order, lend dignity and hope to those who have lived in conditions that robbed them of both. But our residential properties haven t been renovated in almost 30 years. To maintain a basic standard of living and support operational efficiency, our facilities require: Roof replacements and upgraded interiors Upgraded IT systems Upgraded heating & cooling units An investment of $500,000 would allow Samaritan Inns to make these vital improvements and upgrades.
Please join us in this life-changing opportunity. Together we can stop the generational cycle of addiction, and change the lives of countless men, women, and children in our Nation s capital. O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You healed me. Psalms 30:2
