1 Co-occurring Disorders (COD) Resources in Tennessee - Ken Horvath, MS, LADAC Tennessee Department of Mental Health Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services TPCA Homeless FQHC Grantee Meeting September 21, 2011 Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) FACTS 5.6 million Adults had both serious psychological distress and substance use disorders. Only 8.% received treatment for both mental health and substance abuse. [2006 Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)]. 3% of youth receiving mental health services in the United States have been diagnosed with cooccurring disorders [CMHS, 2001]. Research and clinical findings illustrate that COD is not a rare occurrence but rather is a problem that occurs with consistent frequency. This is truly the rule, not the exceptions. Therefore, it is important that specialized COD programs and on-going community-based support groups be available for people who have COD. Proper diagnosis and treatment are critical to recovery since symptoms of substance use disorders and mental disorders worsen over time. Without help, co-occurring disorders can slow a child s mental and emotional development and lead to problems in school, family upheaval and even suicide. Adolescent admissions with Co-Occurring Disorder were more likely to be female (38%) than other adolescent admission (28%) [Drug and Alcohol Services Information System, The DASIS Report, 2005]. Nearly three-quarters of adolescent admissions with co-occurring disorder were white (2%) compared with half of the other adolescent admissions (51%) [Drug and Alcohol Services Information System, The DASIS Report 2005]. At least 25% of adults experiencing homelessness also have a severe mental illness, and when substance abuse is accounted for, the number swells substantially. These individuals often also suffer with chronic physical health problems. [SAMHSA, 2011]. 1
