According to the EU Commission, some twelve percent of CO 2 emissions in Europe are caused by the cars on our roads. The entire automotive industry is working tirelessly to reduce this figure. Needless to say, Mercedes engineers do everything possible to produce extremely efficient and environmentally compatible premium cars. Always with the proviso that our customers can make an active contribution towards climate protection without having to compromise on the high standards they have come to expect from Mercedes in terms of comfort, safety and effortlessly superior driving pleasure. The new Mercedes models are exceptionally ecofriendly. They boast the same output as their predecessors yet consume less fuel. Plus they cut your fleet s CO 2 emissions and slash running costs. Here at Mercedes-Benz, however, we set our sights even higher. We look at the overall environmental balance from material selection, development and production to use, servicing and, ultimately, recycling the aim being to continuously reduce all our products emissions. We call them TrueBlueSolutions our roadmap for sustainable mobility Innovative technologies for a clean environment. Our cars have always epitomised outstanding quality, safety, design, comfort and superior handling attributes that fit in perfectly alongside our responsibility for the environment. We have been dealing with sustainable mobility for many years. Innovative technologies such as new-generation CGI direct petrol injection for the CLS- and the E-Class, the world s cleanest diesel drive in the E 300 BlueTEC and the NGT gas/petrol hybrid drive system are already proving their immense worth out on the road. In addition to optimised internal-combustion engines with and without BlueHYBRID modules, we will be introducing the first small-series-production vehicle with fuel-cell technology the B-Class F-CELL in 2010.

As a fleet customer, you profit directly from this and are able to align your fleet accordingly. For us, it is not just a question of limiting the muchdiscussed CO 2 emissions. But there are numerous other intelligent vehicle-optimisation solutions that can help to cut both fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. Optimised wheels for savings of up to 0.5 litres per 100 kilometres. The new Mercedes-Benz BlueEFFICIENCY models are fitted with rolling-resistance-optimised tyres, more commonly known as low-resistance tyres. Special tread and a modified rubber compound different to the one used for conventional tyres reduce the rolling resistance on the road surface by a substantial margin. Savings of up

7 7 to half a litre of fuel per 100 kilometres are possible, depending on the car model and tyre size. Longer ratio means lower fuel consumption. Mercedes engineers improve the final drive by optimising the rearaxle ratio, meaning that the drive system requires fewer engine is running under high load and diverts all the power to the drive system. It really comes into its own in city traffic: if the driver stops at traffic lights, for example, the engine switches off. 10 10 Innovations for ecological mobility Mercedes-Benz wants to ensure sustainable mobility. And we have already devised the solution for this. This is our step-by-step roadmap for the development of environmentally friendly premium cars BlueTEC: NO X cut by 80 % in the E 300 BlueTEC CGI: petrol consumption cut by 10 % in the CLS E 350 CGI NGT: CO 2 cut by 20 % in the B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY BlueTEC the world s cleanest diesel. For us, reducing levels of other pollutants is at least as important as cutting CO 2 emissions. BlueTEC our clean diesel technology has been used in passenger cars in the US since 2006 and in Europe since December This intelligent engine technology is extremely effective, reducing the emissions from Mercedes-Benz diesel passenger cars by a considerable margin thanks to a raft of coordinated technical measures. By way of example, the technology has enabled nitrogen oxide emissions to be slashed by up to 80 percent. BlueTEC gives our diesel models the potential to undercut the world s most stringent emission limits, such as the EU6 standard (due to come into force in 2014) or the US standard BIN5.

11 11 CGI petrol direct injection the future of the petrol engine. Direct injection with jet-guided combustion reduces fuel consumption by around ten percent. Based on the current driving situation, precisely the required amount of petrol is injected into the cylinders, where it is burned almost entirely, meaning optimal utilisation Driving with natural gas around 20 percent less CO 2. The E 200 NGT (Natural Gas Technology) is the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car to run on natural gas and has been available since It will be joined by the B-Class B 170 NGT in summer Both are equipped with a bivalent natural gas drive system, meaning that Hybrid drive in the C 300 BlueTEC HYBRID: 31.9 % fuel saving B-Class F-CELL: zero-emission mobility DIESOTTO in the F 700: high efficiency, hardly any NO X without any residue. The CGI (Stratified Charged Gasoline Injection) engine is of particular benefit when it comes to lean-burn operation, in which case it operates with high excess air and, therefore, proves extremely efficient in terms of fuel consumption including, for the first time, at high revs and under high load. This intelligent technology is available for the CLS 350 CGI and the E 350 CGI. they can run on either natural gas or premium unleaded petrol. Buttons on the multifunction steering wheel enable the driver to switch between the two operating modes. CO 2 emissions in natural gas mode are more than 20 percent lower than in petrol mode. The B 170 NGT consumes 4.9 kg of natural gas per 100 km and emits just 135 grams of CO 2 per km, and this fuel is around half the price of petrol.

12 12 BlueTEC HYBRID choice of three variants. Since October 2007, the smart fortwo mhd (micro hybrid drive) has been on the road with the smallest hybrid option: an electric motor with an intelligent start/ stop function, which shuts off the engine when it is idling and starts it again automatically when the brake pedal is released, achieving a fuel saving of 19 percent. level of dynamism and ensures effortlessly superior driving pleasure hallmarks of any Mercedes-Benz. Finally, the third variant is a full hybrid or two-mode system, to be introduced in the ML 450 BlueHYBRID in 2009: an internal-combustion engine and a transmission with two electric motors allow the aforementioned

13 13 functions as well as electric drive. The drive system thus always runs in the optimum fuel consumption range. BlueTEC HYBRID systematic synthesis. What could be more obvious than combining the world s cleanest diesel with hybrid technology? The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is is generated in the fuel cell to produce electric drive. This clean and economical system, first used in the F 700 research vehicle, combines the advantages of diesel and petrol engines. Apart from when starting or running under full load, the petrol engine works like a conventional diesel engine and consumes just 5.3 l of premium unleaded petrol per 100 km 3 l fewer than equivalent saloons in this class.

14 14 Ecology from start to finish Mercedes-Benz is committed to ensuring sustainable mobility. A raft of ecological measures improves the environmental performance of our vehicles throughout their entire lifecycle Environmental compatibility from start to finish. The process of creating your Mercedes- Benz begins with the selection of suitable natural resources and materials. It ends with a form of design and production which allows recycling and reuse. Our production plants all over the world pay attention to preventing air pollution and protecting the climate. They use low-carbon fuels, combined heat & power and heat regeneration. Plus measures are implemented to save energy and increase the efficiency of machinery. Our aim is to preserve resources and prevent emissions, both when our products are manufactured and when they are used on the road. Back to nature. The percentage of renewable raw materials used in our vehicles is on the increase. For the new C-Class, by way of example, we produced 27 components using natural materials, including coconut, wood, flax and cotton fibres in combination with various polymer materials. Compared to the outgoing model, the new C-Class also incorporates a higher proportion of reused plastics. Some 32 components, with a combined weight of just over 40 kilograms, are made partially from high-quality recycled plastics an increase of around 34 percent. Fuel for the future. Petrol and diesel will continue to play a key role in the coming years, so their performance needs to be enhanced which means greater efficiency, fewer emissions and less CO 2. There are already fossil alternatives in use today, such as natural gas, which contains less carbon than petrol or diesel, improves emission quality and cuts running costs. Biogenic fuels are also being used on the road towards sustainable mobility. The vast majority of all petrol engines for Mercedes-Benz and smart cars can run on biogenic fuel containing up to 10 percent ethanol, in which case CO 2 emissions can be cut by up to 15 grams per kilometre.
