3 1. Who are Castle Cavendish? We are a local regeneration charity based in the heart of Radford in central Nottingham. We work in partnership with local authorities, central government and regional & national funders to improve the quality of life for the people of Nottingham and specifically those residents and communities in The Arboretum, Hyson Green, Radford, Lenton and Dunkirk areas of the city (otherwise known as Area 4 by Nottingham City Council) In 2013 Nottingham City Council chose Castle Cavendish to be its Area Lead Organisation for the voluntary & community sector organisations working with Children & Young people within Area 4. The council awarded this status alongside a grant to allow Castle Cavendish to work with local delivery partners to coordinate and manage a range of diversionary activities and targeted provision across the entire area for children & young people aged 8-17 years old. For 2014/2015 the Council has awarded Castle Cavendish almost 118,000 to fund this work. In addition, Castle Cavendish has also invested a substantial amount of its own funds to supplement the City Council s Grant, realising a combined total of over 150,000 of grant investment and providing even greater opportunities to the communities within the area. We are able to do this because although we are a charity we also have a commercial trading arm that owns and manages a portfolio of 1.5m worth of commercial properties in Nottingham. Ranging from managed office spaces and retail shops to light-industrial units, the net income generated from the letting of these properties is then reinvested back into the charity which uses the funds to support a range of good causes and local initiatives. 2. The Step Into Work Project Castle Cavendish s Step Into Work initiative is led by their Community Employability Team and is aimed at year old unemployed people within the area. Whilst the majority of funding comes from the Cabinet Office, Castle Cavendish has once again demonstrated its commitment to the cause by investing a significant amount of its own funds into the project. The aim of the project is to: Remove barriers faced by young people when looking for work Reduce the stresses associated with being unemployed Improve the work-readiness and employability of local young people Increase the number of employment opportunities available to local young people Operating an open-referral policy allowing year olds to simply walk in off the street, we also welcome agency referrals from other organisations and are willing to work in partnership with them to offer wrap-around support to young people with complex needs which cannot be met by one service alone. In addition, we signpost and refer young people to our partners in the voluntary and community sector who offer other specialist services for young people.
4 What we can offer young people: A community-based approach for young people who live in the area that doesn t require travelling into the city-centre to seek employment support from more formal sources. Our Employability Team is mobile and works out of various community venues across the area to maximise accessibility and where appropriate, home visits can also be conducted. A translator can also be provided where necessary. An effective engagement style that encourages active participation in the project by local young people. Our Employability Team members are based within the communities they serve and have excellent links with other community groups, voluntary organisations and other third-sector organisations working in the area. A tailor-made support package based on each individual client s needs. Whether they need qualifications, work experience, motivation, confidence-building or simply somewhere to look for jobs online, we can help. Our 12-week pre-employment training program is different for every referral as each one is designed specifically to meet their individual requirements and ensure they re getting exactly the support they need. Real-world Work experience that could lead to a permanent job. Castle Cavendish works closely with a range of employers across various sectors to ascertain employability benchmarks for entry-level positions within their area of business. Each referral is offered a support package that can include up to 10 weeks of training in a specific work-sector followed by a 2 week Work Taster with one of these employers. Should the work taster lead to an offer of employment, additional funding is in place to cover 50% of the young person s wages for their first year in employment. Ongoing mentoring and support beyond the end of the 12 weeks. Our support doesn t end once the young person has secured a job, training course or apprenticeship. We work with the young person for up to 6 months to make sure that not only can they get a job but also so that they can stabilise their lives and stay in work long-term. Unfortunately, there are limitations to the support we can provide. If a referral does not meet or exceeds our criteria we will notify the referrer of the reasons why and suggest other agencies that may offer more appropriate support. 3. Job Clubs & Digital Inclusion Although the Step Into Work program is for young adults aged years old, anyone of any age who needs employment support can join one of the 5 Job Clubs we provide (1 in Hyson Green, 2 in Radford, 1 in Lenton and 1 in Dunkirk). Particular emphasis is placed on providing members with access to computers (and training to use them) to enable a more effective and up-to-date means of looking for work, particularly amongst jobseekers in the over-50 age bracket where computer-literacy is lowest. To find out the days/times of our Job Clubs, get more information on Step Into Work or to find out about our other community initiatives, get in touch with the team on or info@castlecavendish.org.uk
