2 Vocational Rehabilitation Service Targets people with complex disabilities as a result of brain injury. Flexible, specialist support. Participants are those who are furthest away from the labour market. A range of training and support interventions delivered in partnership with rehabilitation services that promote social inclusion & employability skills. This Programme is part financed by the European Social Fund and the Department for Employment and Learning.

10 Case study Sustained Traumatic Head Injury aged 20 as a result of assault Traumatic injury caused a bleed in the left parietal area of the brain Right sided Hemianopia loss of vision in either the right or left sides of both eyes Aphasia Language disorder usually affecting both the understanding and production of spoken and written language
11 Medical intervention 6 weeks as in patient in Neurosurgical Unit At Royal Victoria Hospital (Coma for 2 weeks) 10 weeks spent as in patient in Regional Acquired Brain Injury Unit Transferred to local Acquired Brain Injury Team for follow up Medical intervention / Community Rehabilitation: Occupational Therapy Physiotherapy Speech therapy Psychology
12 Vocational Profiling Referred to Cedar 24 th June 2010 by the Community Brain Injury Team for Vocational Rehabilitation Explored any Concerns / Expectations Completed Rickter Scale Assessment & Action Planning Tool Look at interests informs planning process & helps assess level of ability
13 Action Planning Action Plan agreed with client / Community Brain Injury Team: Improve my Literacy and reading skills To be able to use home computer more effectively To build up self esteem and confidence To try out work opportunities to help decide on a career Support to manage memory problems
14 Programme Activity Regular 1 1 sessions with Cedar project staff Revision from speech therapy sessions & Essential skills classes Reinforcing use of external memory strategies e.g. mobile phone/diary for managing appointments Continued interaction with client in order to improve communication skills Encourage Social Interaction through contact with other Service Users

Look at skills & interests pre/post injury what are the viable options: Tiling, similar to plastering but less risk involved Working in a Veterinary practice/surgery/hospital Working in a Grooming Parlour Working with Guide Dogs Association Working as a mentor for visually impaired people
