2 The British Academy of Sound Therapy and 21st Century Wholing At BAST, we teach a range of methodologies to help improve health and wellbeing in several ways: It is now widely accepted that most illness is stress related. Therefore treatment methodologies that promote relaxation and help reduce stress can be a very effective way to prevent and treat illness. Our research has shown that the BAST method of sound therapy is very effective at reducing stress (please see point 4). As holistic health practitioners and therapists we use the Vedic model of Chakras (energy centres) and Nadis (energy channels) to assess where there may be an excess or lack of energy flow in the system. An imbalance of energy flow may relate to symptoms that a client may be experiencing which can be explored during treatment. This model is rooted in thousands of years of teachings and knowledge. We also assess the overall energy state of the client based on the findings from their case study, body language and how they communicate, etc. The trained therapist or practitioner is then able to create a sonic prescription for the client. The impact of this intervention is then monitored and assessed during and post treatment. Sound therapy is also extremely therapeutic with regard to group and community work. From improvisation and performance to sound-baths, working with identity, meaning and narrative - all can be explored through therapeutic sound work, sometimes resulting in life-changing breakthroughs. Our research has consistently shown positive benefits with regard to community sound work. (3) Therapeutic sound affects neurology and physiology. Research undertaken at BAST (and also independently) has shown that our methodology is 16% more relaxing than conventional relaxation music (1), 6% more relaxing than other treatments such as massage (1), and, on average 64% more relaxing than other general relaxation methods (2). Relaxation reduces blood pressure, heart rate and respiration, therefore it is likely that it also changes neuro-chemistry, lowering the stress hormone, Cortisol, and increasing the amount of NK (natural killer cells) and Immunoglobulin A in the system, helping to improve immunity. 5 With the developing sciences of psychoneuroimmunology and psychobiology we are uncovering more about the interaction between the body and mind, making the combination of sound and reflective techniques perfect for 21st century mainstream and holistic healthcare. All of the BAST methodologies are person centred. This means that we work in a non-directive way to facilitate a wholing process. The main way of working is through reflective practice which enables a client to become more aware of their process as the sound interacts with their system. This interaction can be mental, emotional, physical or spiritual, making sound therapy perfect for imbalances on any level of being. This process is supported by the practitioner, therapist or community sound-worker. It is with the above in mind that BAST have developed a comprehensive portfolio of courses and training to meet the needs of anyone wanting to work with therapeutic sound in a professional capacity. 1. The five day intensive module is followed by 6 hours of webinar sessions, where coursework and theory will be delivered online from the comfort of your home. Lyz Cooper MA.Ed, FICNM Lyz (pictured above) has been working in education for over 20 years, within the holistic health for 30 years and with sound for 18 years. Lyz is a published author who has researched and developed effective techniques for helping to improve health and wellbeing using sound. Lyz s passion and dedication has resulted in her being awarded a Fellowship of the Institute of Complementary and Natural Medicine for her contribution to sound therapy worldwide. In 2011 Lyz was approached by Radox and asked to collaborate with ambient music trio Marconi Union. Her brief was to create a piece of relaxing music for the launch of Radox Spa. Lyz contributed her knowledge to the track, advising Marconi Union where to put the sonic vitamins, as she calls them. Mindlab, based at Sussex University, tested the track against other music and were so impressed with the results, the track was called The Most Relaxing Track Ever. The impact of this track resulted in Lyz giving almost 50 media interviews worldwide and winning Time Magazines Top 50 best inventions of Lyz co-founded the Sound Therapy Association, an organisation which aims to support all sound therapists and organisations, setting standards and furthering the field. Lyz is currently studying an MSc in Applied Music Psychology at Roehampton University. 5 Level 2 Practitioner Level Diploma in Sound TherapyPL.Dip.ST (BAST) 13th - 17th September, Adelaide the original bast method This method of sound therapy was the first professionally recognised training course in the UK and was launched by Lyz Cooper in It comprises Himalayan singing bowls, Passive Voice Therapy (chakra vowel toning and overtoning), Crystal singing bowls, therapeutic percussion and grounding. An assessment of the energy system is made by scanning before and after treatment. This method is based on the reduction of harmonics within the treatment to encourage expansion of the energy system and a deep state of relaxation. featured in this course Diagnosis and Enquiry Scanning the energy system with sound, reflective techniques for deeper enquiry, chakra correlations. Reflective Practice Techniques Reflection is key to transformation. By enabling a client to reflect on their personal circumstances/symptoms etc, changes can be made on all levels of being. The five day module concentrates on practical elements for working in a setting, and is the perfect addition to the Therapeutic Sound in the Community Course, giving your business stability and versatility. This model enables you to treat clients attending groups who wish to drill deeper into their process in a capacity, as well as giving your clients the option to top up by attending your weekly/monthly group sessions. This makes the Level 1 and 2 package a very stable business model. This course will be held at Old Noarlunga Hall, just south of Adelaide. The course is non residential. Training days will be from 10-5 most days with some evening sessions (details will be provided on request). Students will be required to complete case studies and coursework and a practical and theoretical assessment will be completed. Following the module there will be 4 monthly 1 hour webinars to support you with your case studies. The BAST Method of Sound Therapy Himalayan bowls and crystal bowls in a 1-2- treatment setting. 6 Course Fees and Location LEVEL 1 Diploma in Group Sound Therapy Course Location Cape Byron is Australia s most easterly point, located on the north coast of New South Wales (see map of Australia below). With its numerous beaches, unspoilt hinterland, and relaxed lifestyle, Byron Bay is a popular tourist destination.
