2 Training in music therapy The Department of Music launched its MMus (Music Therapy) programme in February This is the first music therapy training course in South Africa to be approved by the Health Professionals Council of South Africa. The Music Therapy Training Programme was co-founded by Prof Mercedes Pavlicevic and Mrs Kobie Swart (nee Temmingh). Prof Pavlicevic is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh and the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre in London. Apart from her continued involvement in the Music Therapy Training Programme, she is also Co- Director of Research at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Centre. Mrs Kobie Swart is a graduate of Potchefstroom University and the Southern Methodist University, Dallas, USA, and continues her involvement as lecturer in the Music Therapy Training programme. Mrs Carol Lotter and Mrs Andeline Dos Santos, both graduates of the University of Pretoria co-direct the Music Therapy training programme. Other tutors on the programme include Adri van Heerden, Jannien van Aardt Botes and Karen de Kock. Professional registration On successfully completion of the MMus (Music Therapy) training, graduates register with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA). This licenses them to practice as music therapists in South Africa and requires them to participate in the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme for the Arts Therapies as set out by the HPCSA. Registration with the HPCSA is mandatory for anyone in South Africa calling themselves a music therapist, or calling what they do music therapy. On completing the training, graduates are invited to become members of the South African Network for Arts Therapies Organizations (SANATO) which is involved in professional development in the Arts Therapies, and which profiles the Arts Therapies professions for the general public. PLEASE NOTE: Since 2010, The MMus (Music Therapy) program has been offered in modular format. This is in order to accommodate students who wish to do the course, but cannot relocate to Pretoria from various parts of South Africa. This enables students to complete their clinical internship, course work and dissertation from their home base. Three compulsory intensive 9 day block sessions are held each year for the two year period. Students are also required to travel to the University for examinations at the conclusion of each year of study. The modular programme does NOT equate to parttime study. It is a two year FULL-TIME academic program. IT IS, THEREFORE, NOT POSSIBLE TO DO THIS COURSE WHILST HOLDING DOWN A JOB.

3 Entry requirements Prospective M.Mus (Music Therapy) students need to have completed a four-year bachelor s degree in music or in a related field (e.g. psychology, speech therapy, occupational therapy, social work or education) and need to demonstrate strong musical skills. Applicants need to demonstrate proficiency on a keyboard instrument, guitar playing and in the use of the voice. Personal experience of counselling and psychotherapy is also recommended. In addition, psychology to third year level is required. Although this requirement may be completed during the course, it is strongly recommended that students have already obtained psychology III before applying. This is due to the workload of the course, especially during the second year of training. 1) Undergraduate Students Prospective candidates who are currently registered for Bachelor's degrees in music or in allied fields at South African Universities are advised to include Psychology modules and Ethnomusicology I and II as part of their degree programme. In addition, candidates registered for non-music degrees need to show a sound theoretical and practical base in music. Undergraduate students at the University of Pretoria should also enrol for the Music Therapy subject currently on offer at 4th year BMus level. If you currently hold a three-year degree, you may wish to consider applying for the BMus (Hons) Music Communication course. This will qualify you for application to the MMus (Music Therapy) programme. Further information regarding this course can be obtained from the Music Therapy Unit (contact details are listed below). 2) Mature applicants Mature applicants with life / teaching / other professional experience are especially encouraged to apply. Where possible, flexibility regarding academic requirements is \ exercised, subject to entrance examinations as directed by Faculty requirements, especially where professional and life experience are deemed to substitute academic qualifications.

4 Curriculum Research: MUZ 885 Mini-dissertation [120 credits] Core modules: MUZ880 Music therapy theory (1) MUZ 881 Clinical studies (1) MUZ 882 Music therapy theory (2) MUZ 883 Clinical studies (2) The training includes 1,000 hours of supervised clinical internships at designated placements in various medical, psychiatric, neurological, developmental and community settings. Selection procedure The selection procedure for the MMus (Music Therapy) comprises two stages: Stage 1: pre-screening of Applicants through a written application to be submitted by the end of July in the year prior to the commencement of the next programme. Acceptance of the written applications leads to Stage 2. Stage 2: Selection of applicants for audition / interview in August / September of the year prior to the commencement of the next programme.

5 Written application Please note that there are no application Forms. You are required to compile a dossier with the information requested below, for Stage 1, of the selection procedure. 1. Qualifications, name of institution, date of graduation, plus official copy of transcript from institution with courses completed and grades earned. 5. Names and contact information of 2 referees. 6. Working and professional experience. List institutions and duration starting with most recent experience. 7. Financial resources to undertake the course. 8. Details of criminal records. 9. Personal Information: to include how you deal with circumstances of extreme stress (please give an example); family history of mental health problems - whether diagnosed or not, whether treated or not; any other personal information you think relevant 10. A short motivation on why you are interested in training as a music therapist. 11. A short explanation of your idea of what music therapy entails. ALL APPLICATIONS ARE TREATED AS CONFIDENTIAL. Auditions take place at the Music Therapy Unit, Music Department, University of Pretoria. In some instances a second interview may be necessary, which should be taken into account when travelling from another part of the country. Audition-interviews focus on the following: 1. Assessing musical abilities: level of musicianship on key boards and guitar, aural skills (sight-singing, intervals), use of voice (sight-singing, vocal improvisation) and a free improvisation on a suggested theme. In addition, basic keyboard skills and ability to improvise with / accompany another person on at least one instrument will be assessed. 2. Exploring the candidate's personal issues and insights in terms of working with handicapped and disordered persons, and assessing psychological and emotional stamina for undertaking training course. 3. General life experience and maturity. Here, some experience of personal therapy is highly recommended; and older applicants are also encouraged to apply. ED OR FAXED APPLICATIONS ARE NOT CONSIDERED.

6 Fees and contact information FEES: Course fees vary from year to year, and a supplementary levy is implemented over and above the MMus registration fees for extra music therapy costs. Consult client services for more information. In addition, enrolled students need to own a guitar and need to equip themselves with a good quality video and audio recording equipment or, and a good microphone, as well as hand percussion instruments within the first 6 months of training. Advice is given during the first six months of the programme as to what equipment to purchase. Students also need to have computing skills and also need to have access to the internet and during their enrolment.
