1 Curriculum Overview Art and Design The Art Department at Wickersley boasts an array of high quality work from students at all Key Stages. Our aim is to prepare students for success from the time when they enter Y7 right through to Y13. As such our curriculum is both supportive and challenging while giving students every opportunity to develop creatively and independently. We teach a wide variety of skills and techniques in both 2D and 3D media. Students work from all key stages is permanently on display throughout the department in classrooms, corridors and in the gallery where we display work to motivate and enthuse students and help them aspire to the next level. As such, students are always aware of their own development in relation to assessment and final outcomes. All students are taught Art once a week in Y7, and they opt to study the subject in 8 and 9, with one lesson a week. As an option subject at GCSE and A Level, students follow the Fine Art syllabus from AQA. Y10 and 11 students have 2 lessons a week while Y12 and Y13 students have 4. We run Art clubs after school for KS3 in addition to supportive workshop sessions after school for all KS4 and 5 students. The atmosphere in the department is, purposeful, busy, proactive and positive with students who enjoy their studies and teachers who are well motivated and keen to see students develop into independent and accomplished. Y7 The Year 7 Art schemes of work, focus on introducing Y7 to a wide range of materials and creative making techniques while developing the fundamental 1

2 Fine Art skills needed for high quality results. Students explore Art History while developing work in response to such as Picasso, Cezanne, Hundertwasser, Kandinsky, Paolozzi, Andrea Joseph, the cultural meanings linked to Aboriginal Art. 4 Y8 The Year 8 Art schemes of work, focus on developing the skills learnt in Y7. Students building on their knowledge and understanding to refine their skills and produce exciting but sophisticated outcomes. Students continue to explore Art History while developing work in response to such as African and Tribal Art., James Rosenquist American Pop Art. Contemporary ceramic artists such as James Rosenquist American Pop Art. Mimi Matelot Ceramics based on Sea Life. Illustrators such as Quentin Blake and Lauren Child. 6 Y9 Students follow schemes of work that closely reflect the work completed for our Fine Art GCSE course. This allows them to develop their skills using a variety of media while also responding to artists research. The projects include, Natural forms, Urban Environments, Expressive Portraiture and a Sweet Tooth project. Students develop drawings and paintings using different techniques and work in styles that reflect contemporary as well as historical methods. This develops their creativity and expression while refining their technical skill.
