2 Georgia O Keeffe Georgia O Keeffe is one of the most significant and intriguing artists of the twentieth century, known internationally for her boldly innovative art. Her distinct flowers, dramatic cityscapes, glowing landscapes, and images of bones against the stark desert sky are iconic and original contributions to American Modernism a style of art that departed significantly from the traditions of the past. In a career spanning more than sixty years, she produced more than a thousand artworks.

3 About the Artist Born on November 15, 1887, the second of seven children, Georgia Totto O Keeffe grew up on a farm near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. As a child she received art lessons at home. Her abilities were recognized and encouraged by teachers throughout her school years. By the time she graduated from high school in 1905, O Keeffe had determined to make her way as an artist. Georgia O Keeffe worked as an artist up until a few years before she passed, at the age of 98, on March 6,

5 Media What media did O Keeffe use? Georgia considered herself a painter although she worked in various media. She used oil paints, pastels, charcoal and other media to complete her astounding art pieces. She painted what she saw and painted outdoors drawing inspiration from nature.

6 Abstract Art Georgia O Keeffe, From the Lake, 1924 Between 1915 and 1918, when O Keeffe was either teaching or taking art classes, she explored abstraction as a means of self-expression. Her keen interest in abstraction as an expressive device distinguishes her work from the representational art of most of her American contemporaries, and establishes O Keeffe as among the most innovative American artists of the period.

13 Mini-Activity Use your knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design to analyze the shell artwork on the right by O Keeffe. In the small space provided mimic the colors, shape and blending style used by Georgia to complete the shell. When finished write your name on your sheet and turn it in at the end of the period.

14 Georgia O Keeffe Assignment Choose an artwork from the teacher selected pieces. Use the pre-made grids to section off your composition. Make sure to line up your grid with the outer edges of at least two sides so you can easily line it up later. You will not be keeping your grid sheets, they are returned each day at the end of the period. Everyone must use a grid. Using a 12 x 18 sheet of paper, draw 3 marks all the way around your paper. The artwork will bleed off of the paper. The grid example will measure 1 and you will enlarge the your image size from a 4 x6 to a 12 x18.
