Throughout your course a Personal Tutor will support you in your academic, personal and professional development. Staff operate an open door policy which keeps the atmosphere between students and staff relaxed and friendly. There is a strong emphasis on developing transferable skills including presentation, IT and personal organisation, all of which will be important in your future working life. Learning, teaching and assessment Modules are delivered using a combination of lecture-based and laboratory-based teaching, allowing you to learn biomedical sciences in a practical context. Classes are appropriately sized to maximise practical experience and interaction with staff. A wide range of assessment methods are utilised, including examinations, assignments, laboratory work and presentations. Accreditation and recognition Many of our courses have been given the seal of approval by professional bodies. Our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), a status that has been renewed in 2011 confirming the quality and currency of the education it provides. Applied Sciences Extended Degree For students who don t posses the full entry requirements for our BSc programmes the School of Life Sciences offers a one year Extended Degree designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to allow progression (upon successful completion) onto one of our three or four year full-time degrees outlined in this brochure. To be considered for the programme you ll need five GCSEs grade C or above, including English and Maths and a minimum of 120 UCAS points. Applications are made through UCAS (course code Y002). Career prospects Biomedical sciences graduates enter a variety of exciting careers including hospital and veterinary pathology service, pharmaceutical industry, bioscience research, medicine or dentistry (after acceptance in medical school and further training), healthcare and nutrition. 3

4 Biomedical ScienceS BSc (Hons) UCAS code: B940 BSc/B10M Length: Three years full-time (four years sandwich) Five years part-time (with work-based learning attendance one day per week) Six years part-time (attendance one day per week) The degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and provides the education required to become a Registered Biomedical Scientist working in the National Health Service (NHS). Alternatively, it could lead to a career in bioscience research, teaching or industry. The course provides a broad-based education in all aspects of biomedical science, including biochemistry, genetics, haematology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, pathology, physiology, toxicology and transfusion science. There is a strong emphasis on laboratory work, transferable skills, independent learning, group work and communication skills. In the final year you will focus on the current aspects of biomedical sciences, with an emphasis on the investigation of disease at a molecular level and the role of biomedical research in furthering knowledge of the nature and treatment of disease. The final year project will give you the opportunity to carry out an extended period of research activity and independent learning in an area of biomedical sciences of your choice. Teaching staff in the subject area comprise those who have previous experience as Biomedical Scientists in the NHS, post doctoral researchers and a number of part-time lecturers who are current practitioners working in local hospitals. Many staff engage in biomedical research and thus, current knowledge and skills are constantly updated and enhance our teaching and course material. The first year is designed to provide you with a foundation in the core scientific subjects underpinning biomedical sciences alongside an introduction to the disciplines of the biomedical laboratory. In the second year you ll cover the application of these subjects to provide an understanding of aspects of the disease process. The third year offers an optional work placement, whereby you may wish to apply for a work placement in an external laboratory and gain valuable work experience. 4 SCHOOL OF LIFE SCIENCES

6 Human Biosciences BSc (Hons) UCAS code: B150 BSc/HB Length: Three years full-time Human Biosciences is the scientific study of the causes, diagnosis and treatment of human disease, representing one of the most important areas of applied life sciences. This degree has been designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of the biology of the human body and the basis of disease, alongside practical and transferable skills that will enhance your employability in bioscience-related areas such as the pharmaceutical industry, biomedical research and healthcare science. A distinctive element is offered by the recent incorporation of neuroscience modules. The final year focuses on the current aspects of biosciences with an emphasis on the investigation of disease at the molecular level and the role of biomedical research in furthering knowledge of the nature and treatment of disease. The final year project and Scientific Literature Review will give you the opportunity to carry out an extended period of research activity and independent learning in an area of Human Biosciences of your choice. A key feature is the integration of theory together with practical experience across the taught programme, with the provision of opportunities for the development of practical and professional skills required in the workplace. The first year provides you with a foundation in the core scientific subjects underpinning Human Biosciences alongside an introduction to the laboratory disciplines of the biomedical laboratory. In the second year you ll cover the application of these subjects to provide an understanding of the aspects of the disease process. 8 Shakera Rahman BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences What appealed to you about Northumbria University? Northumbria University has a reputation for offering the highest class of education as well as a high standard of student life in general. People I knew who already studied at Northumbria recommended the University as it offered great teaching and student help. Why did you choose this course? I ve always been very interested in sciences as I find it very interesting to understand how life around us works. Sciences are not the easiest subject to grasp but with a little effort you find yourself suddenly able to understand and explain something which makes you feel as if you ve gained so much more. I singled out Biomedical Studies because it involved understanding how human life functions and combined my interest in biology with my interest in the practical side of chemistry. Can you give an example of a piece of work you ve been involved with? Recently I took part in an assessed practical for Cell Biology. The practical involved Gram staining various bacteria to better understand bacterial cell structure. Using various procedures and chemicals, the samples either stained purple or red depending on the chemistry of their cell membrane. Using a microscope I was able to view these samples and take down notes on what I saw. The next part of the practical involves answering various multiple choice questions online about the Gram staining process. The actual process of Gram staining was completely new to me, but with the information in the hand-out, the demonstration from the lecturer, and the on hand help from both the lecturer and the technician I came out feeling very confident about Gram staining. What would you like to do when you graduate? When I began the course I wanted to go into some form of work in biomedical labs. Since starting the course I have learned much more about the different types of biomedical labs in hospitals and at the moment I would like to work in a histology lab. What three words would you use to describe your time at Northumbria? Fun, hectic, brilliant. People I knew who already studied at Northumbria recommended the University as it offered great teaching and student help. 8 SCHOOL OF LIFE SCIENCES

9 Daniel Jones BSc (Hons) Human Biosciences What appealed to you about Northumbria University? Northumbria University has a solid reputation in practical aspects of science and has great links in the industry, plus Newcastle is such a vibrant and exciting city. Why did you choose this course? Human Biosciences covers a broad range of scientific areas, which means you get a thorough grounding in many disciplines. This is really attractive if like me, you haven t quite chosen what career path in science you re going to take. What do you like most about the course? I like the range of subjects, between the various lectures and the interactive lab work it really keeps things interesting. How do you get on with your tutors? My tutors are all really supportive and have their own specific research areas, meaning you re really getting advice from leaders in the field. What would you like to do when you graduate? After spending so much time in the labs and really enjoying it, I d like to take that further as a career and I think a job as a research assistant would be the best step. Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course, or for university in general? As for the university experience it s best to go into it with an open mind and really take every opportunity to immerse yourself. You re only a student once and it really is the time of your life! What three words would you use to describe your time at Northumbria? Northumbria University has great links in the industry, plus Newcastle is such a vibrant and exciting city. Fun, challenging, amazing. 9
